Pingalwara Diary 67 PREFACE Every Child comes with message that God is not yet discouraged with man”. These were the views of Rabindranath Tagore. In the development of personality of child beside parents and teachers society play an important role. Society is the web of social relationships and it is always changing. Man is social being and he is dependent on society for protection, comfort, nature, education, content of his thoughts, his dreams and his aspirations. But in today society there is great influence of media whether it is T.V, Radio, Computer or Internet on children psychological health. The imparting of the value education to the present day children and youth is the last resort that can save society from disaster. This booklet contain the articles selected by Bhagat Puran Singh Ji (Founder of Pingalwara) and Bibi ji Dr. Inderjit Kaur [President, All India Pingalwara Charitable Society (Regd.)]. The Role of Society in growth of children is explained in article Is Modern Life Making Children Unhappy?” by Libby Brooks. Childhood has always been a disputed territory, its true geography quickly forgotten as we grow older, replaced by an adult

So is childhood genuinely in such crisis?Certainly, children growing up today are subject toincreasingcontainment, surveillanceand the tyrannyofconsumerandmoralchoice. And yet our panic about childhood betrays a deep ambivalence, too. Our children are in danger, fattened on fast food, corrupted by commerce, traumatized by testing. And at the same time, otherchildren are dangerous, malevolent beneath hoodedtops, chaoticintheclassroom, bestialinthebedroom.

Sir,—Modern violence makes no distinctionbetweenaVIPandanordinaryperson, richandpoor, criminalandinnocent.Dailynewsbulletinsofdeathevoke impotent anger. Cries of relatives of wholefamilies slaughtered, corpses shown on televisiondo not help the killers to repent. We arewitnessingthe strange phenomenon of all-round helplessness,of unlimited political power failing to overcometinypocketsof so-called terrorismscatteredalloverthe world. The latter are highly motivated persons. They have a commitment to achieve or Perish, nogovernment agency can evermatch. They fight, notfor personal gain but for some cause dear to them.Their revolutionary spirit, though oftenmisdirected,is far more real and valuable than what politiciansandbureaucrats, whoputselfbeforethecountry, canmuster.Buttheywillneedtobeconvincedthattherearebiggerandmoreimportantcauseswaitingforthemto fight for. This is not an insurmountable problem.Becausequiteanumberofthemareeducatedyoungpeopleofexceptionallystrongwillpowerallnationscanputtouse. Youth Power Why They RevoltK.D.Gangrade

Youth power has to be reckoned with andlistened to. The apprehensions and actual problemsof the youth have to be understood and resolved. The authorities must have continuous discussionand dialogue with the students to defuse the issue of reservation. The psychological distance between theyounger generation and the older generation has become a normal feature of the present society.Revolt and indiscipline are the natural outcome ofsuchasituation.Thepresentagehas rightfullybeencharacterizedbyyouthrebellionthelieofwhichhasneverbeenseeninthepast.Thestudentshavebeeninthevanguardofsucharevolt. Children may enter the world with different capacitiesforempathy, aresultofneuralconnectionsin the brain. The capacity for empathy may bepartlyorwhollylackingindisorderslikeautismandschizophrenia, in which the minds focused inward. But in otherwise normal children, the environmentinwhichtheyarerearedcanmakeabigdifferenceinwhether empathy is fostered or suppressed.Healthyself-esteem is essential to empathy, so anything thathelps children feel good about themselves will alsohelp them recognize and respond effectively to thefeelings of others. Nancy Eisenberg, a psychologist at ArizonaState University, agreed. “Children need a positivecaring relationshipwith their parents or caretakers,”

Dr. Eisenberg emphasized that in addition toavoidingphysicalpunishment,“children should never be threatened with a loss of love” formisbehaviour.Caretakers can help young children understand howother people feel, say, when a child cries because atoy breaks or is snatched by another child. When achildactskindlytowardsomeone,MarjorieTaylor, apsychologistattheUniversityofOregon, suggeststhatsaying something like “You’re very kind for doing this” or “You’re the kind of person who does nice things like that”canhelpmakeempathyapartofayoungchild’sidentity. True Education Promotes Spirit of Inclusiveness

SadhguruJaggiVasudev What is the role of school in education? Educating yourself fundamentally means tobroaden your horizons. From being in limitedness, youwant to enlarge yourself.Unfortunately, thougheducation today is broadening your informationcapabilities, youarebecomingverynarrow in termsofyourperceptionandincludinglifearoundyou. In theAshram, if you have to live with 500people, you need an enormous sense of inclusion.Withoutthat,youcannotlivewithpeopleharmoniously.We dropped all those uncles and aunts and grand-mothers.Thenwesaidfamilymeansme,mywifeandmychildren.MyparentsareOKbutwife’sparents?‘No’.Thenwethoughtparentsaretoooldandareintheway.Nowfamilymeansme,mywife,mychildren.
