Consul...ting FEBRUARY 2012 Publication of the Consulate General of Mexico in Toronto President Felipe Calderón Meets with Ambassadors and Consuls President Felipe Calderón hosted a lunch meeting for Mexican ambassadors and consuls at the Castillo de Cha- pultepec in Mexico City on January 5. The event was part of the XXIII Meeting of Am- bassadors and Consuls, which was attended by the Ambassa- dor of Mexico to Canada, Francisco Barrio, and the Consul General of Mexico in Toronto, Mauricio Toussaint, among others. Also present were the lea- ders of the Legislative and Judicial Branches, cabinet ministers, speakers and pane- llists, as well as Emeritus and Eminent Ambassadors. Fo- reign Minister Patricia Espi- nosa and President Felipe Calderón spoke at the mee- ting. In his speech, President Calderón acknowledged the role played by Mexican diplo- mats in positioning Mexico as "an important actor in interna- tional cooperation and deve- lopment, in terms of the integra- tion of Latin America and the Caribbean; fundamental issues for the future of humanity, such as climate change and the envi- ronment; and fundamental issues for the current global economy, such as the leadership of the G20." President Calderón thanked the members of the Mexican Foreign Service for their loyalty, profes- sionalism and patriotism. He went on to say "today our diplo- macy works and works well around the world, and our voice, the voice of Mexico, in spite of everything, is heard and respec- ted on the international stage." The president added that the ambassadors' and consuls' work abroad "has been indispensable in contributing to the develop- ment of Mexico and in projec- ting the image of our country abroad." In her speech, the Foreign Minister, Ambassador Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, noted that, thanks to Mexico's ambassadors and consuls, our country has friendly and cooperative rela- tions with practically every na- tion in the world. "We do not have any interna- tional or bilateral conflicts. As a country, we are open to dialogue, trade, and exchange with other nations," she added. Minister Espinosa stressed that "our country is respected for its responsible approach to impor- tant global issues, and for its contributions to international peace and security; the promo- tion of dialogue and cooperation among nations; the defence of international rights; and the fos- tering of continuous and sustai- nable development." President Felipe Calderón

hosted a lunch meeting for

Mexican ambassadors and

consuls at the Castillo de Cha-

pultepec in Mexico City on

January 5. The event was part

of the XXIII Meeting of Am-

bassadors and Consuls, which

was attended by the Ambassa-

dor of Mexico to Canada,

Mexican Artists Participate in Winnipeg's Snow Sculpture Symposium

Maribel Portela and

Yolanda Paulsen will

participate in the Interna-

tional Snow Sculpture

Symposium in Winni-

peg, Manitoba from

February 17-26.

The Mexican team will

join Réal Bérard, a Ca-

nadian sculptor. The

three artists will work

together on one gigantic

three-metre piece.

The event is part of the Consulate Gen-

eral of Mexico's 2012 Cultural Promotion

Program.

The sculpture festival provides an oppor-

tunity for artists from around the world to

express themselves in a cooperative spirit

through the perishable form of snow sculp-

ture.

Also among the 12 participating teams is

another group named Mexico, with artist

Isabel Santamaría.

Mexican Film Series Continues The Consulate

General of Mexico

in Toronto and the

can Studies Program

are hosting a Mexi-

can Film Series

called "La visión de

Two projections will fol-

• March 14: "Flor Silvestre"

[Wild Flower] (1943), by

Emilio Fernández, with

commentary by Susan An-

tebi.

• March 28: "La perla" [The

Pearl] (1945), by Emilio

Fernández, with commentary

by Ramiro Armas Austria.

As it does each year, the government of

Mexico will participate, in this year's Interna-

tional Mining Convention which will run

from March 4-7 at the Metro Toronto Con-

vention Centre. This is the world's leading

mining convention. The show is organized by

the Prospectors & Developers' Association of

Canada (PDAC), which brings together a

wide array of sectors connected to the global

mining industry. Last year, the show at-

tracted 27,700 participants from 120 coun-

tries.

Officials from the Mexican delegation on a

working visit to the show will meet with

Canadian mining companies and executives

from the financial sector. The delegation will

also participate in the bilateral Mining Task

Force and the second annual Mexico Mining

Day, which will be held on Tuesday, March 6.

CRFA Foodservice Show

On March 4-6, Mexico will host a booth at

the CRFA Foodservice Show at the Direct

Energy Centre in Toronto. The largest of its

kind in Canada, the event boasts over 1,200

exhibitors, including hotels, restaurants, and

catering companies, among others.

The 2012 show is the second time that the

Mexican government, through its representa-

tion from SAGARPA in Canada, is promot-

ing a selection of Mexican products which

will be on display at the Mexico booth. This

year, the stand is planned to showcase 20

companies which market processed products

from the agrifood industry.

The Mexico booth will also be offering its

visitors delicious samples of Mexican cui-

sine, as well as tequila, mezcal and sotol

tastings.

Consular Services during December 2011

The Consulate General recently moved its

office in order to better serve the general

public.

Our new address is 11 King St West, Suite

350, Toronto ON, M5H 4C7. Our office is

open to the public Monday to Friday from

9:00am to 1:00pm. The office is also open

on Wednesday afternoons from 3:00pm to

4:30pm by appointment.

In addition to providing consular services

such as issuing passports, consular registra-

tions and visas to foreigners, the Consulate

provides notarial services and notarized

powers of attorney, such as birth and marria-

ge registrations and legalizations. The Con-

sulate also attends to Mexican citizens

through its Consular Protection department

and to Mexican agricultural workers through

the Seasonal Agricultural Workers' Program

(SAWP).

Periodically, the Consulate conducts su-

pervisory visits to farms that employ Mexi-

can agricultural workers to ensure that the

SAWP is functioning well and to assist wor-

kers in their dealings with Canadian institu-

tions.

The exhibition will

remain at the

ROM until April

9, 2012, when it will

travel to Ottawa to

open at the Canadian

Museum of Civiliza-

tions (CMC) from

May 18 to October

28, 2012.

This significant

exhibition was created

exclusively for Can-

ada, and is the result

of an agreement for

collaboration between

the Instituto Nacional

de Antropología e

Historia (INAH) of

México, the ROM and

the CMC.

Inspired by the exhi-

bition, the ROM is

holding a lecture se-

ries on the Maya

world. The lectures are

held on Saturdays

from 1:30-3:30pm

until February 25.

The Mexican researcher Nayelli

Castro, from the University of Ot-

tawa, visited Toronto on February 2

to give a talk entitled "The Hispanic

Philosophical Tradition and Latin

American Philosophy: A Transla-

tion Studies Perspective" at York

University's Glendon College.

The event was organized by the School of

Translation and the Department of Hispanic

Studies at Glendon College.

Nayelli Castro Ramírez holds a BA in Phi-

losophy, an MA in translation from

El Colegio de México and is cur-

rently a PHD candidate in Transla-

tion Studies at the University of

Ottawa.

Castro spoke about the Spanish

language as a language of thought,

and discussed the Hispanic philoso-

phical tradition in contrast to other philosophi-

cal traditions (the English, French and Ger-

man traditions), over the second half of the

20th century.

Lecture on Latin American Philosophy

16th Children Drawing Contest The Ministry of Foreign Affairs

of Mexico, by means of the Insti-

tute for Mexicans Abroad, invites

all children around the world be-

tween 7 and 11 years old, to par-

ticipate in the 16th Children Draw-

ing Contest “This is my Mexico”.

The theme of the contest in 2012

is “5 de Mayo; 150th Anniversary

of the Battle of Puebla” in com-

memoration of the struggle that

took place in 1862 when Mexico,

as a country under construction,

was invaded by French troops, one

of the most powerful armies of that

time.
