TIMES CITY THE TIMES OF INDIA, CHENNAI WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10, 2010 5 CMYK How to turn T Nagar pedestrian-friendly Consultant To Give Report This Friday On... B h a m a D e v i R a v i | TNN Chennai: In probably the first concerted effort to make T Na- gar pedestrian-friendly, a report will be submitted to the Chen- nai Corporation on Friday. The report on ‘T Nagar pedestrianisation and redevel- opment project’, prepared by Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj and Townland Consultants, will pro- vide a comprehensive picture of the problems and solutions. Putting existing pedestrian space to better use and creation of more space are likely to be the highlights of the report. This, the project aims to achieve, through repositioning of hawk- ers and preventing haphazard parking of vehicles. “The aim is to provide amenities to all, and our top pri- ority is to make the area pedes- trian-friendly and ensure smooth traffic flow,” said cor- poration commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni. “There are five stake- holders in the area under sur- vey and the objective is to ad- dress their many concerns,” he added. The methodology for the improvement and redevelop- ment would factor in concerns of the residents of the neigh- bourhood, shopkeepers on Us- man Road, shoppers who are not residents of the area, auto driv- ers, hawkers and staff employed in the thousands of shops. The project will cover an area of 6.85 sq km, added Lakhoni. “Random surveys of the stake holders would be con- ducted before a blueprint is pre- pared,” said K Phanindra Red- dy, managing director and CEO of Tamil Nadu Urban Infra- structure Services Limited. “Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj and Townland Consultants would conduct wide ranging sur- veys,” he added. Emerging as a key commuter area, T Nagar has witnessed ex- ponential growth; hundreds of thousands of people pass through the area every day. “The flip-side to living in an area with good access to all your needs is the higher vehicular movement and greater noise pollution. The relentless movement of people has made living and commut- ing in the area a stress-filled ex- perience,” says K Padma, a res- ident of the area for 15 years. Even as a number of infra- structure facilities such as fly- overs, and traffic modifications have taken place in recent years, the burden of development is still a challenge, said officials. “The project offers to exam- ine options for a more holistic solution,” said Lakhoni. “Even policy suggestions and a para- digm shift would be explored, if suggested by the consultants,” he added. The idea of area-spe- cific redevelopment evolved in the city over two years ago, with Chennai City Connect, an NGO and entities such as Chennai Corporation working in tandem. Reshuffle in police top brass, ADGPs posted in city, dists TIMES NEWS NETWORK Chennai: The home depart- ment has promoted T Rad- hakrishnan, once suspended for his alleged involvement in the question paper leak case in the constabulary examina- tion, as additional director general of police and posted him in the Civil Supplies CID, Chennai. Youth posing as swami cons elderly couple of jewellery TIMES NEWS NETWORK Chennai: A youth posing as a practitioner of occult conned an elderly couple and escaped with 14 sover- eigns of gold jewellery from their house in the Elephant Gate area on Monday. According to the police, Hyder (24) of Bhaktha- vatchalam Colony in Vyasarpadi, a week ago met Sivagami (65) and her hus- band Govindan (70) at their house of Seven Wells. All of them had met earlier, too. The couple spoke about their problems and Hyder devised a plan to cheat them. He went into the puja room and “performed” a puja. He came out after some time and claimed that some evil spirits were plaguing them. To drive them away, he said, a special puja had to be per- formed. Accordingly, Hyder came to their house early on Mon- day morning. He prepared for the special puja and then began chanting loudly. Af- ter an hour, Hyder asked Govindan to go out and stay in his room. He then asked Sivagami to keep her jewels in the puja room so that the spirits act- ing on her ‘mangalsu- tra’ could also be driv- en away. Sivagami obeyed, re- moved all her jewels and placed them on a plate. After a few min- utes, he asked her to remain in the puja room while he sprinkled holy water all over the house. When he did not return and she realised that Hyder had escaped with 14 sovereigns of gold jewellery, Govindan lodged a com- plaint with the Seven Wells police who registered a case and launched a hunt for the accused. HC refuses to interfere with IPL schedule TIMES NEWS NETWORK Chennai: The Madras High Court has refused to in- terfere with the IPL’s season-3 schedule, and has re- jected a plea which said that the event overlapped the board examinations for SSLC and plus-two. Dismissing a PIL filed by film producer Hennry on Tuesday, Chief Justice HL Gokhale and Justice V Dhanapalan, asked the authorities con- cerned to consider the representation. Hennry said the IPL’s March to April schedule overlapped the board examina- tions, and it would af- fect the students’ preparations. Besides seeking a stay on the schedule, the petitioner wanted the court to direct the IPL management and the state to frame guide- lines to regulate and monitor sports activities in the students’ interest. This is the second PIL filed by Hennry, whose first petition was disposed of by the court on February 17 with a direction that he sub- mit a representation to the authorities. He then ap- proached the BCCI and the IPL. Since there was no response from them, he filed the present petition. The first bench, disapproving of the BCCI’s stand that the state did not have jurisdiction over the is- sue, said the authorities should pass an order, be- fore conveying the decision to the petitioner. “If the Centre is of the view that the representation deserves to be rejected, it may reject the same with- out issuing notice to the BCCI. But it must first take some decision on the representation, and that de- cision should be communicated to the petitioner,” the judges said.
