SUCCESS, GRADES, RETENTION, AND GRADUATION THE ROLE OF ASSESSMENT OF INTRAPERSONAL AND INTERPERSONAL COMPETENCIES (2017)2 Researchers identify three competencies most frequently showed evidence of supporting students' college persistence and success, as measured by grades, retention and graduation: A sense of belonging, a growth mindset and personal goals and values. Educational Attainment—the number of years a person spends in school—strongly predicts adult earnings, as well as health and civic engagement. Yet relative to other developed nations, educational attainment in the United States is lagging, with young Americans who heretofore led the world in completing postsecondary degrees now falling behind their global peers. As part of a broader national college completion agenda aimed at increasing college graduation rates, higher education researchers and policy makers are exploring the role of intrapersonal and interpersonal competencies in supporting student success. A Sense of Belonging, meaning that college students (particularly underrepresented minorities and first-generation college students) feel that they belong in college, fit in well and are socially integrated. Approximately 85 percent of the studies measuring students’ sense of belonging demonstrated a positive impact of belonging on students’ college GPAs. A Growth Mindset, referring to college students’ beliefs that their own intelligence is not a fixed entity, but rather a malleable quality that college can help improve. Seventy-five percent of the studies measuring students’ growth mindset showed this characteristic had a positive impact on students’ college GPAs. Personal Goals and Values that college students perceive to be directly linked to the achievement of a future, desired end. Approximately 83 percent of the studies measuring personal goals showed this characteristic as having a positive impact on students’ final course grades. -------------------------

HOW SMART IS YOUR COUNTRY3? An intelligence quotient or IQ is a score derived from a set of standardized tests developed to measure a person's cognitive abilities ("intelligence") in relation to their age group. Around the world, the average IQ is the highest for East Asians around 106, for Whites in the United States and Europe about 100, and for Blacks about 85 in the United States and 70 in sub-Saharan Africa4. Some people may jump to conclusion that Chinese and Japanese are the most intelligent people in the world, and therefore, the Asian race is the superior race, just like some Americans believe that White people are superior over other races in the US. But that was the folly5 of Hitler, who believed in the American Eugenics program and implemented it in Germany. American eugenics was successfully implemented heavily influenced the German experimentation in their emerging theory of eugenics6. However, IQ not only depends on a person’s innate abilities (the genotype or the nature), but also the nurture. A study of 1,890 identical twins has found that strong early reading skill might positively affect later intelligence. The twins, who are part of an ongoing longitudinal study in the United Kingdom, share all their genes as well as a home environment. Differences shown in intellectual ability came from experiences they didn't share. The twin with stronger early reading skills was found to have higher overall intellectual ability by age 7. From this study, it is very clear that nurturing environment has a considerable impact on the IQ of a person. The study, published in the journal Child Development, was conducted by researchers at the University of Edinburgh and King's College London7. In another study, children whose parents supported them in labeling quantities of small sets performed better on math tests in preschool than children whose parents didn't support them in this way. These children also did better on addition and subtraction problems as late as first grade, suggesting that early maternal support of numerical skills may have lasting and strong connections to children's math achievement. These connections were strong and persisted and the more general level of learning stimulation mothers provided, the higher the children's intelligence8.

Yet another study, published last month in the Journal of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological and Social Sciences, finds that people who engaged in more regular sexual activity scored higher on tests that measured their verbal fluency and their ability to visually perceive objects and the spaces between them. Thus, IQ is not only dependent on the nurturing during the childhood, but also on the sexual activity of seniors9. Differences in national income are correlated with differences in the average national intelligence quotient (IQ). Differences in average national IQs constitute one important factor, but not the only contributing factor to differences in national wealth and rates of economic growth10, depending upon the author’s perspective,

agenda, and presentation. The same statement can be rewritten without changing the data, but the perspective, as follows: Differences in average national IQs are dependent on the important contributing factors such as the differences in national wealth and rates of economic growth, whether colonized by imperialist colonizers such as the United Kingdom, France, Portuguese, the Dutch, etc., whether manipulated into unending wars such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, etc., and whether the population has been subjected to slavery, and discrimination within a country such as the blacks in America or in South Africa. Thus, the bias of the author/researcher would play a bigger role than anything else in the IQ evaluation, e.g., in the United States, 15% to 20% of the Black IQ distribution exceeds the White median IQ, i.e., many Blacks obtain scores above the White average. It cannot be ignored that the genetic component in human variation, including between groups, is not only poor science, it is likely to be injurious both to unique individuals and to the complex structure of societies, the authors’ state11. Despite the fact that 15% to 20% of African American IQ exceeds the White median IQ and that so many Black Americans score above the average of White Americans, the author attempts to dilute Black American high scores by the implication of genetic mixing. Obviously, many Black Americans are White Americans born to White American Women and brought up in Whit American households, e.g., Former President Barak Hussain Obama.

The statistical hypocrisy12 and bias are clear, e.g., Obama was hounded for being the first black president for the entire tenure as president and continue to berate him and his legitimate American citizenship was questioned by the Birthers of America who continue to believe that Obama was

illegitimate who forgered his birth certificate, despite their leader and current President Trump’s13 acceptance of Obama’s legitimacy as a citizen of America, and despite the fact that a child born to an American citizen anywhere in the world is a citizen of America by birth under the American Law. "natural-born" means a citizen at birth — which Cruz was, by virtue of being born abroad to a US citizen (his mother). Previous Republican presidential nominees John McCain and Barry Goldwater also were born outside the country. Now even if Obama concedes that he was born on Mars to his White American

mother, like Cruz born in Canada, he would not be a legitimate president to Trump and the Birthers. That is why it was stated “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” Good statistical practice is an essential component of good scientific practice, the statement observes, and such practice “emphasizes principles of good study design and conduct, a variety of numerical and graphical summaries of data, understanding of the phenomenon under study, interpretation of results in context, complete reporting and proper logical and quantitative understanding of what data summaries

mean14.”

It appears that misuse arises from various sources: 1) degrees of competence in statistical theory and methods, 2) honest error in the application of methods, 3) egregious negligence, and 4) deliberate deception (misconduct)15. Humans are a complex species with plastic brains that allow rapid behavioral changes from one generation to the next through cultural evolution. Brain plasticity means our brains can be wired and rewired by experience16. Accordingly, multiple traits compose a broad definition of what it means to be an educated person. Indisputably, being an educated person is associated with having a certain command of a curriculum, and knowledge of theories and facts from various disciplines. But the term educated is also associated with the individual development, for example, that individuals are equipped with traits and skills such as critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, social skills, persistence, creativity, and self-control, etc., that allow them to contribute meaningfully to society and to succeed in their public lives, workplaces, homes, and other societal contexts. These traits are often called, generically, non-cognitive skills. Like persistence, dependability and other under-studied traits also play an important role in work and school success as do more easily measured skills, such as those recorded on achievement tests. Numerous instances can be cited of people with high IQs who fail to achieve success in life because they lacked self-discipline and of people with low IQs who succeeded by virtue of persistence, reliability and self-discipline. while IQ is well set by age 8, non-cognitive skills such as dependability continue to develop, and can be learned. American academics and statisticians have a bias toward believing that cognitive skills are of fundamental importance to success in life. However, social skills and motivation have large payoffs in the labor market17. Blaming the race and ethnicity for the deficiencies has been an easy escapist route for many societies, as they contend with the competitive political, military, and economic realities of global village18. Cognitive and non-cognitive deficits emerge early in the childhood, and if corrected, create high-skilled adults. Studies suggest that the early deficiencies can be remedied only by actively intervening early in failing families, without compromising the privacy and autonomy of the family in America, through schools by providing the required “nurturing” that makes the difference in the lives of future citizens of America, as shown in the Twin study discussed above. A study published in 2005 evaluated the IQ of all 42 presidents and proved to the world that each and every American President from the first to the 42nd had very high IQ, a lot more than the Asian average. The lowest IQ was 120 given to President Grant (see the table below), which is very high in comparison to average White Americans (100) and the Asians (106). Presidents with least IQ are given below, who are above average compared to above average Americans. Rank, President, Estimated IQ 42nd Ulysses S. Grant 120 41st James Monroe 124.13 40th Warren G. Harding 124.3 39th George W. Bush 124.88

American Presidential IQs19

The above graphs indicate that the success of a president did not depend on the IQ, and in fact, some of the presidents with lower IQ were more successful than or as successful as the president with the highest IQ.

Utilizes a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates political science, psychology, and American history to answer questions not addressed by previous scholarship. Provides a counterintuitive defense of hypocrisy by demonstrating the universality of in in political attitudes and, subsequently, removing its negative stigma.” “This book illuminates, and ultimately defends, attitudinal hypocrisy within the personal politics of Americans by utilizing statistical analyses within political history, social psychology, public opinion, and political science. Within a simple and parsimonious model of political attitudes, along with a novel method of calculating and operationalizing what attitudinal hypocrisy is, the book argues that the wielding of conflicting attitudes is a necessary characteristic of the American electorate. It uses an innovative multidisciplinary approach to answer some of the most pervasive questions in American politics: Why do conservatives preach the value of economic libertarianism, but decry the lack of government involvement in social issues and the military? Why do liberals extol the virtues of a regulatory economic state, but not a cultural or military state?” The Hypocrisy Of Pro-Deportation Cuban Americans.
