From the PrincipalOur Year 10 students will complete pre VCE subjects as well as a Pathways Program for students who choose a more practical approach to their learning. We offer both VCE and VCAL at both Year 11 and 12.

In 2021, we will continue to further develop our ‘Instructional Model’ which is providing a consistent model of teaching and learning within our classrooms to enhance and further improve student achievement.

We celebrated our 2020 Senior School results with 100% pass rate for our VCE students, which was outstanding, especially during a pandemic year.

Our 2020 Parent Opinion Survey demonstrated very high results again! We did not complete 2020 NAPLAN or 2020 Attitudes to School Survey due to COVID 19.

We are very keen to continue with our extra curriculum activities, which were sadly missed due to COVID 19 in 2020.

ReviewOur College will participate in a “Review” which is a requirement for all Government schools every 4 years. Our reviewer is Emma Richardson from VALAD Solutions. It will also include the following panel: Ken Robinson our Regional SEIL, Rob Duncan – Principal at Cranbourne West S.C and Konnie Prades – Principal at Lyndhurst S.C as Challenge Partners. The Principal, School Council President, staff and students will also be involved in the process.

The Review has been scheduled for mid-March, 2021. The Noble Park Secondary College Principal team are currently working hard to complete the self-evaluation with the final panel meeting scheduled at the end of March. I will keep Council informed of its progress. The Review will make recommendations for our next 4 year Strategic Plan, based upon our current reality and priorities for the future.

Please note important school dates in this newsletter.

Peer SupportOur Peer Support students will be running sessions with Year 7 classes and focusing on strengthening connections and Anti Bullying.

Lunar New YearIn the Year of the Ox, some of our community spoke about what the Lunar New Year means to them.

How and why is Lunar New Year important to you? As a little girl growing up in Malaysia, I remembered celebrating the Lunar New Year by receiving red packets filled with money called the ‘Ang Pow’ & central to this celebration is lots of eating & spending time with my family. I remembered sitting on my grandfather’s lap receiving the ‘Ang Pow’ and stroking his longest white bear and being fascinated how soft it felt.

When does Lunar New Year begin and how is it celebrated? The Lunar New Year was significant in our household starting with ‘Spring Cleaning’ where we cleaned our home as it is bad luck to clean on the first day of the Lunar New Year. My mother decorated our home with red posters of auspicious sayings, pots of kumquats, gladioli and oriental flowers. We ushered the New Year by wearing the ‘qi pao’ (traditional Chinese dress) – to start thenew year fresh and on an auspicious note. As children, we knew we were required to behave polite, greet everyone ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’ and avoid being scolded because we knew it would bring us bad luck. The one time of the year my father chose not to swear!

Please tell us about the customs and rituals you will have during the Lunar New Year celebrations? On Lunar New Year eve, we have a ‘Reunion Dinner’ (‘tuan nian fan’). This is a significant event as it reaffirms family members respect, love & harmony that binds us together as a family unit. Every family member is expected to attend the DINNER. I remembered that my parents will ensure the food served was lavish, abundant and good quality – just like other Chinese families. Being from West Malaysia, we start our dinner with “Yee Sang”. It is a traditional dish symbolic of good luck, prosperity, health and all things auspicious. This is a popular custom. When Yee Sang is eaten, the ritual is to toss the mixed ingredients high in the air with a shout of “Loh Hey” which literally means to ‘move upwards’ and/or any positive words such as prosperity, good luck, smooth year, great health, etc. It is symbolic of the wish for our fortunes to rise and expand during the forthcoming year. The enjoyment of Yee Sang during Lunar New Year is an age-old custom steeped in ancient tradition and culture.

Why is Lunar New Year important to you?Lunar New Year is celebrated to prestige the heavenly immortal and to remember the ancestors.

When does Lunar New Year begin and how is it celebrated?Lunar New Year will begin on 12, February. It is celebrated by gathering the families and relatives, sharing the happiness, brighten up their day, praying at the temple and making the delicious cultural food.

What are the traditional foods over the Lunar New Year period?

I don’t really celebrate here but I do go and buy my favourite snacks. Most Asian shops in Melbourne will sell them one month before the Lunar new year.. till 1-2 months after the new year. One of my favourite is pineapple tart.

The Year 7 students along with the peer support members, attended the Year 7 Camp held at Oasis Camp in Monbulk for their fun packed three day adventure. Students undertook a range of activities designed to promote teamwork, trust, collaboration and co-operation. Students were given the opportunity to bond with students from a diverse primary school feeder network as well as with their teachers. It was an amazing experience, jam packed with fun and excitement. Students participated in many activities, such as Rock Climbing, Bushwalking, Swimming, Candle Making, Flying-Fox, Reptile house and Initiative Games. It was an opportunity for year seven students to make new friendships and build better connections with their teachers.

Over the summer break, I and several other members of the school enjoyed watching the TV series The Queen’s Gambit (2020). It tells the story of a young girl named Beth Harmon and follows her journey to becoming a champion chess player. In the history of chess, the undisputed strongest female player or ‘Queen’ is considered to be Judit Polgar (see Picture 1). She was in the Top 10 of all ranked chess players for many years and competed in the 2005 World Chess Championship where she was the only woman among the participants. Polgar has written several chess books, including one called ‘A Game of Queens’, to teach chess to aspiring girls (and boys). In the diagrammed position (Picture 2), White (to move) can checkmate in four moves using the queen and bishop. The solution is given later in the newsletter.

Annual Secondary School Immunisation Program

Secondary School vaccinations

The Secondary School Vaccine Program offers free vaccinations to Year 7 and Year 10 students. These vaccines provide protection against:

Year 7 students

• Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (pertussis) - one injection

• Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – two injections spaced by a minimum of 6 months

Year 10 students

• Meningococcal ACWY – one injection

Parents/guardians of Year 7 and Year 10 students should look out for the vaccine consent forms coming home from school with your child. You need to read the information, complete and return the form regardless of whether your child is being vaccinated at school.

The CITY OF GREATER DANDNEONG immunisation service may contact you about the Secondary School Vaccine Program. Schools are authorised to provide basic parent/guardian contact details to local councils for this purpose. Contact the school by 28 February each year if you do not want your contact details given to the CITY OF GREATER DANDENONG immunisation service.

• To learn more about the Secondary School Vaccine Program, the vaccines, the diseases they protect against, or how you can prepare your child for vaccination, go to - https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/immunisation-in-secondary- schools

Students who missed school vaccinations in 2020

Some vaccines, due to students in 2020, were not delivered at the intended times due to school closures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic response in Victoria. Some students, now in [Year 8 and/or Year 11], may be due to complete their 2020 vaccine program this year to catch-up the missed vaccines Consent for these vaccines remains valid and you do not need to complete any additional forms.

Local council immunisation services will be relying on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to determine if your child is due for this vaccine and will not administer this vaccine if it has already been delivered by another immunisation provider, as recorded on AIR by the immunisation provider.

If you have had your child vaccinated elsewhere, you may wish to ensure that this is reflected on the Australian Immunisation Register. You can do this by contacting the immunisation provider and asking them to confirm that the vaccine was recorded on AIR.

You can contact the local council immunisation service on ph:8571 1477 to discuss any changes to your child’s health that you think might impact on their suitability to receive the vaccine or to withdraw your consent for vaccination at any time prior to vaccination day.

We will let you know when the CITY OF GREATER DANDENONG immunisation service will be visiting the school to provide the due vaccine and what you can do to prepare your child for vaccination.
