II. Our School

Introduction to the School

Holy Family Canossian College is a government aided English secondary school for girls

founded by the Sisters of the Canossian Daughters of Charity. The school was completed

in October 1972 and the official opening was held on 21 December 1973. The school first

came into existence with 400 students and 13 teaching staff. Under the guidance and

concerted efforts of Canossian Sisters and teachers, it steadily grew and expanded in all

aspects. The School consisted of S1 to S7 classes, with 995 students and around 81

teachers and staff.

Following the Canossian philosophy of education, our teachers are dedicated in their

commitment to offering an all-round development of our students. Emphasis is on

grooming students’ potential to become caring and self-directed learning individuals. The

school motto: United In Love draws its inspiration from the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary

and Joseph. Together, teachers and students strive to shine forth the spirit of Peace, Joy,

Harmony and Praise, living in communion of hearts for on-going formation and growth.

School Premises and Facilities

The school occupies an area of about 4338 square metres with 30 well-equipped

air-conditioned classrooms. There are 4 laboratories and various special rooms catering

for the diverse needs of the school curriculum. The School Improvement Programme was

completed in 2006, with a new block erected to provide more space and facilities for

learning and teaching.

In preparation for the New Senior Secondary Education (NSS), the English Language

Centre, the Library, the Personal, Social and Humanities Education (PSHE) Resource

Centre and the newly renovated Multi-Media Learning Centre (MMLC) are well-equipped

with up-to-date resources to encourage self-directed and self-access learning activities to

take place.

School Management

School-based management started in 1995 and a School Consultative Committee was set up

in 2005 to give opinions on school administration and management.

The School Management Committee (SMC) was composed of six members from the

sponsoring body.

Support for Student Development

The school has established a defined organization framework to support students’

moral, intellectual, physical, social, aesthetic, spiritual and emotional growth.

To live up to the Canossian education mission, our students took an active role in

community service and spiritual formation activities. The Religious Formation Team

held a series of evangelization programmes throughout the year.

To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Canossian Mission to the Far East, together

with 2 other Canossian secondary schools, a team named the Formation of Heart was

set up to learn how to render service with a difference.

Following the service spirit of our Foundress, a team of 50 young leaders called “Mano

Lunga” was nominated to learn to offer academic and peer counselling to their junior

schoolmates.

To enable students to develop an understanding of their learning capabilities, an award

system, the Self-access Learning Community was formed this year.

The Internal Scholarships were expanded to further motivate students to an all-round

development. Apart from academic achievements, students’ outstanding qualities in

service, leadership, aesthetics and character were fostered.

The Students’ Association (SA) played an important role in promoting student

leadership and learning. The SA took the lead in reinforcing the school body to be

eco-wise. A green policy was drafted to arouse fellow students’ attention to their role

in contributing to a greener world in the school campus.

IV. Our Learning and Teaching With the first year of the New Senior Secondary (NSS) implementation, the school’s major

concerns for the last and next two years were to “Capture Opportunities, Actualize

Potentials”. In 2009-2010, a whole-school approach was adopted to realize the school

theme “Building a School of Readers” that emphasized reading for knowledge and making

reading a habit for life.

With the collaborative efforts of the school Library and the Reading Team, a series of

activities were organized to create an environment conducive to reading. Book

sharing by students, teachers, parents, alumnae as well as professionals were held

throughout the year.

The school-based Vertical Curriculum of the NSS Curriculum Structure and its Key

Assessment Activities with their related generic skills were devised to serve as guide

for learning and teaching at all levels.

Other Learning Experiences (OLE) were extended to prepare students for the NSS

university entrance requirements. Drama, Music and Visual Arts lessons were

introduced to enrich their aesthetic competence.

The Multi-media Learning Centre (MMLC) was renovated to create the setting for

open forums and presentations, thus promoting students’ social awareness, and

impromptu discussion before a large audience.

V. Major Concerns (Achievements and Reflections)

Priority 1: Whole-school Approach to Reading for Life

Achievements

1. Whole-school Approach to Reading for Life

The whole-school was involved in reading enhancement programmes which

included:

Book sharing by students, teachers, parents, alumnae as well as professionals;

A total of 15 book promotion activities, focusing on a variety of themes to

expose students to diverse reading materials;

A 42-hour Readathon launched during the Lunar New Year Holidays to develop

and sustain students’ interest in reading and thus enhancing their reading

habits; and

Students’ radio story broadcasts, quizzes and nomination of their Favourite

Books on 23 April 2010, World Book Day.

A collection of students’ Chinese writing over the last 2 years was published in April

2010, motivating students to enjoy reading their peers’ works of creation.

All students joined the English Builder and Wisenews programmes which provided a

relevant and immediate resource to develop their reading habits.

Book promotion sessions scheduled on every Thursday during the morning

assembly drew students’ attention to the diverse reading materials available in the

library.

All stakeholders were invited to recommend their favourite books using the

bookmark specially designed for this purpose.

Donations from Secondary 5 and 7 graduates were used to purchase books to enrich

the collection in the PSHE Learning Centre.

2. Reading up to Heighten Green Awareness

An Inter-house Competition which aimed to promote extensive reading on

environmental protection issues in the form of fashion shows and quizzes was held.

The Students’ Association drafted a green policy and organized the No

Air-conditioning Week to encourage fellow schoolmates to help to conserve energy

and build a green world.

Reflections

Quality of students’ sharing in the morning assembly was very much enhanced.

Consideration could be made to arrange Class Teachers and Assistant Class Teachers

to supervise the students in their choice of reading during the Reading Time.

Strategic reading skills could be introduced to students at all levels in order to

sustain their reading habits for life.

A list of recommended and prescribed booklist could be compiled to widen students’

scope of reading for enjoyment and academic purposes.

Page 11: CONTENTS Page I. Our Vision-Mission 1 · HKCEE 11 HKALE 11 ... Key Issues of School Development Plan 2010 – 2011 20 Appendix I: Progress and Evaluation Reports of Various Grants

9

Priority 2: Communicative and Diversified Learning Approaches

Achievements

1. Encouraging Collaborative Learning in Liberal Studies (LS)

Set lesson time was arranged to encourage LS teachers to have the time and space

for collaborative lesson planning, materials design and peer class observation.

A students’ manual on Independent Enquiry Studies (IES) was produced to provide

a self-directed project research guide for students.

An Education Consultant was invited to give professional guidance and supervision

on LS teachers’ lesson design, paper setting as well as approaches to assessing

students’ learning progress.

Good practices observed were shared in school-based staff development sessions.

2. Setting up of Self-access Learning Community (SALC)

The SALC was set up to encourage students to learn on their own initiative.

Secondary 1 students who were less proficient in English language were encouraged

to join the online Clarity brush-up English programmes.

The initial response to this programme was promising as over 30% of our students

were awarded a certificate for their participation.

A team of teachers helped to prepare the resources and give small-group coaching to

needy students in their learning process.

Reflections

To encourage pedagogical change in the NSS classroom, efforts should be made to

develop a shared understanding among teachers of the strategies adopted in LS

learning and teaching.

Questioning techniques were to be further explored to stretch students’ potential to

develop higher-order thinking.

A more simplified version of the SALC award system would help to direct students’

attention to the self-monitored programme for self-enhancement in the 5 aspects of

development in focus.

Students’ strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement could be more carefully

reviewed using the data gathered in the SALC Learning Profile.

Page 12: CONTENTS Page I. Our Vision-Mission 1 · HKCEE 11 HKALE 11 ... Key Issues of School Development Plan 2010 – 2011 20 Appendix I: Progress and Evaluation Reports of Various Grants

10

Priority 3: Leadership Enhancement

Achievements

1. Setting up “Mano Lunga” (Guidance Sisters) to Tutor their Juniors

A team of 50 young leaders called “Mano Lunga” was nominated. These young

leaders were given training from teachers to develop their language and

mathematics skills so as to offer academic and peer counselling to their junior

schoolmates.

This team conducted an Orientation Day Camp specially designed for new

Secondary 1 students to familiarize themselves with the learning spirit of the school.

Small group tutorials were organized on a regular basis to foster sisterhood among

Holy Familians and strengthen junior students’ performance in learning.

As part of the leadership training, a group of 35 student leaders together with the

“Mano Lunga” visited the Shanghai Expo 2010 China in mid-July to gain first-hand

understanding about “Better City, Better Life”, and hence bring home ideas for

better school, better world.

2. Taking part in Joint School Community Service Projects

A joint school service team called the Formation of Heart was set up to enable our

potential students to learn how to render service with a difference.

Fifteen self-nominated members were selected to undergo series of training and

exposure programmes.

This group of students took time to visit children of ethnic groups and the

abandoned animals.

Reflections

To promote the Canossian service spirit, the “Mano Lunga” could join hands with the

SALC in enhancing self-motivated learning among Secondary 1 and 2 students.

Class Teachers could help in identifying potential young leaders and creating more

opportunities for students to enhance their competence and confidence in the course of

serving fellow classmates.

Members of the Formation of Heart could pass on their service skills to other school

teams in leading and coordinating the Caritas Bazaar to be held in November 2010.

Evaluation on the Usage of Various Grants

With the employment of three contract teachers, three Assistant Teachers, one IT technician and

one IT supporting staff, the workload of the staff was relatively relieved:

1. Student Learning and Activities: Enhancement and remedial programmes on

Mathematics, Chinese Language, as well as Humanities subjects were organized to

strengthen students’ competence and skills in learning. Extended learning activities, such

as participation in educational trips, Secondary 2 drama lessons and Chinese classical dance

helped widen students’ scope of learning. The gifted programmes for high achievers were

materialized in the “Formation of Heart” leadership and service training.

2. Staff Development: “School wellness” was the theme for this year’s professional

development of teachers. The diversified learning needs of our students were the focus of

our school-based development programmes. With the support of professional teacher

trainers, teachers were helped to unleash their inner potentials in the brain gym workshop.

Effective communication with students and parents was another dimension addressed.

Department-based staff development programmes were organized to better equip teachers

for the pressing demands in NSS curriculum preparation.

3. School Improvement: With concerted efforts, the Multi-media Learning Centre (MMLC)

was renovated for dual purpose to serve as a Lecture Theatre for open forums, presentations

as well as connections to other schools via video conferencing. The former Geography

Store Room was converted to a PSHE Learning Centre to encourage small-group tutoring

after school.
