CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT

Consumer Protection Act

• It seeks to protect and promote the consumer’s interest through a speedy and inexpensive redressal of grievance

Who is a Consumer?

Any person who buys any goods for a consideration ,which has been paid or promised , or partly paid and partly promised or under any scheme of deferred payment. It includes any users of such goods, when such a use is made with the approval of the buyers

• RIGHT TO SAFTEY • RIGHT TO BE INFORMED• RIGHT TO CHOOSE• RIGHT TO BE HEARD• RIGHT TO SEEK REDRESSAL• RIGHT TO CONSUMER

EDUCATION

Consumer Responsibilities

• Be aware of products and services available

• Buy standardised goods • Learn about the risk

associated with products

• Read labels carefully• Ask for a bill for every

purchase

Redressal Agencies

• District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum

• State Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum

• National Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum

DISTRICT FORUM

• It consisit of a president and two other members appointed by state government

• Considers those cases in which compensation claimed does not exceed Rs 20 Lakhs

STATE COMMISSION

• It consists of a president and not less than two other members appointed by state government

• Considers those cases in which compensation claimed exceeds 20 Lakhs but does not exceed Rs 1 Crore

NATIONAL COMMISSION

• It consists of a president and at least four other members

• Considers those cases in which compensation claimed exceeds Rs 1 Crore

Who can file a complaint?• Any Consumer• Any registered consumer

association• The Central Government or

State Government• One or more consumers on

behalf of numerous consumers having same interest

• A legal heir or representative of a deceased consumer
