Princeton Review again ranks UNT “Best in the West”

DENTON (UNT), Texas ⎯ The University of North Texas, the largest, most comprehensive university in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, is one of the best colleges in the West, according to The Princeton Review, a nationally known education services company.

The Princeton Review selected UNT as one of 122 institutions in its "Best in the West" section of its website feature, 2013 Best Colleges: Region by Region.

For five consecutive years the university has been recognized by the influential Princeton Review, which is best known for providing test-prep courses, tutoring, books, and other student resources.

“UNT’s goal is to provide the best undergraduate education in Texas, and the continued recognition of excellence by outside organizations such as the Princeton Review is a gratifying affirmation of our efforts,” said Troy Johnson, vice provost and associate vice president for enrollment management.

"We're pleased to recommend the University of North Texas to users of our site as one of the best schools to earn their undergrad degree, said Robert Franek, Princeton Review’s senior VP/ publishing. “We chose it and the other terrific institutions we name as 'regional best' colleges mainly for their excellent academic programs. We also take into account what students at the schools reported to us about their campus experiences at them on our 80-question student survey for this project.”

The schools are also rated in six categories—academics, admissions selectivity, financial aid, fire safety, quality of life, and green.

“Students say UNT offers ‘the cream of the crop, dynamic, and nationally renowned programs,”’ reported The Princeton Review.

The 122 colleges that The Princeton Review chose for its "Best in the West" list are located in 15 states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

In July 2002, UNT and UAEM representatives signed an agreement to collaborate

on the academic training of students from both institutions and in research projects in

materials science, environmental science, physics and related fields. The agreement also

called for both universities to establish joint postgraduate degree programs in materials

science, environmental science and physics. Supplementary agreements over the past 10

years expanded the research and degree programs to other academic disciplines.

The exhibition is free, and an opening reception will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 12

Plastic artist Leopoldo Flores reflects with his work (mostly of large formats), social

problems and human nature. In 2008, the Global Foundation awarded him the Excelsis

prize, and the UAEM gave him an honorary doctorate for his career as an artist. Recently,

his exhibitions ‘El sexto dia’ and ‘Apuntes de Taller’ were opened in the museum

‘Leopoldo Lopez’ with drawings, and he began to work with acrylic on canvas, from the

series entitled ‘La gran parvada’.

Mystified by acrylic paintings, Agapito Rincon Pina reflects a regionalist sense on his

work, without theoretical complications and with interpretations of nature and light. The

exhibition consists of 24 prints that are part of the Cultural Heritage of UAEM, which is the

second time after his death that his collection will be displayed outside of Mexico. (See

Armando Pineda is a painter and sculptor who has exhibited work individually and

collectively in Houses of Culture in States of Mexico and Michoacan. He was a guest of

the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, held in the

Dominican Republic and in Costa Rica. His works are characterized by the colors that he

applies to his paintings, emphasizing the roots and flavors that people live every day. His

exhibition is entitled ‘Raices’.

Two UNT Students named NextGen Leaders DENTON (UNT), Texas – The Next Generation (NextGen) Nonprofit Leaders Program, a national competition that provides scholarships to students conducting internships in the nonprofit sector, has listed two students from the University of North Texas to be recognized. Raven Dickerson and Sara Chavez will be recognized as NextGen Leaders by the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, and both will receive a $4,500 scholarship. Dickerson and Chavez are the 20th and 21st UNT students to receive this award, since the implementation of the program in 2007. Established in 1948, the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance is an organization of academic institutions, nonprofit organizations and professional associations designed to prepare college and university students for professional and leadership positions in the nonprofit industry. The Next Generation Nonprofit Leaders Program began in January 2007 when W.K. Kellogg Foundation granted $5 million to Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. The program has selected a total of 1,000 NextGen Leaders that have received scholarships and access to mentoring and support from a network of nonprofit leaders. Dickerson, a 2009 graduate of Lake Dallas High School, is a senior majoring in social work. Chavez, a 2009 graduate of Yvonnne A. Ewell Townview Magnet, is a senior majoring in social work. Dickerson is the daughter of Robert Dickerson of Galena Park (Houston) and Chavez is the daughter of Alma Chavez of Dallas. “The Next Generation Nonprofit Leaders program is highly competitive, with students from up to 50 colleges and universities across the US competing for a very limited amount of awards,” said Rachel Reed, campus director of Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. “They are now part of an elite group to serve to their communities. They have brought recognition to our program, to the College of Public Affairs & Community Service (PACS) and to UNT through their receipt of this national award.” “These students have brought added distinction to themselves, to PACS, and to UNT by demonstrating that they are among the best and brightest undergraduates preparing to become first-rate administrators in the non-profit sector, working devotedly and efficiently toward social enhancement and remediation, stated Dr. James Duban, director of Office for Nationally Competitive Scholarships.

Dickerson and Chavez are among 46 college students selected from more than 50 college campuses in the United States, four of whom are from Texas. Their $4,500 scholarships will cover their expenses as they complete an internship with a nonprofit organization this fall. Nonprofit Leadership Alliance also provides certification in nonprofit management and leadership, which Dickerson and Chavez are both working to complete. The certificate program, which includes courses in fundraising, volunteer management and other skills needed in nonprofit management, is administrated at UNT in the College of Public Affairs and Community Service. Once Dickerson and Chavez complete their respective internships and academic and co-curricular requirements, they will be awarded the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance certificate. Dickerson is currently interning at Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home, a strength focused agency that protects children and teens. Chavez has not chosen a place for her internship, which she will begin in the spring.
