eLearnings Finish work and Composite Materials

Overview -Finish work is applicable to all interior surfaces of the building-walls, floors and ceilings -Should be resistant to wear, be cleanable, durable, comfortable and safe to walk on -Ceilings should be relatively maintenance free -Additional factors may include acoustic qualities, fire resistance, thermal insulation and economical value -Colour, textures, pattern control the interior aesthetic of the space Walls Plaster -Made using calcined gypsum and water, fine sand and light weight aggregates -Durable, relatively lightweight, fire resistance, can be used on any wall or ceiling surface that is not subject to moisture

Adhesion process: Thin-set

• Tile is bonded to a continuous, stable backing with a thin coat of dry set mortar, latex-Portland, epoxy or organic adhesive

• Wet areas require fiberglass backing • Floors suitable are concrete and

double wood

mortar • This allows the natural curvature of

the surface to be retained • Mortar bed is also not affected by

prolonged contact with water • Suitable beds include cured

Installation -Requires a wood subfloor for planks -blocks require a flat, dry, clean surface -Should not be installed until structure is enclosed as variation can occur when over

exposed to moisture or exterior conditions -As it is decorative it should be the final part of the construction process

Suspended -Suspended from an overhead structure to provide a crawl space for mechanical services -This also provides a small insulation property as an air gap is created -All consist of a grid-making the tiles easily replaceable and easy access to ceiling space from any location
