MAKERSPACETEENSGAMINGCLASSES

Over the summer, we began an ambitious renovation designed to transform existing multi-tiered bookstacks into a 2,000 square-foot Learning Commons. As the landscape of public libraries continues to evolve, it has become paramount to establish a substantial physical space to serve as a clear showcase for the direction our service model is transitioning towards. Rather than creating either a traditional teen or makerspace, this area would take the concept of a learning commons, often found in academic libraries, and adapt it for a public library setting. This space provides our members with a glimpse into the vibrant future of libraries, where a high-quality public education is made available through content creation technology, gaming, virtual reality experiences, and traditional classes. See page 3 for more information.

CONNETQUOT PUBLIC LIBRARY is proud to announce the opening of our newest space.

The Learning Commons was designed to meet three modern goals for library service: fi rst, to provide a central location for all of our makerspace equipment, including 3-D printers, green screen, die cutting, and sewing machines; second, to offer a vibrant and functional area for teens/young adults to study, collaborate, and game; andfi nally, to provide the versatility needed to accommodate meetings or classes.

WHAT IS THE LEARNING COMMONS?

A collaborative space to foster learning and creativity through access to high-tech tools, like 3-D printers, a green screen studio, Cricut die cutting machines, Apple iMacs, and low-tech tools, like sewing machines.

A dedicated and welcoming space for our teen members to learn, work, play, and collaborate, which includes our extensive Teen book collection and room for classes, events, & meetings.

WHO IS THE LEARNING COMMONS FOR?

While many of the services and equipment will appeal to teens and young adults, the Learning Commons is for any member of the community who wants to LEARN & INNOVATE.

New and exciting curriculum is being developed for the Learning Commons, including coding/hardware classes, and 3-D modeling/printing, in addition to our popular line-up of teen classes.
