Holidays by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The holiest of all holidays are thoseKept by ourselves in silence and apart; The secret anniversaries of the heart,When the full river of feeling overflows,The happy days unclouded to their close,The sudden joys that out of darkness startAs flames from ashes; swift desires that dartLike swallows singing down Each wind that blows!White as the gleam of a receding sail,White as a cloud that floats and fades in air,White as the whitest lily on a stream,These tender memories are a fairy taleOf some enchanted land we know not where,But lovely as a landscape in a dream .

Do you remember the time when most people wore a hat or a cap? Not all the time, but often . Many men usually had something on their heads . For most it was a flat cap. Others were official, like police helmets or peaked caps . Some men wore bowler hats, and trilbies were common .

Women wore hats to church, at functions, and at the races . Wedding hats are making a comeback, and many grooms now have a top hat .

In the summertime, what can be nicer than a straw hat or a Panama hat to shade from the sun? Go ahead – try on a hat!

What is the first thing you do on holiday? Is it going straight to the beach? Or maybe taking a relaxing stroll? Or enjoying an evening’s entertainment? Or do you start worrying about sending postcards?

There are times when half the holiday seems to be taken up with postcards . Which one to choose – there are often

so many . Then who to send them to . And then the biggest problem of all: what to write? How many of us have fallen back on ‘wish you were here’?

But, what a pleasure it is to receive postcards from family and friends . A postcard through the letter box certainly brightens up the day .

There is so much to enjoy at the seaside in the summer months . The golden sands and the lapping waves are enticing . But so, too, are the rocky shores .

Rock pools are a world of their own . Twice a day the tide comes in and covers the rocky shore . Then the tide ebbs and leaves the rock pools as havens of life . They are a colourful world to explore .

There are crabs and sea snails . The sides are covered in limpets, whelks and winkles . And you might find sea anemones, sea urchins and starfish. You might even spot a shrimp or a lobster scuttling about .

Holidays AbroadThere was once a time when holidays were limited to a week at a seaside resort, or a few days in a boarding house . Then people became more adventurous . Some started to tour Europe . They took the caravan or went camping . People discovered the delights of the Dordogne in France or the picturesque villages of the Black Forest . Others went to Italy, taking in the splendours of Venice, Florence and Rome .

At the same time, air travel opened up the world . Package holidays to Spain made holidays abroad affordable. The Costa del Sol attracted millions of holidaymakers . It offered sunshine and blue seas. Soon people were relaxing in Majorca or the Canaries .

Brenda and Brian recall their holidays abroad“Our honeymoon was four days in Scarborough . Holidays were spent in Cornwall or North Wales . When the children came along, we enjoyed a week at Butlin’s in Minehead .

“Then, we saw an advert for a package holiday to Ibiza . We’d never done anything like that . It was wonderful . Everything was included so there was nothing to worry about . There was a pool at the hotel, and it was glorious sunshine all week . The children loved it .

“Later Brian read about Euro Camping . We had just got a new car . We stuck GB plates on it, and headed for Dover . Even the sail across the Channel seemed exciting . We drove right through France . The campsite was very well equipped . The children were a little older by then . They loved the freedom

and adventure . We found lovely little French towns, with sunny squares and pavement cafés .

“After the children were up and away, we had more freedom ourselves . We had weekends in Paris and Vienna . We discovered Tuscany too . And we had a glorious holiday on a Greek island .

“We’ve even taken to cruises . And last year we jetted all the way to New Zealand . There is just so much of the world to see and enjoy!”
