FOR.EWORI)Economic globalization has become an irresistible trendin the new century.China' s accession into WTO and Beijing' s successfulbidding for Olyrnpic'2008 indicate that China is posi-tively participating in the signi{icant trend o{ economicglobalization. The Chinese goverrunent has issued a series of policiesencouraging and supporting competent construction en-terprises to develop their business in the overseas con-struction market. 'lhe high-speed sustained economicgrowth of China has been attracting more and more in-vestors, designers and contractors from dif{erent coun-tries of the world. To support both Chinese constructioncompanies' going abroad and foreign companies enteringChina, the Chinese construction indr.rstry needs a greatnumber o{ personnei who have a basic abiiity to commu-nicate in a foreign language and to understand the inter-national corrinon practices in the contracting business. In order to meet this need, we have compiled the Prac-tical Oral English for Construction and Contractingt2

il$srness.-r-:-,:rg our initial design and compilation of this book, ilr= :ra\/e tried to adhere to the following principles:fmphasis on international cornmon practices in theruinfracting business. Being designed on the basis of:DlC Conditions of Contract, the book presents scene--'i,cgues focusing on the main activities in pre-contract:,iges as well as the contract impiementation stage, so:::at readers can acquaint themselves with the corrunon::actice of intemational contracting business while prac-:::ing language"Emphasis on construction and contracting businessterms. The technoiogies adopted vary a lot {rom project.: project, brrt the business rules are colrunon or similarr different projects. The book tries to avoid special en-rineering technology in order that the readers can paynore attention to contracting conventions and businessterms. Under the market economy, contracting activi-iies can't be simply regarded as project execution; theyalso cover two other important activities i. e. rnarketingand tendering in pre-contract stage. They r-rsually have set to,high a standard for themselves in their initiai step. A*s aresult, they give up halfway. The most effective way oilearning oral English is to talk to foreigners in English. In this book, we have selected basic English dialoguesegments related to the construction and contractingbusiness. In order to make our oral trnglish book {riendlyto the readers, we have designed a por:ket edition at-tached with a CD. In this way, the readers can read andlisten anywhere and anytime. If the readers are self -learners , we' d like to suggest the following steps: first-ly, start by listening to the CI) player repeatedly untilyou become familiat with the dialogue and the keywords. Secondly, open the book and read the text, i-dentify which sentence or word you did not grasp. R: How can we obtain the "selling Price" from the"Cirst Price"?A: A few coefficients will be derived from the per-centages of insurance, surety bonds, contin-gencies, conlpany overhead-* and pro{it. Then, fbst Price multiplied by the coefficient equais

A: AJter our study of your tender document, I'mpleased to inform you that your contpany is ac_cepted as one of the final three competitive ten_derers , and we' d like to have more detail infor_mation related to your tender proposal for ourproper assessment to your tender.B: We're very pleased to provide necessary infor_mation to prove our technical advantages andprice competitiveness.

A: Generally speaking, your bidding document isvery attractive, but rcmething stiil needs to beclarified. Let' s start with the ConstructionMethod Statement. Your Master programshows that your superstructure works is in par-allel with the basement structure work. Canyou explain to us in detail how you propose toachieve that?52

    35/66

B: Sure. We intend to build the basement '!-i::Top-down Method. Diaphragm walls and 1 -wiil be constructed first to repiace the basen'.::.peripheral w-alls and inside columns and tr=:the reinforced concrete ground slab will :tpoured with two 9m by 9m square openings --:small excavators into the underground and i::the outlet of earth excavated. A{ter the ean:excavation in the First Basement, the floor slalof First Basement will be poured. And in tl:isame way, the Second Basement and the Thir:Basement will be constructed. Meanwhile, th.superstructure can be executed in parallel. I:-this way, the work period can be greatly re-duced, which will meet your requirement for avery tight construction duration.A: I'm impressed by this operation very much.Since the substructure works is fundamental tcthe whole project, we need to have more infor-rnation about it. Would it be possible for you tosubmit a separate Method Statement for this?No probiem. We'11 submit it to you in 2 days.Another question, the price of your sprinklersystem is quite high in comparison with otherbidders. As a basis of criteria, we prefer the

tender most beneficial to our client technica--',as well as economically. You know, the sprinkler system is a very im1rcr-tant part of the fire-fighting system. C,onsider-ing your high quality requirement for the com-ponents of the' sprinkler system, we selectedimported products from Britain for our tender.High quality and long-distance transportationmake our price of this part relatively higher.Sounds reasonable. We don't want to sacrificequality for profit. But we stili think you needto carefully select your foreign suppliers. Onlythe most competitive price can make you the fi-nal winner.'fhank you for pointing this out to us. We willtake it seriously and make further verification oradjustments where necessary. But your adjustment must be made within 7days. We will issue the Letter of Acceptance tothe winner of the contract within 10 days.OK. We will submit our modified B. O. Q.with the price analysis within one week. Butwe beiieve you will put the priority on theprogress and quality of the Works. We wiil make our final judgment on it. G
