IET Faraday STEM ChallengeOn 23rd March Mr Leask took a group of 6 Year 7 students to Fallibroome Academy to take part in an IET Faraday STEM challenge.

The task was to utilise the new BBC Mircobit programmable

mini computers to design a prototype of a product that could be used to help someone in some way. The team chose home and leisure.

They created two fantastic product ideas. The first would help parents limit the time children spent in isolation using technology such as games consoles and encourage better social relationships and the second was a device to warn someone when lights were left on at home, saving the user money and reducing energy use and waste.

There was only 1 point separating first and third places in the five teams taking part. The judges decision was based on the team that worked the most consistently, unfortunately we narrowly missed out on first place. All students received ‘goody bags’ and the Wilmslow High School team were awarded a digital watch each as a consolation prize. However, the honour and an attractive glass trophy went to

Fallibroome.

Special mentions for Hannah James (7TDW), whose leadership was praised by the orgnisers, and Isaac Jackson (7NMB) who overcame some difficulties to create a really effective code. Well done also to Georgina Boyle (7NMB),

Jack Loynton (7TDW), Tom Baxter (7HCP) and Katie Hardy (7BCD) for working so well together on the day, all making vital and important contribtions.

NEWS

401 marathons in 401 days!On the 1st September 2015, Ben Smith began the mammoth challenge of running 401 marathons in 401 consecutive days. This means that he has NO days off until he is finished! This is a world record attempt but, more importantly to Ben, will hopefully raise £250,000 for two anti-bullying charities: Stonewall and Kidscape.

On Monday 11th April, Ben ran his 224th marathon in Macclesfield and 7 of our students went along to run the first mile with him. Before the run, Ben spoke a little about what he is doing and why. Out students described Ben as “friendly”, “amazing”, “determined”, “unstoppable” and “caring”.

Our students then presented Ben with a cheque for £75 for money they had raised for Stonewall and Kidscape before joining him running the first

mile of that day’s 26.4 miles around an outdoor track, some even did an extra one for added support!

Finally, Ben took a selfie with each student who had run with him for his ‘401 challenge Facebook page’. On this occasion, we broke the record for the most people to run with him to date!

It was a pleasure to meet such a truly inspirational and motivational man. He spoke of how we can all push through bad times in order to reach the amazing ones and also what can be achieved when we put our minds to it. His challenge seems almost super human and we wish him all the very best in his remaining 177 marathons.

If you would like to find out more about Ben’s challenge, run with Ben or make a donation, please go to: http://www.the401challenge.co.uk/ or text

the word BEN to 70660 to donate £5.

Ben has to eat a whopping 6,500

calories a day whilst completing the

challenge.

Over the 401 marathons, Ben will run just over 10,506 miles (the

equivalent distance between London

and Sydney).

Ben will go through approximately 21 pairs of trainers.

Pi, pizza and apostrophesA big thank you to all the Year 11 students and their parents who attended our first Pi, Pizza and Apostrophes evening the last week of term. The informal evening aimed to provide parents with top tips and handy hints that would help them support their child in the run up to their maths and English GCSE exams.

The evening was kicked off by Dean Schneider who treated us to an inspiring and motivational speech to get everyone fired up. Students and parents then attended a maths and English workshop sandwiched with a big slice of Domino’s Pizza in-between!

If you were unable to attend this event you can find the resources provided via this link/on the website. If you require any further information please contact Mrs Mackintosh ([email protected] )for maths and Ms Yates ([email protected]) for English.

Year 9 SkiOver the Easter break 45 excited Year 9 students enjoyed skiing and snowboarding in the beautiful Italian alpine resort of Bormio.

With snowy conditions and gorgeous sunny weather, students spent 5 hours a day learning to master the slopes, as well as participating in a wide range of evening entertainment activities.

All of the students made impressive progress in their chosen snowsport and grew in confidence.

Chloe’s ‘Shine’ ChallengeThe 27th November issue of High Notes featured an article about student Chloe Ward H10KD who trained for and completed a sponsored walk and raised £145.46 for the Shine Charity who help people with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.

This week she received a well deserved certificate and a thank you letter from Shine. Well done Chloe we are very proud of you!

Duke of Edinburgh practice hikeA group of 32 Year 11 students took a break from revision to take part in the Silver DofE practice expedition. It was an opportunity to refresh and improve navigation skills, and recall just how important it is to be ruthless when packing a rucksack that then has to be carried by you for three days! The expedition took place in the High Peak and Hope Valley. The dry weather held out although the campsites were rather muddy and there were a great many puddles to negotiate. Our campsites were as welcoming as ever – we have a good relationship with them now having used them for a number of years. On completion at the Fairholmes visitors’ centre at Ladybower reservoir, we bumped into a wedding party having photos taken with this stunning backdrop. Well done to all groups who can now look forward to the assessed expedition in July.

home and are only required to attend school to sit examinations or organised revision sessions.

Introducing Exam ThursdaysWe know that for some of our students exam nerves, or poor exam technique, can get in the way of their performance on the day. Therefore, in the run up to the exam season we are putting on Exam Thursdays.

These are an opportunity for Year 11, 12 and 13 students who want it, to get more exam practice before the real thing by booking themselves in for an extra exam. Students can do this on as few or as many of the Exam Thursdays as they wish.

If your son or daughter is interested in using Exam Thursdays in any of their subjects, they need to speak to their subject teacher.

There was better luck for Oskar Hirskyj Douglas (left) who was part of the England Rugby 7s team that won the Hong Kong 7s Plate final on Sunday.

Wilmslow Symphony OrchestraSt George’s Day Concert Press Release

Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra’s next concert takes place on St George’s Day, and how better to mark the occasion than by a concert of English music.

The main work is Elgar’s First Symphony, the composer at his peak, confident and flamboyant, but also romantic and expressive. It’s prefaced by his Cockaigne Overture, a countryman’s view of bustling Edwardian London. Elgar once said, regarding his Pomp and Circumstance Marches, that he had ”something of the soldier in me”.

As a change from ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ we are playing the Fifth of the Marches, a late work from 1930. But if you are in a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ mood, you can join in a novelty, a new arrangement of ‘Rule, Britannia!’ by clarinettist Geoff Thomason.Contrasting nicely with Elgar’s ebullience, Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves in the distillation of the English Pastoral style, a perfect piece of countryside quiet.

Robert Chasey conducts. The concert takes place on Saturday 23rd April at 7.45pm in Wilmslow Leisure Centre. Tickets cost £12 (Concession £10, Under 18s £2).

Tickets may be obtained from the Ticket Secretary (01925 756 144), at Bang & Olufsen, Alderley Rd (01625 527666), at Therapy, Bank Sq (01625 400113), or at the door.
