Our vision is outward looking and our location places us equally within reach of Europe as to the rest of the UK and our learning opportunities reflect this. Our Gold International Schools Award represents the global context of our projects. Students and staff collaborate to plan, devise, deliver, evaluate and share events across Europe in person or virtually, connecting classrooms,

lives and experiences to offer citizenship experience and progression into the European Creative Market. Reflective practise develops respectful and tolerant critique amongst the students, celebrating social, moral, spiritual and cultural diversity through the Arts. “Students speak passionately about the activities they undertake outside of lessons and how these have developed their understanding of themselves and their roles as citizens or representatives of the community and school”, Ofsted 2015.

We are proud to offer specialist work placements at national centres such as The De La Warr Pavilion, Dove International, Modus PR, Rye Arts Festival and The White Rock. We collaborate with the Crafts Council, Artswork, British Council and more to position our learning in a national context. We work to create a legacy for the Arts in the UK as seen in ‘Our Future is in the Making’ Crafts Council manifesto, 2014. Partnership schools in Denmark, Spain and France offer extension to our learning with reciprocal visits and study trips broadening minds and horizons. Our delivery has been recognised by Lord Baker and David Harbourne of The Edge Foundation who visited Rye Studio, “The quality of work was outstanding, but what struck me most of all was a pervading sense of calm, creativity and self-assurance”

From September 2015 are introducing the UAL Art and Design Foundation Diploma with a retail context to further develop entrepreneurial and business acumen amongst our students. Students are able to study Fashion, Fine Art and Photography whilst selling their work, creating an online market and managing a retail premises to gain a personalised portfolio to access university or the business skills and understanding to set up their own creative business upon graduation.

In a competitive and uncertain world, young people need to think creatively, build resilience and be able to respond effectively to rapidly changing circumstances. “Students who have left the school, or who are about to do so, consistently move on to relevant further education, university, apprenticeships or suitable employment. The school equips them very well for their futures”, Ofsted. Our mission is to prepare young people for success in the twenty first century global, employment market with qualifications, confidence and creative, specialist skills.

Studying the AQA GCSE Core Science course gives students a rounded knowledge and understanding of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A broad range and variety of topics are covered, from drugs to metal extraction to generating electricity, all in fun, engaging and practical ways. At Rye Studio Science is studied by all students in Year 10 and 11 in a way suited to creative learners. When learning about the body’s defence system for example, students make themselves into pathogens and white blood cells and wage a war until the pathogens are engulfed or shot with antibodies in a wholly physical and dramatic exercise. The understanding gained is then represented in their folders in whichever way is most appropriate for each individual. Students use knowledge and understanding to pose scientific questions and define scientific problems, and plan and carry out investigations that will successfully produce data to respond to these questions. This prepares students to complete their practical coursework that comprises 25% of their GCSE. Science supports all other subjects, explaining common ideas and practices; for example a background understanding of colour and light will help students interested in photography and/or the production arts. For any student, a sound understanding of Science will help employers recognise desirable skills in them, including planning, organisation, questioning, predicting, contextualizing information, analysing results and gaining a deeper understanding of the way our world works. Projects are delivered in a cross curricular format and in partnership with Space Studio, London and Herstmonceaux Science Centre.

The Rye Studio curriculum is delivered via the project based learning teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to complex questions, real world problems or challenges. Project based learning covers course and subject content, is based in real life creative scenarios and drives independent learning at aspirational levels.

The schedule and timing of the projects develop and change according to our partners and examination timetables.

The creative industries inform and guide projects whilst delivery has been influenced by models of teaching at High Tech High, San Diego, the Buck Institute and the Innovation Unit. All projects work to industry briefs and our partner Arts organisations collaborate, inform and drive our projects. All stakeholders are invited to the public outcomes of the projects via exhibition, pop up shops, performance, film screenings in the local, national and international events. Presentations of Learning at the end of projects are shared with peers, staff, governors and invited guests.

The impact of project based learning have been high levels of engagement, independent and enquiring leaners, increased confidence, creativity, acquisition of deeper understanding of the creative industries and good or better progress. 100% pass rate at A level (with some students gaining 4 levels above target, ALPS).

Our unique and rich induction programme for key stage 5 students ensures that each student gains a deep understanding of all aspects of studio life and can contextualize their learning, for examinations and employment success, in the thriving world of the creative industries.

Rye Studio induction begins in partnership with the National Citizen Service. Our scheme allows young people to meet their peers and establish new establish new friendships while taking on new challenges and build skills for work and life. Year 12 students develop the tolls and belief to unlock their potential and make a positive impact in their community.

The National Citizen Scheme provides outdoor challenges on an exciting residential week away on the Isle of Wight where students begin to understand the value of team work and collaboration. Following on from the residential, the group joins with local businesses and social leaders to discover more about Rye and look at potential enterprising projects. Planning and research into social issue and charities inform a focus for the students who then use their creative and entrepreneurial skills to develop and deliver social action projects to either raise awareness of or raise funds for their chosen charity. The application of specialist skills in a fund raising context will start the business focus for all students over the following two years whilst developing leadership and collaborative skills, crucial for success in the creative industries.

Upon completion of the projects, students graduate at a formal ceremony with their family and friends to share the project outcomes and receive a certificate from the Prime Minster to add to their CV and celebrate their achievements.

NCS is delivered besides an induction into our Level 3 programme to enable year 12 to gain the skills and techniques that are transferable across the specialist subjects. A Level, Btec, Diploma and Arts Award workshops offer clear support in how to succeed in each of these specific areas. What will I study? The History of Art explores the dramatic ways in which works of art have been shaped by the shifting expectations and beliefs of artists and audiences over time. Though looking at, investigating and interpreting major works of painting, sculpture and architecture from a number of historical periods, you will build an understanding of how social structures such as political power, ethical beliefs, gender, technology and financial wealth have shaped the appearance of painting, sculpture, architecture and design in different European cultures from 500BCE to the end of the twentieth century. Although it’s an academic subject that can work very well alongside A

Level English, A Level History of Art also makes a perfect complement to studio-based work in art, textiles, photography, graphics or drama and theatre studies. You will learn to analyse historical and contemporary artworks and will be encouraged to develop your own skills of visual analysis and interpretation. Studying History of Art will enable you to place your own studio practice in a richer context of ideas and issues. There will also be many opportunities to use your understanding in the collaborative projects that are a feature of the Studio School curriculum. Taking advantage of the Rye

Studio’s proximity to London, we undertake regular trips to visit art museums, architecturally interesting buildings and relevant exhibitions in the capital. The course is assessed entirely by examination – two papers for the AS Level and two further papers for A2 Level. There is no coursework element in this qualification.

What could I do afterwards? This course can lead on to a university degree in Art History, or in one of the other professional areas that require specialist knowledge of visual culture, such as deign management, retailing or media communications. Students may progress to Foundation Arts Diploma to embed specialist arts experience before applying to an arts higher education course where the discussion and interpretation of visual culture will continue to feature as a central element of study.

Creative Teamwork: Leading Healthy LifestylesMystery and Imagination (Edexcel AS Exam Title: Unit 2 AS Art, Photography and Textiles 40% final grade) Students explored the examination title using the project theme, developing Mystery and Imagination into At what cost, immortality? – using the Healthy Lifestyles concept as a driving question. Students had to create a portfolio of work over 6 weeks to prepare for an 8 hour examination. Following the completion, they had to evaluate their work and prepare the work for exhibition and moderation by the exam board, Edexcel. To prepare the students for the life of a practicing artist, they then had to market their work in a shared exhibition; advertising, pricing, commissioning and creating a private view was part of the project. Creating an audience for their work, reviewing the show in local newspapers and online and paying commission to the school on their sales were all key elements of the project. Students held their exhibition in June, reviewed it to their peers and guests at a Presentation of Learning in July and received their public grades in August (100% pass, 65% A) Wellcome Trust, Saatchi Gallery, V&A GalleryArtist Steph Rubin

Student introductions to their projects:Reflecting on the title of Mystery and Imagination I immediately wanted to broaden and widen all possibilities of this starting point. So I embarked on a process of mind-mapping and brainstorming. I used virtual resources from the Internet such as TATE as well as traditional resources such as periodicals and books from the library. This process helped me to collect a wide range of visual ideas from across the world that helped me then think of several themes to explore further; these include ideas of contrasting themes such as science and nature, sanity and insanity, time and reflection, myth and legend. To refine my ideas I tried to develop an essential question that could guide the expansion of the title Mystery and Imagination. Another resource I used was the

TED talk when I looked at the inspirational speech by Aimee Mullins. The focus of Mullins’ talk was acceptance and I was inspired by her drive to change society’s perception of disability and beauty. Her story had already inspired Nick Knight and Alexander McQueen to work together in creating images and artefacts exploring form, function and beauty whilst Aimee was interested in how beauty and poetry combined with science and mechanics. From this I learnt that my project could follow ideas of health with art and how modern life is extending through science; I am really interested in the concept of how science is impacting on our mortality and that medical practice is changing our views. Possible paths forward were to look at conceptions and attitudes to disability and how this could be portrayed through photography – this could be in documentary evidence or subtly alluded to through atmosphere and subject matter, eg Tim Walker and Francesca Woodman

In response to the title ‘Mystery and Imagination’ I have brainstormed, mind mapped and researched ideas, themes and topics that could develop into possible projects. Initially when I began to expand the theme I looked at concepts of being human, the future and ideas of ethereal spaces, places and emotions to develop further pathways of exploration. I began to consider the concept of immortality and questioned whether this could be created or communicated through art.

ISABELLA WOODCOCK A Levels: Art, Photography, Textiles

I chose Rye Studio as it is unique and brand new, we could set the standards and be part of something potentially ground breaking which was exciting. I wanted to immerse myself in a completely creative environment where the people around me want to learn and achieve with high standards and ambition. The way of learning is tailored to suit you, as a creative and individual whilst prepared me for the business world and challenges you are faced with in the real world and working environment.

The work placements have given me the confidence to speak publicly and work with employers whilst gaining great communication skills, working as a committee

member for the Rye Arts festival to traveling to Modus, a fashion PR company in London. I also worked on set as an assistant for stylist Karena Callen for the Dove International Womens day campaign to training as a traditional milliner with Herald and Heart. All these opportunities gave me an insight into the real world of work and business, the process and journey behind the glitz and glamour of the fashion industry. These opportunities enhanced my learning at studio

school and educated me of the industry in which I aspire to be in as a designer.

My favourite moment at Rye Studio was our graduate exhibition and fashion show – seeing everything you and your friends have worked for over two years finally come together is such an amazing moment.

To progress my studies I am going to stay at Rye Studio and complete the Foundation Diploma to broaden my skills within the many genres of art. I am torn between going to university and starting my own business, so doing a foundation year is giving me that extra time of exploration and development that will inform my future decisions.

I would advise anyone who is unsure about whether to pursue a career in the creative industries to do what ever makes them most happy and what they enjoy because that’s what life is about.

I have gained experience of working independently, working as a leader and holding responsibility. My time management skills had always been a struggle until I learnt ways to organize myself. Rye Studio has helped me raise my aspirations and to reach my dream of going to Dance School.

The confidence I have gained from working closely with staff, feeling at ease to sit and talk with subject specialists or personal coaches has had a tremendous impact of my approach to life and career opportunities. Rye Studio is arty, weird, crazy- come and join the creativity!

THOMAS DUTTON A Levels: Art, Photography, Business Arts Award: GOLD My reasons for choosing Rye Studio came from my keen interest in developing my artistic skills in the arts subjects whilst working alongside professional practitioners. Rye Studio is different from other colleges as it encourages independence, the development of important life skills, having an artistic focus

and the encouragement into making contacts to further career opportunities.

I have worked at a boat building company located in Rye in which led me to incorporate design work with the making of objects and high-end luxury items for house hold furnishings. This placement benefited me through encouraging creativity whilst forcing my use of a new material to work with. I also gained an insight into the

start up of a small business and the importance of marketing. Another placement included work at the Rare Breeds Farm. This was work in the gallery assisting the

service users with their artwork creations. The valuable skills learnt involved building my social skills and learning to work with people with varied disabilities.

My favourite moment at Rye Studio would have to be the final exhibition where all my artwork and photography work got exhibited. For the public to be able to see the work created by the student at the Studio School it was a proud moment for all.

After graduating, I will be heading off to begin a degree at Falmouth University to study Marine and Natural History Photography.

The advice to other creatives is to be focused, because as long as you persevere and try your hardest, as the rewards in succeeding are well worth the effort.

CHLOE FIELD A Levels: Photography, Art, GraphicsBTEC: Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Arts Award: GOLD Rye Studio is inspirational in its ethos to explore many different specialisms, take big risks, make connections for the future and discover more about the

creative industries. The structure of Rye Studio creates a friendly atmosphere with small classes and 1-2-1 coaching that is really supportive.

My first work placement developed my skills in delivering art activities and workshops for disabled adults within a local charity; this placement helped improve my confidence, communication and understanding of the challenges within society. I also got

the opportunity to work with photographer Adam Lawrence as part of Channel 4 television programme; 24 hours in A&E. This opportunity gave me an insight of industry style photography and technical elements that I apply within my own practice to develop my knowledge within the visual arts.

I intend on continuing at Rye Studio to develop my practical and theoretical skills further by studying a course that combines a mixture of disciplines within the Foundation Diploma. I look forward to exploring the creative industries along with the business structure to experience the industry as a practicing artist in education.

The creative industries are the fastest growing sector in the UK and I look forward to pursuing a career within the industry. One bit of advice I have been repeatedly told is the importance of networking and creating a book of contacts. Getting as much real work experience helps you to establish which areas you want to work in and enhances your CV for prospective employers.

In 2015 the Festival commissioned Rye Studio students to curate an exhibition for the programme, resulting in the exciting contemporary showcase, ‘Right Here Right

Now’. Year 12 students took the curators role and completed all elements of putting on a professional exhibition from selecting artists from across the country, organising insurance, designing the catalogue, transporting works to advertising and marketing and setting up the private view. The curators entered the professional art world and worked with contemporary artists including Chatal Joffe, Dave McKean and Andrez Jackowski and galleries including Victoria Miro, London. This thought provoking exhibition created an exceptional experience into the discreet roles within the world of Fine Art such as curator, exhibitions assistant, graphic designer and events manager and contributed to the gaining of Arts Award Gold for the participating students.

Rye Studio has the potential to connect with and act as expressions of, community aspiration in an almost unprecedented way. For us, our community connection lies at the heart of our ethos and mission.

Our Community is not just a geographical location but refers to our place in a global creative community and students benefit from a global citizenship education. Our students access a world of culture, collaboration, responsibility and learning benefitting from:

• Learning by meaning by being exciting, relevant, grounded in ‘real-life’ scenarios.

• Challenges misinformation and stereotyped views about Majority World countries, and allows young people to counter ignorance and intolerance.

• Acknowledges that we have power as individuals: each of can change things, and each of us has choices about how we behave.

But this power can be even greater when we work collectively.

• Demonstrates how the real world we live in is unfair and unequal, but promotes challenging and changing this.

• Encourages us to recognise our responsibilities towards each other, and learn from each other.
