sides receiving infor-mative facts on Ha-

tertained by “Hula Lady” Joan with some
well performed Ha-waiian dances. Thank
you, Joan, for a most pleasant

“Disability Agencies,”
with the upcoming-themes “Tax Infor-
mation” and Addition to the Hospital” sure
to be informative and enlightening.
February is the month with two
important club pro-jects.
Firstly, there is the “Kiwanis Blood
Drive” for the Red Cross on Feb. 23rd
from noon to 6 p.m.
at St. Anthony’s Church Hall, chaired
by Christina Boyer. Christina cannot run
this event alone. She needs helpers for
unloading and load-ing, for manning the
Canteen and for pro-viding some sweets
and/or snacks. Vol-unteers, please sign-
up!
A Message from
the President
Fellow Kiwanians,
Time goes by quickly! The New
Year has started and you will have made
your resolutions for this year. I hope that
one of these resolu-tions is, to bring a
new member to our Kiwanis club.
In this re-spect, we have done
well with the start of
the year; and we can welcome our New
Members: Tim Groves with a Corpo-
rate Membership from Coldwell
Banker, Theresa and Tim Walker, and Jen-
nifer Rogers and Aly-cia Edison. As al-
ways, Joan and Bill VanArsdalen gave
them a thorough ori-entation, and we
were happy to induct
all five as new Ki-wanians” on January
24th. During our
interesting January programs, we
learned what two Hillsdale High School
juniors had experi-enced at the one
Secondly, we will have one of our
main fundraising events, the 18th An-
nual Chili Cook-Off, Arts and Craft Show
and Silent Auction on February 25th at
the High School Gym-nasium. Many letters
have already been distributed to poten-
tial cooks and craf-ters, and I hope that
we will get a record participation. I am
please that some
members have al-ready committed to
head committees for various tasks, for
which I thank you. However, we need
many more hands to help with the entrance
table, the concessions booth and the settin-
gup and controlling of the Silent Auction
booth. It is not neces-sary to explain that
Dave and Charley
need strong people to set-up in the gymna-
sium on Friday and clear up on Saturday.
An important pre-event task is the
collection of donated items for the Silent
Auction. Although the

K-Kids Charter
The K-Kids of Bailey Elementary School received their official charter on Thurs-
day, Dec. 15. Twenty-one members and their families were present to officially
charter the K-Kids club, with a total of 52 members in all. The children received
A pin and certificate as well as the official K-Kids Banner, to be displayed in the
school. The K=Kids Club now completes all levels of Kiwanis leadership clubs.
The goals of K-Kids are to promote leadership opportunities, service, and to
learn to work together in a way that enables growth for the children of the Hills-dale Community. The members participated in bell ringing for the Salvation
Army in December. They plan to have a “Hat Day” at Bailey to raise money for
the Hillsdale Humane Society. The members also voted to help with doll making
for Motts Children’s Hospital and continue to collect Box Tops for Education, to
help with updating and purchasing educational equipment for the school.
Emma Brown is 18 years old and a senior at Hillsdale High School She enjoys participating in the school
musical every year during the Artrageous Festival and also being in the annual collage concert every De-
cember. She performed in the Hillsdale Arts Chorale’s Fall concert and is a member of the high school
choir. Emma also leads the Girl’s Bible Study this year, a study on Hannah, and very much enjoys Wednes-
day luncheons when they meet.
One thing that’s always been of interest to her is singing. She said, “I discovered my passion for vocal
performance, and singing in general, early on, and enjoy learning different songs of different genres and
various languages. Through the years I’ve also discovered English to be particularly appealing;. I enjoy
writing and challenging myself to think on a deeper level in AP English.”
One of her goals for the future is to graduate and further her education by going to college. She plans to
major in communications and minor in vocal performance. As of now she plans on going into journalism so
she can write for a newspaper or a magazine.
Emma said, “Also, whenever God sees fit, I would like to get married and have a family. My main goal for
the future though, is to just follow God’s plan for my life and whatever that may entail.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH —January— Emma line Brown
STUDENT OF THE MONTH —
January—Brock Eves
‘I would like to thank the Kiwanis for
recognizing my hard work as a mid-
dle school student and for having me
here on this fine afternoon. My name
is Brock Eves and I am an 8th grader
at Davis Middle School.
‘I have been presented with many
great opportunities at Hillsdale
Schools, one of those being running.
Way back in 6th grade, I started run-
ning with the high school cross coun-
try team. It was one of the best things
I did. I have learned so much from
it—dedication, hard work, setting
demanding goals, leadership, that just
being a few things.
― I have had the chance to compete n
many meets around the league and
large meets such as Portage with 579
competitors where I took 4th place. I
would like thank my coach Mr. Pas-
tula and my teammates. They have
played an important role in my life. I
also play basketball and run track.
More importantly Hillsdale Schools
has presented me with opportunities
to take advanced classes. I am taking
Algebra, Earth Science and English
9 , which are all freshman classes.
I’m taking advantage of having these
classes.
―It sure is not easy and I couldn’t do
it without the help of my mom, dad,
along with my grandpa and grandma,
and I can’t forget the teachers and
staff at Hillsdale Schools. They have
helped me get through tough times
and getting where I am today.
My future goals are to run cross
country at the college level, while
preparing for a career that would take
me to the wilderness in Alaska.
lists with contact companies and persons have already been given
to individual members, we need you to approach more firms.
Please volunteer to collect donations, as the Silent Auction raises a
lot of income at this event. You do not need to be a “high power
sales person”. If you tell prospective donors the reason and give
them the prepared letter of request, 99 percent will support our
cause to “Help the Children of the World and, particularly, the Chil-
dren of Hillsdale County.
I am sure that everyone will make an effort to get in-
volved in the 2012 Chili Cook-Off which is a significant annual event.
As you all know, on this occasion we not only raise funds for help-
ing children, but we also have a good opportunity to expose our
Kiwanis Club community service activities here in Hillsdale.
Thank you for your support of our focus on Helping one child and one community at a time!
Sincerely,
Karl
In addition to that,
the project also distributes
100 Spanish-English diction-
aries to all the students of
Spanish at Hillsdale High ,
and 30 French-English dic-
tionaries to all the students
studying French at Hillsdale
Academy. This program is
one of the farthest-reaching
of the projects that we do,
as it touches not just every
student within Hillsdale
County, but also their sib-
lings and their entire house-
The Kiwanis Club of
Hillsdale participated in the
Dictionary Project for the
8th year now. Members of
the club along with Hillsdale
College Circle K, who also
plated each dictionary and
thesaurus, and members of
Eta Sigma Phi, the national
Classics honorary society,
under took to distribute over
500 dictionaries to all 3rd-
graders and 500 thesau-
ruses to all the 7th graders
in the county.
hold. Such an impact could
not be possible without the
tremendous amount of help
from the membership of the
Kiwanis Club and Hillsdale
College Circle K. Many thanks
to all who have distributed
books throughout the
county, and if you have any
photographs of your distri-
bution, please bring in a copy
to share with the club and to
put in our scrapbook.
