Preface
Among all areas of Mathematics, Algebra is one of the best suited to find applications within the frame of our booming technological society. In spite of this potential, algebraists have barely scratched the surface while considering the uses and applications of their discipline. The International Conference on Algebra and its Applications that was held in Athens, Ohio, March 1999, arose from our belief that much communication and interaction is needed to explore the wealth of applications that exist for Abstract Algebra in fields such as Information and Coding. We aimed at promoting a dialogue between those who craft the state-of-the-art in Algebra and those interested in solving problems where such state-of-the-art tools may turn out to be useful. Our goal was to gather in one place a wide range of mathematicians whose interests range from the theoretical aspects of Algebra to its uses and applications in tackling real-life problems. We were hoping to broaden the horizons of all participants by providing them with opportunities to be exposed to the kinds of talks that they normally would not have a chance to attend at a more narrowly focused event.
The conference attracted 135 participants from 26 countries; a total of 85 talks were delivered. We are convinced that the outcome of our experiment was very positive; during the conference we witnessed interesting exchanges among scholars who discovered that their respective areas were not as distant and unrelated as they might have originally thought. We are also aware of various fruitful collaborations that were ignited during the conference; we suspect that there are at this moment many other collaborations we do not even know about, as well as ideas that were planted in people's minds during the conference, that will eventually bear fruit.
It is now our continued hope that this volume will be, like the conference that preceded it, a source of inspiration for pure and applied research in Algebra. The volume consists of many exciting papers from distinguished authors in a wide range of topics. Just as it was the case with the conference that originated it, the volume tends to emphasize Ring Theory, Linear Algebra, and Coding Theory, a reflection of the editors' interests.
We would like to thank the National Security Agency and Ohio University for their support of the International Conference on Algebra and its Applications. We also wish to thank Christine M. Thivierge at the American Mathematical Society for her tireless and invaluable efforts to expedite the publication of this volume.

Algebra and Its Applications

Among all areas of mathematics, algebra is one of the best suited to find applications within the frame of our booming technological society. The thirty-eight articles in this volume encompass the proceedings of the International Conference on Algebra and Its Applications (Athens, OH, 1999), which explored the applications and interplay among the disciplines of ring theory, linear algebra, and coding theory. The presentations collected here reflect the dialogue between mathematicians involved in theoretical aspects of algebra and mathematicians involved in solving problems where

This Contemporary Mathematics series volume communicates the potential for collabo-ration among those interested in exploring the wealth of applications for abstract algebra in fields such ·as information and coding. The expository papers would serve well as supplemental reading in graduate seminars.
