Founders Hall has a lovely building and offers classes, speakers and social activities, but what it really provides is connections. Members have opportunities to connect with each other, with interesting subjects, with stimulating hobbies, with important places, and with current technology. In the same way that a puzzle is incomplete if a piece is missing, Founders Hall would be incomplete without you, our donors. Because of you, Founders Hall is able to provide these invaluable connections and have a positive effect on the lives of 3,700 people.

“ Eventually everything connects — people, ideas, objects.

The quality of the connections is the key to quality per se.” ~Charles Eames

GRATITUDE

In 2019 you gave Founders Hall many gifts – big and small – to help us achieve our mission of bringing seniors together and forging connections in a warm, fun and stimulating environment. For that I am deeply grateful.

Your generosity, and that of other donors like you, is essential to the mission of Founders Hall. As I write this in March, 2020, Ridgefield is social distancing during the pandemic and it is abun-dantly clear how vital our mission is to the well-being of our members. We are quickly putting new programs into place to maintain the connections our members need so much right now.

Our members are a diverse and dynamic body. We have a 53-year age difference between our youngest and oldest members. Some of our members are still working and will retire soon, while many are already retired. Some have lived in this area for years while others are recent transplants. Founders Hall continues to evolve to meet the changing needs and interests of this vibrant group, and to help them connect with each other.

Many of our members also volunteer at Founders Hall in a variety of capacities, including as seminar presenters. Our seminar series is open to the public, which is one way Founders Hall connects with the Ridgefield community. We are honored to partner with a variety of local organizations to continually strengthen our beloved town.

We are now confronting unprecedented challenges. But because of the generosity of donors who give monthly and annually, those who plan to give through their wills, and those who have invested in Founders Hall’s perpetuity by establishing our new endowment, our past, present and future are now connected endlessly.

With much gratitude

Grace E. Weber Executive Director

Thanks to you, nearly 800 participants were able to pursue their health and wellness

goals in 2019. From Aquacize to Zumba, Founders Hall members had an abundance of fitness options. Some danced their way to fitness in tap, ballroom, and aerobics classes. Others found their inner calm and perfect pose in yoga, while still more enhanced their strength and balance in eponymous classes. And the team sports players met regularly to participate in pickleball and basketball.

With your donations, our annual Health & Fitness Day provided health screenings, cutting edge health information and new fitness trends to our members. The annual sign up day for fitness classes has grown into a Founders Hall holiday of sorts. Because of your ongoing generosity in 2019, we were able to add a new class section of Tai Chi, the popular mind-body practice, and the Fitness Program book became its own separate mailing.

You Strengthened the Mind-Body-Spirit Connection

“ I started taking the Seated Strength & Conditioning class right after

I moved to Ridgefield and had a very bad health scare. This class

was perfect for me. I improved a great deal physically and I made

some new friends. Barb {the instructor} is a delight.” ~ Marion Milrod

Thanks to your generous gifts, over 1,200 participants had opportunities to explore

and express their ideas in a plethora of ways — music lessons and performance, writing, drawing, painting, woodworking, weaving, quilting and more. With your support, caring instructors nurtured and cultivated the creativity within each student, inspiring them to connect with others by expressing themselves artistically. Without you, Founders Hall wouldn’t have the well-equipped rooms and equipment necessary for these artists to practice and flourish.

Because of you, Founders Hall members – in classes and drop-in groups — were able to learn about their chosen craft and practice it with other like-minded members. Working together and alongside each other, they sewed quilts, carved wood, knitted sweaters, painted in oil, grew vege-tables, learned how to draw with dots, designed monograms, and more. Your donations were the key to these 118 programs, and the connections they fostered, and for that we are very grateful.

You Connected Ideas to Action Thereby Producing Works of Art

“ I had a career in commercial art and teaching, and I wanted to

return to the fine art I had studied in college art school. At Founders

Hall I take Colored Pencil Drawing and Oil Painting classes. I enjoy

both quite a bit. I appreciate being able to reconnect with an

interest I didn’t have time to pursue while working.” ~ David Beebe

Due to your generosity, Founders Hall members were able to deepen their personal

connections with music appreciation, film, literature, history, current events, and world languages. They wrangled with global issues, searched for the American soul, and connected Goethe’s Faust with famous composers, just to name a few. Using the technology generously provided by you, they connected with both their ancestors and the people around them today. By funding 15 seminars, you helped our members soak up topics such as Walt Whitman, the transit of Mercury, and Horticulture as Therapy.

Because of your generous support, we were able to provide more opportunities for members to delve into engaging material in 2019. We expanded the Academic Program by adding seven new classes to the course catalog in categories of international studies, short stories, poetry, geography, self-care, current events, and technology. We also added a new section in the ever-popular Film class.

You Connected Lifelong Students with Generations of Thinkers and Creators

“ My mother was born in Bohemia. That area has always been a

mystery to me, so imagine my delight when Michael Lankester

offered a class on the music of that region, including The Moldau

by Bedrich Smetana. He threw in a bit of history and background,

and showed us beautiful photos of the area. I felt like I finally

connected with my roots and family history.” ~ Antoinette Brennan

Companionship and togetherness is the essence of Founders Hall, and you provide that through your generous gifts. In 2019 our members enjoyed each other’s company during a wide range of programs, trips, parties and performances. Together they celebrated holidays and watched movies. They played and competed in games such as chess and canasta, mah jongg and Mexican train dominoes, billiards and bocce. Meanwhile, friendships blossomed and personal connections were strengthened.

Donations such as yours sent Founders Hall members on trips to places such as the Whitney Museum, the Connecticut Flower and Garden Show, and the Culinary Institute. They attended performances of Twelfth Night, Newsies, Les Miserables and others. Your support made our teas and tastings possible; these social events are centered around a theme, such as “The French Quarter.” And our “Cooking with the Staff” series is a perennially popular way to relax and socialize. None of this would happen without you. Thank you.

You Brought People Together to Bond Over Shared Interests

“ One of the recent trips was a Connecticut River cruise to see

bald eagles. It was phenomenal. We saw three bald eagle couples

– they were beautiful, and I learned so much about them.

I felt reconnected to nature and the environment.” ~ Joel Anyan

Elaine Couri served as a member of the Founders Hall Board of Directors since its

inception in 2002. In fact, without Elaine, Founders Hall might not exist. She imagined the concept of a senior center offering what would be most appreciated by the seniors in Ridgefield. Funded by private philanthropy, and persuading others to join with her, she nurtured Founders Hall into the wonderful organization we know today.

Many generous donors like you answered Elaine’s call and united with her, her husband John Couri, and Liz and Steven Goldstone, to provide the support that 3,700 seniors depend on for lifelong learning, wellness and community. Her mission and vision fulfilled, Elaine tendered her resignation from the board in September 2019, which her fellow directors accepted with deep gratitude and warm best wishes.

And now, due to the tremendous generosity of an anonymous donor, an endowment has been established that will ensure that Founders Hall will be here for future generations. The past, present and future of Founders Hall are now connected in perpetuity.

CAROLE LONG | Member Since 2012A resident of Cross River, NY, Carole Long was on the non-resident waiting list for three years before

getting the call that she had a spot at Founders Hall. She joined one year before she retired from her job

as Assessor for the Town of Pound Ridge, a position she held for 25 years. A big fan of Founders Hall

classes, her favorites are aerobics, bridge and the discussion-based classes, such as “In Search of the

American Soul” and “Great Decisions.” She usually visits Founders Hall four days a week.

Carole sees three big benefits to becoming a monthly donor. “I think I give more annually as a monthly

donor than I did before, but I don’t notice it as much because it is spread out,” Carole explained. And she

feels good about giving at a higher level because she loves Founders Hall so much. Secondly, she said,

“I don’t have to think about it anymore.” Carole set up her monthly donation so that it charges her credit

card every month. Plus, “the mailings are less, which is good,” she added with a smile. Becoming a

monthly donor has many benefits, as Carole’s experience shows.

JANET GEBBIA MANNUCCIA | Member Since 2012For Janet Gebbia Mannuccia, Founders Hall has opened a whole world of learning.

“I am here almost every day,” Janet says. “I take multiple art classes each semester.”

Over the eight years Janet and her husband Sal have been members, she has taken a

variety of classes, enjoyed the social events, and formed friendships. Art is her passion,

and the art program – classes range from cartography to watercolors – fuels her fire.

Janet and Sal joined Founders Circle by leaving a bequest to Founders Hall in their wills. “I want future

generations to benefit from Founders Hall the way I have,” Janet explained. “I am very appreciative of the

opportunities Founders Hall gave me, and I want to ensure that other people have the same opportunities.”

Ever the artist, Janet can see something in her mind’s eye and make it a reality for others.

These forward-thinking and caring individuals are linking their legacy with Founders Hall by leaving a bequest in their wills, ensuring Founders Hall will be available for future generations
