welcome...from the Academic Convenors:
Welcome to the seventh ECPR Summer School in Methods and Techniques! We are particularly happy to welcome you to Ljubljana, along with the Local Academic Coordinator, the local organising team and ECPR Central Services.
We would like to stress four points with regards to the spirit of this Summer School:
• First, it is meant to be a place of dialogue and fruitful discussion between disciplines and various fields of study: indeed, this Summer School gathers advanced students and junior researchers from various subfields of political science, as well as other disciplines.
• Second, and quite crucially, we have designed the programme in order to cover all stages of a research project and covering methods both at the macro and at the micro level, covering quantitative, comparative and qualitative designs. We have also designed a plenary programme (in particular the ‘Monday Mix’ and the poster session) in order to facilitate some cross-fertilisation across different methodological perspectives.
• Third, we hope there will be a lot of interaction during the courses and also outside of course hours. Naturally, your instructors and teaching assistants (if applicable) will be there to help. Experience also shows that much is to be gained by exchanging and sharing information between participants.
• Fourth, we very much want to take stock of this experience, to further improve this Summer School for its eighth edition in 2013, which is why every one of you will be asked to fill in an on-line evaluation questionnaire (more information will be given to you in due course). Be assured that we will do our best to take your viewpoint into consideration for 2013. We look forward to welcoming you again next year, with a still further enriched programme.
As you may guess, it is quite a challenge to organise such an event. We will do our very best, along with the Local Academic Coordinator, the local organising team as well as ECPR Central Services, to find practical solutions to queries and difficulties. If you encounter any difficulty, please report it to the person in charge so we can come up with solutions as soon as possible.
Finally, we would like to advise you of the second ECPR Winter School in Methods and Techniques (WSMT) at the University of Vienna, Austria from 17 to 22 February

2013. The Summer School and Winter School are designed to be fully complementary and to form the “ECPR Methods School”. We will provide more information at the “Welcome” plenary session on Sunday 29 July.
We wish you hard work, great intellectual and non-intellectual fun and lots of sun. We hope you will discover “the sunny side of methods”!
Bernhard Kittel and Benoît Rihoux, Academic Convenors
... from the Local Academic Coordinator
On behalf of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the whole Summer School organising team and myself, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you. Or, as we say in Slovene: “Dobrodošli v Ljubljani, dobrodošli na Fakulteti za družbene vede”!
This year we host our seventh ECPR Summer School in Methods and Techniques. We are pleased to have had the opportunity to contribute to the evident success of the first six, and we are looking forward to continuing our partnership with ECPR in the years to come. We very much hope that you will find the Faculty of Social Sciences a stimulating environment for great learning achievements, and at the same time a place to gain a valuable experience, both in social and cultural terms.
Allow me to use this opportunity to briefly introduce the University of Ljubljana and the Faculty of Social Sciences. The University is almost 100 years old and was established on educational tradition dating back to the 16th Century. It is an umbrella for 23 faculties and 3 art academies. There are approximately 50,000 students, enrolled in over 300 educational programmes. The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the oldest and largest members of the University of Ljubljana, with almost 4000 students, 13 undergraduate programmes and 23 graduate programmes in political science, sociology, communication and cultural studies. Within the Faculty, there are 22 research centres organised within the framework of the Social Sciences Research Institute, where almost 100 research projects are carried out annually.
In conclusion, we hope that this Summer School will be the most successful so far and that all participants will return home both scientifically and socially enriched.
Thank you for coming to Ljubljana and have a great time with us!
Professor Samo Kropivnik – Local Academic Coordinator

detailed class informationGeneral course information and obligations
• All participants are requested to attend all the course sessions in order to obtain certification. The instructors will circulate attendance forms at each course session.
• In the second week of the Summer School a compulsory online evaluation survey will be available (further information will be sent to your email address).
plenary programme and methodological cross-fertilisationThe academic coordination of this plenary programme is jointly ensured by Profs. Benoît Rihoux & Bernhard Kittel (Academic convenors) and by Prof. Samo Kropivnik (Local academic coordinator)
The purpose of the Summer School is not only to provide high-quality, interactive training on specific methods, it also provides a venue for methodological cross-fertilisation, where participants can open up their methodological perspectives. A series of additional events (including receptions, more on the socialising side) offer such opportunities. These activities are not conceived as a simple ‘side dish’ to the main courses – rather, they are very much linked to the courses and lie at the heart of the Summer School concept. These different types of events, in different formats, are designed to enable more interaction, as well as methodological debates.
Our goal is that instructors, teaching assistants and as many participants as possible have opportunities to engage in informal and open debates in a broader setting. For each event, we also outline the decisive “plusses” – each event, in a specific way, is an opportunity for you to seize.

1. Welcome plenary session
(Sunday 29 July 6pm to 8pm, Main Auditorium)
During this first session, each instructor gives a short presentation on the topic of his/her course. Thus, participants have the opportunity to get a grip on each one of the courses offered. This way, participants also know ‘who is who’, so they can possibly make appointments during the Summer School with other instructors apart from the instructor(s) of the course they are following.
[NB at this plenary session, a series of important practical instructions are also provided – it is therefore highly recommended that you attend]
This welcome plenary session is followed by a welcome barbecue.
The «plus» of this event: it gives you a first ‘appetiser’ with regards to each one of the courses offered – and also helps you to select the “Monday Mix” lectures you’d like to attend the next day. And if you prefer non-academic ‘appetisers’, you’ll get them at the barbecue.
2. The ‘Appetiser Monday Mix’
(Monday 30 July 9am to 5.30pm)
The first teaching day (Monday 30 July) is split into four, 90 minute time slots. During each of these slots, 4 instructors present the introductory lecture for their respective courses(*). Thus: each participant of a two-week full course(**) may attend lectures for up to 3 courses, in addition to the one he/she has registered for, providing insight into some other methodological perspectives and tools.
(*) NB : On Monday 30 July, the instructors of 2-week courses only teach for 90 minutes (i.e. their introductory lecture).
(**) Each participant of the one-week courses starting from week 1 has the possibility to attend one lecture at the Monday Mix, in addition to the course he/she has registered for (as his/her one-week course covers 2 other time slots). (See page 13 for more details)

This may encourage you to come again next year to attend another course, or to engage in further readings etc.
3. Finding secondary data for my research (Wednesday 1 August 6pm to 8pm, Main Auditorium)
Secondary data analysis saves time that would otherwise be spent collecting data and provides larger and higher-quality databases that would be unfeasible for any individual researcher to collect on their own. In addition, analysts of social and economic change consider secondary data essential, since it is impossible to conduct a new survey that can adequately capture past change and/or developments (Wikipedia, 2012).

Advantages and disadvantages of secondary analysis will be discussed. Emphasis will be given on data services that provide social science data. We will present several services, their main collections and access to data.
Speaker: Irena Vipavc Brvar, Slovene Social Science Data Archives
4. Poster session, ‘get back together’ reception and awards
(Sunday 5 August 6pm to 8pm, main hall of Faculty of Social Sciences)
The purpose of this poster session is to enable you to present your “work in progress” (typically, this would be a PhD research project, but it can also be an ongoing applied research project, etc), and to receive feedback from fellow participants. We invite you all to present your work at this session. It is up to you to choose how to set up the poster, e.g. in terms of relative emphasis on substantive, theoretical and methodological issues.
There will be no formal presentations, rather this session will take place during a ‘get back together’ reception after the weekend. This will enable informal interaction between the poster authors and the audience of participants, teaching assistants and instructors.
Practical Instructions:
• Participants who send their posters to Sabina Otonicar no later than 6pm on 23 July will have their posters printed in colour by the SSMT office (with costs covered). Later contributions are possible, but after the deadline participants will have to arrange printing and cover the costs themselves;
• The posters will be displayed in the main hall from Thursday 2 August onwards;
• On the day of the poster session, the SSMT office will make arrangements to display the posters in the main hall of the Faculty. Participants will be allocated space in order of arrival.
• The posters will remain on display for the second week of the full courses (6–10 August) and if they so wish, the authors of the posters will be able to collect them at the end of the SSMT.
SSMT Handbook 2012.indd 11 20/07/2012 10:48:03
12
ECPR SSMT 2012 Handbook
Procedure to allocate the “Best Poster Awards”:
• Each poster will be identified by a number;
• Each SSMT participant will be issued with a voting slip;
• Between Thursday 2 August (beginning of the display) and Sunday 5 August at 7pm (mid-way through the poster session and reception), each participant will have the possibility to (anonymously) cast his/her voting slip in a ballot box;
• Between 7pm and 8pm, the voting slips will be counted by a team of UL-based teaching assistants;
• At around 8pm (end of the poster session), the Best Poster Awards will be announced. The Dirk-Berg Schlosser Awards for best posters come with a first prize of €250, a second prize of €150 and a third prize of €100.
The «plus» of this event: if you have a project of your own, you have the unique opportunity to receive feedback, in an informal way, by any other participant, teaching assistant or instructor. You also have the opportunity to inform many people about your ongoing work. Finally, it also enables you, if you have not yet done so, to elaborate a first poster, which could be useful for other occasions (conferences etc.).
5. The ‘Dessert Monday Mix’
(Monday 6 August, 9am to10.30am & 2pm to 3.30pm)
On the first teaching day of the 1-week courses that take place during the second week (Monday 6 August), the first 90-minute lecture of these 5 courses is made accessible to other interested participants (same principle as the ‘Appetiser Monday Mix’). Thus:
• Each participant of a two-week full course has the possibility to attend one Dessert Monday Mix lecture (one lecture that takes place in the morning if his/her main course is scheduled in the afternoon, or one lecture that takes place in the afternoon if his/her main course is scheduled in the morning);
• Each participant of a one-week course (during week 2) also has the possibility
SSMT Handbook 2012.indd 12 20/07/2012 10:48:03
13
ECPR SSMT 2012 Handbook
to attend one Dessert Monday Mix lecture (one lecture that takes place in the morning if his/her main course is scheduled in the afternoon, or one lecture that takes place in the afternoon if his/her main course is scheduled in the morning);
• In addition, a participant that only took a one-week course during week 1, and who would still like to gain new insights, could stay until Monday 6 August and attend up to two Dessert Monday Mix lectures (one in the morning and one in the afternoon).
This is how the Dessert Monday Mix lectures are spread over two time slots:
Class 9am – 10.30am 2pm – 3.30pm
2 D4 Analysing Text, Sound and Image with NVivo
D3 Simultaneous Equation Models
3 D1 Analysing Discourse – Analysing Politics: Theories, Methods and Applications
D6 Content Analysis
6 D2 Missing Data
The «plus» of this event: this is quite a unique opportunity to attend (for free) a full introductory lecture on up to 3 other methodological topics, apart from the course you are following. This may encourage you to come again next year to attend another course, or to engage in further readings etc.
6. IBM SPSS as a social sciences data analyses tool
(Wednesday 8 August 6pm to 8pm, Main Auditorium)
The potential of IBM SPSS data management and analyses software package in the heterogeneous, vibrant and demanding social sciences research field will be demonstrated and discused. This is an opportunity to learn about the logic, the challenges and the vision behind this well know computer program from the first hand as well as discuss its benefits and downsides in comparison to other data analyses packages as you have experienced them. The presentation will be given by Miha Vogelnik, Valicon’s parter and regional SPSS representative, a recognized expert in data mining and social sciences data analyses.

7. …and your own cross-fertilisations, facilitated by Moodle and social networking tools
For the whole duration of the SSMT, some specific online collaborative tools will be made accessible to all participants, to facilitate contacts and various initiatives by the participants themselves. The Moodle platform (the SSMT e-learning platform used for the courses and plenary programme) will feature various tools and links which will enable you to network in many ways, following a “bottom-up” logic.
All the participants will be able to exploit these tools as they wish, to exchange experiences, launch discussion groups, forums, etc. This could also lead (if you find it useful), for instance, to ‘fringe meetings’ initiated by the participants themselves, along any topic (substantive, theoretical, methodological) – the SSMT office will be there to help for logistics, if needed.
Naturally you will also be able to use these tools for “non-academic” purposes (e.g. organise parties, weekend trips, get-togethers, social events, etc.). There will also be a University of Ljubljana student assistant specifically employed for the duration of the SSMT, to assist you in self-organising anything you wish.
Some of the tools, if useful, will remain active after the SSMT, for instance if some specific groups want to pursue interactions etc.
The «plus»: this will enable you to ‘self-organise’ as you wish and to take part in any network or initiative you want to join.
local information
Local transport
The most efficient public transport in Ljubljana is the city bus system. City buses have an electronic payment system based on a no-contact smart card called Urbana. Urbana cards are electronic ticket carriers. A single journey fare is €1.20 and it covers an up to 90-minute journey regardless of the number of buses needed to be changed to reach the destination.

the city of ljubljanaIn Ljubljana you will feel a mixture of the Slavic charm and sincerity, as well as the Mediterranean temperament and a touch of Nordic reserve. You will also be able to enjoy the architecture, its museums, archaeological sites, monuments, many theatres and one of the oldest philharmonic orchestras in the world.
The city’s increasingly vibrant commercial and trading life and rapid increase of foreign diplomatic representatives are giving it an ever greater cosmopolitan touch. Ljubljana offers a wide variety of cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants. Relief from the hustle and bustle of life in the capital can be found in the many parks and woodland areas, which in some places extend almost right into the city centre.
The branches of the city park willow trees almost spill into the green coloured river Ljubljanica in the old town quarter and not very far away in the very centre behind the Town Hall rise the wooded slopes of Castle Hill. The castle itself is the main place of pilgrimage, and whoever leaves the city without going there has not really seen Ljubljana. The municipality Ljubljana connected Ljubljana Castle with the old city core at the end of 2006 by an urban means of transport – a funicular railway.
From Ljubljana people go skiing in Kranjska Gora, horseback riding in Lipica, for a coffee in Trieste, and a little further for cappuccino and exhibitions in Venice. Nowhere is more than a two-hour drive away.
The most popular events during the summer in Ljubljana are:
Festival Ljubljana: The Ljubljana Summer Festival is held between July and August. It attracts notable opera stars, ballet and theatre performers and also eminent international rock and jazz musicians. Further information can be found at: www.ljubljanafestival.si/en
Metelkova Mesto (Metelkova City): Metelkova is an internationally renowned alternative community culture in the centre of Ljubljana, that often draws comparisons to Copenhagen’s Kristiania. A self-declared ‘Autonomous Culture Zone’ consists of seven buildings and 12,500m2 - making it a sort of city within a city - comprising a former prison (now Celica Hostel), several clubs, live music spaces, art galleries and artist studios. Dedicated to organising social and cultural activities for the public, Metelkova has a nonstop events schedule and is arguably the best after-dark destination in Lubljana for those looking to experience something wholly unique and unpredictable. Further information can be found at: www.metelkova.org

Trnfest: The TRNFEST Festival is one of Ljubljana’s most popular cultural and social events on the summer calendar. All outdoor events are free of charge. Further information can be found at: www.visitljubljana.si/en/events/23413/detail.html
Open air theatre: Every summer there is an open air theatre in Ljubljana’s castle. You can bring your own drinks and food. Tickets can be bought in the castle every day one hour before the start of the movie and from then on. Tickets cost around €4. Further information can be found at: www.kinodvor.org/kinodruzenja-in-festivali/film-pod-zvezdami/
Guided tours of Ljubljana
Ljubljana, especially its old city centre, is renowned for its unique architectural appearance, which is due to the picturesque combination of the legacy of the Roman era, Baroque and Art Nouveau masterpieces, and a unique and original character given to the city by the famous European architect Jože Plečnik, a native of Ljubljana, in the first half of the 20th Century. Guided sightseeing tours of the city are organised by the Ljubljana Tourist Board.

2nd ECPR Winter School in Methods and Techniques
University of Vienna, Austria, 17 – 22 February 2013
The ECPR Winter School in Methods and Techniques (WSMT) is an annual event, complementary to the ECPR Summer School in Methods and Techniques (SSMT), and for the same public of advanced students and junior researchers in political science and adjacent disciplines.
Integrated with the SSMT, The WSMT features both introductory courses and more advanced courses, in a one-week course format, while the intermediate-level courses will continue to be held at the SSMT in Ljubljana, in a two-week course format for quantitative techniques and two consecutive one week courses for qualitative techniques.

41st ECPR Joint Sessions of Workshops
Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz, Germany, 11 – 16 March 2013
Workshops are designed to be a forum for substantive discussion on research in progress and collaboration among scholars and are gatherings of approximately 15 to 20 participants from several institutions, lasting about 5 days. The topics of discussion are precisely defined, and only those scholars currently working in the workshop’s field are accepted to participate.
The main aim of the workshops is the participation and equality of endeavour between advanced students, younger and newer members of the profession and well-established professors. Each participant is expected to be carrying out research in the field of the workshop, so that he or she can present a paper or research document for discussion, as well as take part in the discussion of the other papers presented. Participants may attend only one workshop and should stay for the duration of the Joint Sessions. It is hoped that some of these workshops will lead to publications and the creation of permanent Standing Groups, as well as to continuing collaboration between members.
7th ECPR General Conference
Sciences Po Bordeaux, France, 5 – 7 September 2013
The academic programme takes the standard conference format of sections, which have within them between 4 and 10 panels. These sections are organised around a common theme and major research questions.
The traditional conference format provides the opportunity to present recent research to an audience in order to expose it to the criticism, suggestions, and support of peers. The purpose of the conference is to further scientific discussion and research across all national scientific communities and across all areas of political science. In addition to sections and panels, there are round tables, a plenary lecture and an interesting social programme.
A call for panel proposals will be announced in August 2012.

5th ECPR Graduate Conference
Innsbruck, Austria, 3 – 5 July 2014
The academic programme takes the standard conference format of sections, which have within them between 4 and 10 panels. These sections are organised around a common theme and major research questions. Sections provide the opportunity to present research to a large audience and to expose it to the criticism, suggestions, and support of peers.
In addition to sections and panels, there are round tables, a plenary lecture and an interesting social and networking programme. This is an excellent opportunity for graduate students to come together from all over Europe to share their work and experience by presenting papers or by simply observing.
A call for Panels and Papers will be announced in June 2013.
3rd Research Sessions
Florence, summer 2013 (dates to be confirmed)
The ECPR’s Research Sessions can be seen as a ‘mini Joint Sessions’ where established or newly formed groups of around eight researchers can come together to discuss a project at any stage.
Funding
In order to help individuals participate in all of the above events, the ECPR offers a number of funds and scholarships to scholars in all stages of their careers.
Every year the ECPR awards approximately 150 grants to individuals who belong to member institutions; this funding alone is a key benefit of membership of the ECPR.
Funding is available for most of our events – for more information please see our website www.ecprnet.eu.
