The Burren - Land of the Fertile Rock
Fáilte go dtí An Bhoireann – Welcome to the Burren
Your Burren Passport will give you a taste of the history, local culture and
traditions in the Burren, as well as comprehensive listings on what to do, eat,
drink and details of the many cultural festivals, events, live music sessions in
the 20 towns and villages that make up this special karst region of North Clare
and South Galway.
From the traditional music events in spring and the Burren in Bloom
festival in May, to the Summer events like Cruinniú n mBád (the gathering of
the boats) in Kinvara as well as weekly teach cheoil traditional Irish concerts
in Ennistimon and Corrofin, and even winter events such as the Russell music
weekend in Doolin, and the Ballyvaghan and Kinvara Christmas markets,
the Burren is a place that is as beautiful and lively in winter as it is in spring,
summer or autumn.
The Burren has an extensive and varied selection of accommodation,
including family-run bed and breakfasts where one can get a real taste of
home cooking and inside information on the local culture and traditions
of the area. Hotels, guest houses, self-catering accommodation, as well as
quality hostels, caravan and camping sites ensure all types of traveller are
catered for.
The great variety of places to eat and drink, from traditional pub food
to restaurants and cafés, over 20 visitor attractions, spectacular scenery,
beautiful beaches, outdoor activities to suit all capabilities, as well as an
abundance of archaeological and historical sites of interest, will ensure that
your visit to the Burren is as action-packed or as relaxing as you choose.

also help to protect this special environment, as well as contribute to the
economic and social development of the people and cultures of the Burren.

meltedawaytheyleftbehindlargeboulders
onthesurfaceofthelimestonecallederratics.
Undergrounddissolutionbythemeltingicewateralsocreated
manycaves,afeaturewhichmakestheBurrenapopularplacefor
subterraneanexplorerscalledspeleologists.

340-317millionyearsagoduringtheCarboniferousPeriodinEarth
History,theBurrenformedthefloorofashallowtropicalsea,muchlike
themodern-dayCaribbean.
Thewarm,shallowtropicalseassupportedaprolificanddiverse
rangeofmarinelife,includingcoralsandmanytypesofshellfish.When
thedeadbodiesofthemarine
lifedecayed,theycreateda
limeymud.Overtimeand
withdeeperburialthelimey
mudcompactedtoformthe
limestonerockwhichforms
thepresentdayBurrenregion.
Limestonehasaspecial
relationshipwithwater;it
willdissolveveryslowlyinthepresenceofmildlyacidicrainwaterand
meltingice.Whenthishappenstoalargeexposedareaoflimestone
whatemergesiscalledakarstgeologicalregion.Whenbarelimestone
mountainsandhillsbecomeexposedtowind,rainandicetheybecome
‘karstified’.
Aftermillionsofyears,thelimestonebedswerepulledupwardsand
exposedattheEarth’ssurfacetoformmountains.Thelandscapeof

Discoveredin1952,theGreatStalactiteatPolnaIonain,knowntoday
asDoolinCave(seepage38foropeningtimes),measures6.54metres
(20feet)inlength.Itisnowrecognisedasbeingthelongeststalactite
inEurope.

ThebarelimestonerockpavementoftheBurrenisdissectedby“clint
andgrike”structures.Thegrikes,formedbywaterdissolvingaway
limestonealongjoints,aretheverticalfissuresseenrunningthrough
thesolidlimestone.Theclintsarethelimestoneblockssurrounded
bythesefissures.ThislimestonepavementisprotectedbyEuropean
legislationbecauseofit’sinternationalimportanceand,liketherare
flowers,itisimportantthatitisnotdisturbedordamaged.
Magical disappearing lakes
ThedisappearinglakesoftheBurrenarecalledturloughs.Theseare
seasonallydrylakesthatforminhollowsinthelimestone.Theyfill
anddrainwithwaterthroughaseriesofholesandcracksinthefloor
oftheturloughwhicharelinkedtocavesystems.Someoftheselakes
canfillveryquicklyandtheycanbeobservedtoshrinkandswellina
matterofhours.
The longest cave system in Ireland
AcaveintheBurrencalledPoulnagollumisIreland’slongestcave.
Itrunsforover15kmandis140metersdeep.Itcanbefoundonthe
easternslopesofSlieveElvamountain,nearthetownofLisdoonvarna.

Afterthisboomtimeinthe
FinalNeolithic/EarlyBronze
Age,thepopulationfocusmay

TheBurrenwasnotcompletely
abandonedhowever,and
spectacularfindssuchasthelargegoldGleninsheengorgetarea
testamenttothesignificantactivityontheBurrenintheBronzeAge
(1500-600BC).
PollenevidenceforaregenerationoftreesontheBurrenduring
thesubsequentIronAge(600BC-400AD)indicatesanevengreater
drop-offinfarmingandpopulationthatlasteduntiltheEarly
Medievalperiod(400-1300AD),whenthetreeswerere-clearedand
thepopulationoftheBurrenincreasedonceagain.

Itisbelievedthatthefirstfull-timeinhabitantsoftheBurrenwere
farmerswhoarrivedaround3800BC.Themostvisibleremainsoftheir
formerpresencearethemegalithictombstheybuilt,suchastheportal
tombatPoulnabrone.
ThroughouttheeraknownastheNeolithicperiod(c.4000-2400BC),
thesefarmersraisedtheirherdsonthegentlesouthernslopesofthe
Burren.TheBurrenwasgoodtothem,butwehaveevidence,including
large-scaletreeclearance,that
bytheendoftheNeolithic
periodandintotheEarlyBronze
Age(c.2400-2000BC),an
increasingpopulationmayhave
putconsiderablepressureonthe
Burren’sresources.
TheBurrencontainseighty
wedgetombs(allofwhichdate
tothisperiod)andrepresents
thedensestconcentrationofthis
typeofmegalithictombinIreland(wedgetombswerethelasttypeof
megalithictombtobebuilt).TheuniqueenvironmentoftheBurrenhas
alsoensuredthatthemuchmoreephemeralremainsofthesepeoples’

Solitary,austere,andyetstrangelybeautiful,

comealive.Itisafertile,fragile,plant-rich
andsensitivelandscape.Ofallthenatural
historyintereststhatareintermingledand
interdependentonthislimestoneplateau,it
isperhapstheplantsandflowerswhichhave
caughtthepublicimaginationmost.
ThetotalfloraoftheBurrenissorichit
constitutesaboutthreequartersofthefloraof
Ireland.Howeverthelackofbotanicaltraining
doesnotdetractfromthesheerjoyofrelishing
theeternalrhythmoftheever-changingfloral
seasonsinthisrichlandscape.
ThemystiqueoftheBurrenfloralaysnotsomuchinthefrequency
ofrarespecies,butintheassemblageorco-habitationofcertainplants
andtheBurrenlocationstheychoose.Theseuniquecircumstances
prevailingintheBurrenaremoststrikinglydemonstratedbythe
simultaneousoccurrenceoftheMediterraneanorchidNeotinea
intacta(theIrishOrchid)andthearcticalpinespecies Dryas octopetala

Ofthemanybirdspeciesfound
intheBurrenperhapstheskylarkcan

Woodmiceandred
squirrelsareverycommoninhazelwoodland.Othermammalsfound
intheBurrenincludethebadgerandthestoat.
Overseventyspeciesoflandsnailshavebeenrecordedinthearea,
thankstotheabundanceofshell-buildingcalciumcarbonate.
TenofIreland’snativebatspeciesarefoundintheBurren.

OneuniquesurvivingfeatureofBurrenfarmingisthetradition
ofwinterage.Thissysteminvolvesherdingcattleontothewarm,dry

anditspeopleseemtoallowforthe
artisttoliveanartisticlifemoretruly
inandthroughhimself.Butthisis
notjustrecent.Inthe13thcentury
thefamousO’Dalyfamilyofpoets
conductedabardic(poetic)school

obelisk-likemonumenttothem
onthesouthsideoftheseashore).

Asinexplicable,exoticandunchangedinmostwaysasthe
Burrenremainsasalandscape,ithasalwaysprovidedfordiverseand

barrennessorthecompanyandabundanceofitsdesert-likelandscape
theirinspiration,itseemsinevitablethatartistsofalldisciplines,
especiallyvisualartists,writers,craftworkers,andmusicianscontinue
tobedrawntotheBurren.

LoughBunny,acalcareouslakeof480acresandoneofthedeepestintheBurren.Itcontainsawidevarietyofwildfowlandplants.Turloughmoreissituatedabout2milesfromBostonChurch,andwasfamousforitsracecourseandfairdayinthe18thcentury.TheruinsofCluainDubháin,orBoston,CastleandSkaghardCastleareclosetothevillage.Today,theruinsofthecastlesareareminderofthepastsiegesenduredbyitspreviousoccupants.
