This summer has been one of the busiestin the two decades since River Gardenrelocated to Mandarin. Our boards andstaff have been hard at work witharchitects, engineers and interiordesigners in preparation for theconstruction of a new 10,000 squarefoot addition to our 35-acre campus. Our new two-story pavilion will allow usto further expand our already successfulHome & Community Based programsand services. Along with the newbuilding, we will also refresh/modernize

our 20-year-old nursing facility. There is much activitysurrounding these projects, including a refinancing of existingcampus debt as well as an upcoming $7 Million CapitalCampaign. Once completed, these construction andmodernization projects will position River Garden at theforefront in meeting elder care needs in our community formany years to come. Additionally, we have been busyredesigning our website to be more interactive. Please visit thesite at www.rivergarden.org.

Earlier this spring, Florida Governor Charlie Crist’s “Panel onExcellence in Long-Term Care” unanimously recommended thatRiver Garden again receive the coveted “Gold Seal Award forExcellence in Long-Term Care.” This will mark the fifthconsecutive time River Garden has been so recognized by theGovernor, and we’re looking forward to a formal awardceremony this fall.

Our community mourns the passing earlier this spring ofMinnie Schreiber. Minnie was the Dean of the River GardenHebrew Home Board, chaired virtually every committee of theBoard, and also served as its President. Minnie loved, nurtured, and honored River Garden’s mission of service to the elderly. Shewas an inspirational leader and through her work she helped tomake our Home one of the finest care communities. Minniealso served as president of our Holding Company and played apivotal role as we evolved from a nursing home in Riverside intoa comprehensive system of elder care programs and services herein Mandarin. Just before Minnie died, she learned that she wasthe recipient of the Joe P. Safer Community Service Award, thehighest accolade our local Federation bestows upon a leader.Minnie was my dear friend and colleague and her memory willforever be a blessing.

My parents, Cecile and Donald Goetz, moved from SouthFlorida to The Coves nearly two years ago. My folks had lived inSouth Florida for 30 years but finally realized it was time tomove closer to their children, especially as my dad’s health beganto decline. What I had not considered in my parents’ move toJacksonville was just how much my family and I would enjoyhaving them around. My dad died on May 29 following a briefillness. During the 20 months that dad lived in our community,

he experienced everything that our campus has to offer. My dad’sscooter traversed the entire 35-acre campus. He swam in TheCoves indoor pool, volunteered as a Bingo caller on Fridayafternoons, chatted with Dr. Alvarez, kibitzed with staff, andswapped pharmacy stories (he was a retired pharmacist) with Dr.Kesgen. Dad sang with the Coves Choraleers, most recentlyportraying Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof.” None of these thingswould have been possible were it not for The Coves and itsability to offer high quality independent living to my parents. Ican’t say for sure that living at The Coves added years to myfather’s life. But I can say with absolute certainty that living atThe Coves added life to my dad’s years. His memory will foreverbe a blessing to our family.

physical, mental and spiritualby RabbiMarkWieder, Campus Chaplain

Meeting themany and varied needs of our residents at RiverGarden is a full-time concern, not only for ourmedical, socialwork and activities teams, but for a campus chaplain as well. Howdoes a rabbi encourage physical activity among residents?Primarily through singing, clapping and handmotions. We spendtime recalling songs, and learning newmelodies to prayers. Andfor those who aren’t Jewish, or familiar withHebrew, I make surethere are plenty of ya-la-la’s and simple chants. This also gives themind a workout, along with our other sessions, such as “TheBlessings of Our Lives,” “Jewish Stories,” and “Musings.”Thisyear many residents and a familymember participated in ourB’naiMitzvah program, an achievement that electrified ourentire community.

Addressing the spiritual needs of residents is by nomeans limitedto religious services. First, many residents are not Jewish, andsecond, not everyone who is Jewish has a background ofsynagogue attendance. This is why we offer Jewishmeditation, and why I encourage residents to offer the prayers of their hearts, not only those found in prayerbooks. These activities are but asmall part of the picture. The bigger part of my days and weeks is

spent one-on-one, counseling and encouraging our residents, members ofThe Coves, families and staff members, striving tomeet each person where and as they are.

CNAs Demonstrate Their Skills

River Garden’s Education Department, in collaborationwith the Nursing and Therapy Teams, hosted a CertifiedNursing Assistant Skills Fair in June. The three-dayeducational event for all CNAs was designed todemonstrate proficiency in skills that are critical to caringfor long-term care residents.

The skills fair served to reinforce the high standards of careexpected of River Garden staff and to provide anopportunity for questions. The goal was to ensure thatCNAs have the skills and tools needed to perform theirjobs safely--for the residents and for themselves.

Registered Nurse Managers and Physical Therapists servedas proctors and also role-played as residents as theyobserved, assessed and provided skills coaching as needed. The event helped to identify strengths and weaknesses inthe skill sets of all CNAs.

Despite the serious nature of the fair, there were humorousmoments as well. While staff members posing as residentsrelaxed in their beds, the CNAs made sure they werepositioned safely and comfortably. But one CNA was soproficient in her duties that a nurse actually did fall asleep!

At the end of the fair, everyone agreed that the 2010 CNASkills Fair was a rewarding educational experience thatreinforced competencies, offered individual education, andprovided a greater insight into the resident’s experience.

For more than 64 years, River Garden has been providing thehighest quality care for older people in our community. Oftenthat care extends to the end of life.

River Garden’s End-of-Life care enables families to be engagedin the care of their loved ones who are dying or who have aclinical diagnosis suggesting a poor prognosis. River Garden’sclinical team, under the direction of Drs. Edgar Alvarez andNonette Asistores, is fully capable of managing all aspects ofour residents’ needs when they are nearing the end of life.“This continuation of our already excellent care enables yourloved one to remain within the familiarity of their currentsetting and receive care from caregivers who already know theirneeds,” said a spokesperson.

We believe it is especially important for residents who havelived with us and who have formed relationships with ourcare staff to be able to continue to live in the comfort of theirown “home” here at River Garden. Staff members have beenspecially trained in River Garden’s End-of-Life care. Alsoavailable are the full resources of specialists from theUniversity of Florida College of Medicine as well ascommunity resources. River Garden takes pride in servingthe needs of all residents in order to help them live out theirlife with caring and dignity.
