General Media Coverage Notice

From time to time, we receive requests from mass media representatives (newspapers, magazines, radio or television stations, web sites) to come onto school property to report on and/or photograph/record an aspect of the school or its programs. These may thereafter be digitally manipulated, published, broadcast, re-broadcast or sold to other media outlets. Media requests will be carefully considered before being approved by the principal. Schools may cooperate with the media, within reason, to encourage celebration of school achievements and share information with others. However, we recognize that there are instances where you may not wish your child to be recorded. If you do not wish your child to participate in media coverage, school staff will involve your child in other activities during the media’s attendance. In cases where the media wish to interview, photograph, or profile your child in the school, the principal will seek your written consent in advance of each media request. If your consent is absent, no such interview will take place. The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) cannot prevent media outlets from photographing students from vantage points beyond our control, such as outside the school or across the street from the school. Nor can the CBE prevent the media from interviewing students at these locations. If this is a concern, you should discuss the matter with your child to alert your child to this possibility. Similarly, parents and the media may take recordings of children at public events in the school or off-site. In such instances, your child’s image or voice or a digital manipulation of the image or audio may be recorded, broadcast or published. Once the photograph or recording has been taken, the CBE cannot restrict or limit subsequent publication or re-broadcast.

If you have any questions regarding this notice, please contact your school principal.

Western Canada High School Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for Network Information Resources

Statement of Purpose

Western Canada High School aims to help each student become a competent, productive and self-directed young adult through the pursuit of learning. Our school provides an excellent learning and information resource via our internet access, networked computers and L.A.W.N. (Learner Access Wireless Network). However, in order to effectively and safely use these resources, students and parents must be aware of a few facts and rules. In signing the reverse side of this form, the student agrees to abide by and follow these guidelines at all times.

L.A.W.N. Internet Filtering and Caution Western Canada is a school of excellence and has a rich academic tradition. In order to facilitate maximal learning, we are a CBE Level 3 school which means that we have the least restrictive internet filtering possible. Students are able to research with very limited restrictions and can therefore reach some questionable content. At the high school level, students are expected to be responsible, exercise personal due diligence, and ensure that the following guidelines are upheld:

Students are not to actively seek out and visit inappropriate websites. These include websites that contain pornographic, hateful, racist, criminal, or any activity deemed inappropriate by WCHS staff. Should a student accidentally encounter such a website, they are to leave that site immediately and inform the teacher.

Students must recognise that the internet is a huge source of misinformation as well as information. Students researching information should be careful to consider the source of such information, using reliable non commercial sites, as well as getting multiple sources to verify information.

Gaming Computer gaming is not permitted at WCHS. Gaming can and

does compromise network memory, internet speed and represents the loss availability of computer access for another student who might need one. Therefore, students are NOT ALLOWED to game using school computers unless that gaming is connected to curricular content and expressly allowed by a teacher for an educational purpose.

Social Networking and Communication While currently social networking websites are not strictly disallowed, their use is not condoned. If a student is on a social networking website, the following guidelines must be followed:

Students must ensure that privacy settings are maximized to avoid unwanted solicitations or viewing by others whose motives may be questionable.

Posting of specific personal information is not allowed.

Students will not post personal information about other people, including family members, fellow students, teacher or friends.

Internet predators exist who misrepresent their age, sex or personality in order to meet children and young adults. Students should under no circumstances meet with an internet acquaintance without parent or guardian permission, and with adequate supervision.

Students will not engage in cyber bullying, which is defined as the “use of communication technologies to support deliberate and hostile behaviour by an individual or group that is intended to harm others." This may include sending hateful or insulting remarks to others, posting unwanted pictures for others to see on the internet, sending threats or even as simple as continuing to send e-mail to someone who has requested no further contact. Cyber-bullying is a criminal act and will be dealt with accordingly.

Network Monitoring Students and parents should be aware that electronic logs are kept. They record who, when and what occurs on the CBE network and CBE devices. All CBE network accounts are subject to reasonable search. Users of the CBE network are not anonymous. Moreover, many WCHS computers have monitoring software enabled that allows teachers to view a student’s activities.

Other Expectations Students are not to use WCHS computers to post, send or

download inappropriate material. In general, students must understand that all rules of expected

conduct, appropriate language, fair and respectful comments, and responsible behaviour of a CBE student apply also to their conduct in using CBE computers and the school network. I understand that consequences for breaking those rules may result in the limitation or withdrawal of the privilege of having access to the CBE network and of having Internet access.

The CBE and staff of Western Canada High School are not responsible for any loss of damages associated with its network, including losses associated with interruptions in service or loss of data.

Consequences If a student fails to comply with the Acceptable Use Policy, school disciplinary action may result and will follow the normal course of fair and accountable administrative process. Some forms of school-based responses to students for failure to use the supported network appropriately may include:

Use of Internet only with direct supervision Suspension of network and Internet privileges. Cancellation of network and Internet privileges. Expulsion from school. Legal action.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

A wireless student network (Open Access) for internet access is provided at Western Canada High School and student-owned personal electronic devices such as laptops, netbooks, tablets, smart phones and digital storage devices will be permitted on campus. The use of these devices by students, with the guidance of parents and teachers, will assist in addressing individual student preferences and needs for learning. Individual subject teachers will clarify and instruct students on the appropriate use of such devices in their classroom.

Western Canada High School encourages the use of computing and network resources to enhance the learning environment of the school community. Access to the computing and network environment is to be used in effective, ethical and lawful ways that support the policies of the Calgary Board of Education. http://www.cbe.ab.ca/policies/governance.asp#ends

This Open Access will be available to students on a voluntary basis and is governed by Western Canada High School’s Acceptable Use Policy which focuses on student learning and places the responsibility on the students for compliance. Parents/guardians are encouraged to discuss the learning opportunities and the risks with their son or daughter. Western Canada High School’s Acceptable Use Policy is included in this mail-out and will be located on the school web site http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b816/ . Copies of these documents are also available through the main office.

Please Note:

• Responsibility for loss, theft or damage to student devices rests solely with the student.

• Tech support will not be available for personal devices.

• Content filtering that is normally used to filter inappropriate materials on the school’s internal network will also be applied to the open access network.

• Items that students must not bring into the school learning environment include, but are not limited to, sites, programs and software in contravention of WCHS Acceptable Use Policy.

What you need to know about The Fine and Performing Arts Program at Western Canada High School as an incoming Grade 10 Student

Dear Grade 10 Students/Parents, You are about to embark on an incredible three years at Western Canada High School full of many great opportunities and experiences. Annually, we see 50% of Western Canada High School’s total student population enrolled in a Fine and Performing Arts Course. We have a full slate of opportunities to choose from in each of the disciplines, which include: Dance, Drama, Visual Art, Choir and Band. In an effort to ensure that you as students/parents do not miss out on the incredible opportunities available in the Fine Arts at Western, you will find some important information that is specific and relevant to all incoming Grade 10 students who may wish to get involved in one or many of the Fine and Performing Arts Programs. It is important to note that all of our Fine and Performing Arts offerings are scheduled classes for credit. Courses take place during the school day, before school and after school. Please see the details below by discipline for important information.

Band: Western is proud to boast one of the largest Music programs in the city of Calgary with close to 350 students annually enrolled in the Band Program. At the Grade 10 level, here is what the Band Program looks like:

The Grade 10 Concert Band is open to all students who have taken band in junior high OR students that have spent at least one year studying their instrument privately If you already have a full schedule, it IS STILL POSSIBLE to enroll in the Grade 10 Concert Band. The Grade 10 Concert Band is called Band AM (Instrumental Music 10 5cr_cohort a). This is a full year 5-credit course. The class meets on Tuesday and Friday mornings: Tuesdays from 7:00-8:30am and Fridays from 7:00-9:00am. If you are enrolled in Band 10 day block (Instrumental Music 10_5cr), you should also be enrolled in Band 15AM (Band 15_5cr). Band 15AM is your course enrollment for the Grade 10 Concert Band, which is the full year AM course. This ensures you get 5 credits and a mark for Band 10 day block (Instrumental Music 10_5cr) an additional 5 credits and a mark for Band 15AM (Band 15_5cr). Grade 10 Concert Band: Each year the Grade 10 Concert Band goes to Band Camp, performs a Winter and Year End Concert, which are both held at the world class Jack Singer Concert Hall, and is a featured performance ensemble at

many WCHS events. This ensemble leads to our Sr. ensembles in Grades 11 and 12. Those ensembles tour annually and have recently travelled to BC and Los Angeles. Western Canada High School Debate Club

Dear parents and guardians of incoming Grade 10s,

Every September, the Western Canada High School Debate Club is thrilled to welcome many new club members to our ranks. As one of the top Debate Clubs in the country, our philosophy is to build a highly inclusive and diverse debate community, where all students can learn from and contribute to our weekly clashes of ideas. We invite students of all abilities and interest to join, whether they are shy teens who wish to build the confidence to speak in front of others, or gregarious young adults who already share every idea they have with the world. As part of Western’s commitment to French immersion education, we also offer numerous opportunities to debate in French, with many unique opportunities offered every year for our bilingual students. Regular club meetings run on Thursdays after school from 3:45 to 5:15pm. While many of our club members debate competitively in tournaments, some choose to come to meetings with the aim of self-improvement alone. Whatever your child’s goals may be, there is a place for her or him in our Debate Club. For those club members who do choose to compete, we expect there will be many opportunities to travel in the upcoming year. We expect to attend leading debate tournaments at Loyola College of Law (New Orleans), the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), and at the University of Ottawa in the 2019-20 school year, among other provincial and national events. Any interested club member, including incoming students, may register to attend such tournaments.

Please come join us at our first meeting in September to learn more about this fantastic opportunity!

Where: Western Canada High School Theatre

Date: Thursday, September 19th, 2019 at 3:45pm (immediately after school)

If this already sounds interesting, we are currently collecting expressions of interest from students who may wish to attend the fall tournaments in New Orleans (September; waitlist only), Edmonton (October), and Vancouver (November). For more information please contact Coach Laroche via email (see below). The Western Debate Club looks forward to another successful year in 2019-20, and we hope that your child will be a part of our continuing legacy.
