Jackson College
What is a Lineworker?
A Lineworker are the utility workers who install, maintain and repair the
powerlines that move electricity. They may inspect and test power lines and
equipment, and identify defective devices, voltage regulators, transformers and
switches.
In this program, students take classes in safety, fitness, basic electricity, and
energy industry fundamentals, as well as a series of climbing courses through
Consumers Energy.
Admission Requirements and process for the Lineworker Program
1. Students must attend an Information session. You can find and register for
an information session here: https://www.jccmi.edu/profiles/lineworker/
2. Students must apply to Jackson College
3. Students must attend a New Student Orientation
4. Students will register for the following classes for the first semester:
a. EGY 101 (3 Cr)
b. ELT 106 (3 Cr)
c. HPF 165 (2 Cr)
i. This course is taken as a co-requisite to EGY-111.
d. MFG 135 (3 Cr)
5. Students will register for Climbing Clinic
a. EGY 110 (0.5 Cr)
b. Students must participate in a minimum of 2 climbs. Students will be
assigned to available dates.
6. Students are required to pass a Fitness Assessment 2 weeks prior to the 3
Day orientation. This is done as part of HPF 165 or by arrangement if a
visiting student.
7. Students will register for a climbing orientation
a. EGY 111 (1.5 Cr)
b. Student must participate in a 3-day orientation with Consumers.
Students will be assigned to available dates.
c. This course is taken as a co-requisite to HPF-165
d. A fitness assessment must be passed in order to participate in this
course.
8. Students will register for Climbing School – 11 weeks
a. EGY 112 (7 Cr)

b. Student must pass Drug Test (must be within 30 days prior to the
start of climb school).
c. Student must pass Background Check
d. Student must provide Driving Record. Form provided by Consumers.

EGY-101 Energy Ind Fund
Energy Industry Fundamentals provides a broad understanding of the
electric and natural gas utility industry and the generation, transmission,
and distribution infrastructure, commonly called the "largest machine in the
world," which forms the backbone for the industry. The course includes
business models, regulations, types of energy and their conversion to useable
energy such as electric power, emergent technologies, and the connection to
careers in the energy industry. An ANSI accredited EIF Certificate will be
awarded upon successful completion of final certification exam.
ELT-106 Basic Elec & Fluid
This course will cover the principles of basic electrical, hydraulic, and
pneumatic circuits. Students will learn how to identify components of
electrical and fluid circuits, how to analyze circuits, and how to troubleshoot
industrial systems. At the end of the course they will be able to take the
Certified Production Technician Maintenance Awareness exam.
HPF-165 Lineworker Fitness
This course combines strength, flexibility, and conditioning training to
prepare students for pole climbing and lineworker fitness test. Proper
technique will be emphasized to ensure safety and continued progress. There
will be initial fitness testing and students will be responsible for tracking
their progress. (Co-Requisite EGY-111)
MFG-135 Industrial Safety
This course demonstrates methods of maintaining a safe work environment.
It introduces students to best safety practices as well as communication and
team building skills. Students will have the opportunity to take an MSSC
certification exam as well as earn their OSHA 10 card.
EGY-110 Climbing Clinic

This course will introduce students to pole climbing safety and techniques for
lineworkers. Must be 18 to participate in the course per Consumers Liability.
EGY-111 Climbing Orientation
This course will provide students with further instruction in pole climbing,
including equipment maintenance and different climbing techniques, rescues,
and knot-tying. Must be 18 to participate in the course per Consumers
Liability. (Co-Requisite HPF-165)
EGY-112 Climbing School
This course will help students achieve mastery of climbing techniques
through practice and refinement under the supervision of climbing
instructors. Must be 18 to participate in the course per Consumers Liability.
Additional Course Fees:
EGY 110 – Includes 2 climbs. There will be an additional fee if the student is
required to complete any additional climbs.
EGY 111 – Additional Fee of $350
EGY 112 – Additional Fee of $3,200
Background Check & Drug Screen
All background checks and drug screens will be completed through a platform called
CastleBranch. You will be given specific instructions on this once you are accepted
into the climb school. You will purchase two (2) packages: 1. Background Check
(JC54bg) and 2. Drug Test (JC54dt). No other forms of these will be acceptable.
Boot Requirements
See Addendum C for the boot requirements. It is highly recommended that you
purchase the boots early and start wearing them around to break them in before
attending the climb clinic.

Scholarship
See Addendum B for the scholarship form. This scholarship is available to use
toward the cost of the 11-week climb school. Fill out the application and submit it to
Scholarship deadlines are as follows:
Deadline Climb School Semester to be Taken
August 1 Fall Semester (Sept or Oct Start)
December 1 Spring Semester (Jan or Feb Start)
April 15 Summer Semester (May or Jun Start)
No Shows at a Climb Clinic or Orientation
Please note that this is a competitive program. If a student registers for a climb
clinic and/or a 3-day orientation, and does not show up on that date, it is the
responsibility of the student to make arrangements with Jackson College for a new
date. Students who “NO SHOW” any dates will be bumped to the bottom of the list.
Guest Students
In order to verify that Guest Students have met the requirements set forth by
Consumers Energy for this program, the guest student must provide the following
information prior to being registered for any climbs.
1. Transcript from home school.
2. Climb Clinic Verification Letter (for both climbs)
3. Verification of Fitness Assessment letter including date of completion.
Dates for Climb Clinics, 3-Day Orientation, & Climb School
Students will be assigned to dates based on availability.
Waitlist Determination
1. Posted Successful Completion of 3-day orientation
2. Grade in HPF-165
3. Overall GPA

When will I be notified of dates?
As soon as we have a list of dates from Consumers, students will be assigned
to dates. A letter will then be emailed to the student with an add drop form. The
student will be required to sign both the letter and the form and email it back.

Addendum A: Climbing Clinic
What you need to know
1. Marshall Training Center Safety Protocols
2. What to bring to the climbing clinic
a. Water, a light snack, a sturdy pair of work boots, a winning attitude.
3. How to dress for the climbing clinic:
a. Dress in layers that are easily put on/taken off. Some training may be
indoors, some may be outdoors. Be prepared for both. If the
temperature is cold, consider a light stocking cap for your head that
you can wear under a hard hat. Wear your work boots. Also, collared
shirts are best, as the harnesses can rub on your neck. All PPE will be
provided to you (hard hat, gloves, safety goggles and vest). There is no
need to bring your own, as you will be required to wear what is
provided by us.
4. Waiver Form:
a. You will be required to sign a waiver form on site at Marshall prior to
engaging in any climbing activity.

5. This is the self-screening questions that are required every morning you will
be on Consumers Energy campus. If you answer yes to any of the questions,
you will not be able to attend on that day.
