Program Book 2014 | INDONESIA INTERNATIONAL WORK CAMP
SHORTTERMVOLUNTEERING(STV)/WORKCAMPS
Short Term Volunteering (STV) also called as workcamp is an international volunteering program where volunteers stay 1 – 3 weeks for the project. Volunteers work in teams. There are 5 ‐ 25 for volunteers volunteering together in one workcamp. As IIWC collaborates workcamps and long term volunteering to achieve each project goals, therefore, all workcamp project sites are the IIWC Long & Middle term Volunteering (LMTV) project sites as well. While LMTV projects are open the whole year, IIWC workcamps are organized seasonal (winter, spring, and summer). The workcamp volunteers are expected to be team players, be able and enjoy exploring ideas especially on the implementing part of the project. Two campleaders (or one for small group) are volunteering together in the workcamp. They are volunteers who are selected, trained, and mandated several responsibilities to facilitate and lead the workcamps. However, the successful of a workcamp is determined by the team work.
Volunteer will stay in a camp site mostly located in the project site, in collaboration with partners or local communities with the main purpose of exchanging experiences, culture, mutual benefit between the relevant parties.
Workcamp is mostly a euphoria event. International volunteers will become stars for the locals as most of Indonesian people are interested to new things/people including foreigners. This way, IIWC takes this opportunity to promote and raising awareness of issues addressed in the workcamps towards specific groups such as local mothers, fathers, students or just public in general. Workcamp is aimed at giving opportunity for international and local volunteers who would like to be involved in the action of IIWC international voluntary service (IVS) projects in seasonal basis. The objectives are:
A. To exchange experience and culture, to provide opportunities for volunteers to connect with and learn from the community through enjoyment of local life and exchange.
B. To promote change with remarkable and public action of voluntary works that improves the community.

A. Background: Mangkang is a fisher and farmer village located in west Semarang. This project has become annually and continuously project organized by IIWC in answering the needs of preserving the coastal side of North Java Sea in Mangkang. About 1,1 km costal line in Mangkang area is now in danger due to the abrasion of the sea, cutting mangrove by local people and heavy force from the river flows. Before, many kinds of fish and shrimps are living there, but now since the condition of the mangrove forest is getting worse, it is quite difficult to find the species anymore. Fisherman also needs to go further to the ocean to fish and it means much work they need to do to earn money. Mangkang is the project site for IIWC’s World Tanabata Action since 2008. It is a global project initiated by NICE Japan then was adopted by CCIVS in the beginning of 2008 where volunteerism all over the world through IVS planting trees and hang their wishes in Tanzaku paper on a bamboo leaf. In the year of 2014, Mangkang is granted as partner of SCI global campaign Climate Change for Peace http://www.sciint.org/ climate‐justice‐campaign
B. Project: Preserving natural diversity and sea shore from the abrasion because of no more mangrove and too strong waves from the ocean will be the main focus of the camp. This project implemented by collaboration between IIWC Indonesia and local community named BIOTA Foundation. http://biotafoundation.blogspot.com/.
C. The aims of the camps are to initiate the project of protecting the sea shore by planting mangroves and, increase the
awareness of the local people, the fisherman, and local students to protect their environment as well as their future.

LMTVProjectDescription
IIWC‐LMTV01/Abu Hurairah Orphan House/Salatiga Central Java/Kids, Edu/Any date except July‐August/18+/1 vols Abu Hurairah orphanage is one of moslem orphanages located in Salatiga (2 hours by bus from Semarang city center) with 65 children living in this orphanage. Orphanages in Indonesian's sense can be slightly different from those in other countries because orphanages in Indonesia do not always mean for the orphan children providing them with places to live, but also a place for the children coming from poor family background that they can get possibility to have education. Abu Hurairah orphanage serve the function as a place to stay for the children as well as to have education at least up to senior high school (in most cases up to the children reach the age of 18 years old). Most of children are orphan but many of them are also coming from poor family background that can not afford for the children's education. The needs that we identified from this project are: capacity building for the children to increase their self confident, inter cultural learning, additional English classes, and skill development for the children. Please note that the orphanage has 3 parts; 2 in Kauman (girls orphanage and for boys aged from 6‐15 years old) and Soka part ( for older boys). The volunteers’ placement will depend on the need and decision of the orphanage, either the volunteer will go to Kauman or Soka part. Project: Organized together with the Moslem orphanage of Abu Hurairah, the volunteers will organize additional English lessons for the children in the afternoon and evening (the children live separately between girls and boys and mainly the volunteers will work with the boys) and in the weekend or holiday, the volunteers can also organize additional fun activity for capacity building and self confident raising. Because of the limited time that the volunteers can spend to have activities with the children (most children will go to schools in the morning), the project will be also combined with school projects where the children are going to. The volunteers will be expected to organize English classes in some Muhammadiyah schools in the morning, either for elementary, junior or senior high schools. Other activities like inter cultural night, cooking different kind of foods from different countries, movie nights, outing together on holidays are also suggested to the volunteers to organize together with the children for raising self confident and self esteem as well as inter cultural learning aspect of the children. Skills classes can be organized accordingly to develop the skills of the children that later on they can use the skills to earn money when they are out from the orphanage. Work: Organizing additional English lesson for the children in the afternoon, organizing English classes at schools in the morning where the children are going to, organizing different kind of

skills development activities like cooking, drawing, music, etc, organizing inter cultural night for example movie nights or other cultural performances together with the children. Accommodation: in the orphan house together with the children. The volunteers will have their own room with an Indonesian shared bathroom and toilet, simple matters and closet, shared kitchen or else the volunteer will be accommodated in the boarding house close to the orphanage. Location: Abu Hurairoh, Salatiga, Central Java Indonesia. The orphanage is located very close to the main road and Salatiga city center which is very easy for public facilities. Internet cafe, university, hospital, markets are reachable from the orphanage on foot. Language: English, some Indonesian will be a great help. Terminal: Semarang Ahmad Yani Airport or Tawang Train Station or Terboyo Bus Station. Please do not come directly to the project site since volunteer will get orientation in IIWC office. Duration : At least 2 Months Special Remarks: Please note that volunteers should wear shirt with sleeve and over the knee skirt/trousers. Volunteers with no visible tattoo, piercing on face, dread lock and big motivation are very welcome. There is a university project going on in Abu Hurairah orphanage. The University project is a project to give a scholarship and opportunity to the children in the orphanage to continue to the university and obtain higher education. In Indonesia, it is quite expensive to go to the university and most children in the orphanage do not have any chance to go to university because lack of money. Some ex long term volunteers set up a scheme to raise some fund and send the children to the university. The additional tasks for the volunteers will be preparing the senior high school children to pass the final national examination and enrollment test, selecting the children that will get the scholarship, mentoring and monitoring the children who get the scholarship. There is also garbage separation and environment education for children that the children are expected to separate the garbage and the previous volunteer built a burning storage in an environmental way. You are also expected to continue this activity. Fee: 190 Euro per month. This fee is covering: administration cost, information and support in obtaining visa before arrival, accommodation, transportation from IIWC office to Abu Hurairah orphanage when you start your project, orientation session, evaluation session, project coordination, supervision, police letter approval, and educational material needed by your project. Project: The world heritage volunteer program which is under the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Program. It was officially launched in 2008. The project furthermore aims at demonstrating the value of non‐formal education as an approach to disseminate the values and expertise developed at the inter‐governmental level to a large public and to young people in particular. It is also aiming at exploring opportunities for a dynamic dialogue between the heritage and education expert involved in the promotion and protection of the sites and the volunteers and youth groups developing concrete world heritage projects to be carried out. In general, the patrimonito projects are expected to: 1. sensitise the international and local volunteers, the local community as well as the
concerned authorities around issues related to World Heritage; 2. increase the contribution by youth and voluntary service organizations to WH promotion
and preservation with activities planned, based on the concrete needs of the site and in coordination with the site management and local/national authorities;
3. create and strengthen synergies between the local youth organisation and the local community, site management, national and local authorities and link cooperation to the issue of sustainable development.
IIWC first WHV patrimonito project was Prambanan workcamp in 2008. The activity was organized based on the need of the awareness raising among the youth in protecting, promoting and preserving the world heritage site. In 2009, IIWC started the WHV patrimonito project in Borobudur and successfully established a network of senior high school students under the frame of: The Young Guardian for Borobudur temple. The project was also launching an awareness campaign in the temple area involving the Young Guardian for Borobudur temple and the visitors, creating educational materials in 5 different languages for the visitors to protect and preserve the world heritage site, making posters for campaign and actively outreaching visitors for short discussion about the future expectation of the visitors toward the existence of the temple.

It is famous for burial/ funeral ceremony as huge part of the culture. Toraja is listed as one of UNESCO World Heritage tentative list. In December 2011 IIWC Director was invited to present the World Heritage Volunteer (WHV) Borobudur Young Guardian in Action project in an occasion name the International Youth Forum, “The Role of Youth; Action on Millennium Development Goals Toward and Preserving World Cultural Heritage” organized by the KRIS Foundation in Tana Toraja. The Borobudur Young Guardian in Action project (LMTV11) has been organized by IIWC since 2009 under the global action of CCIVS – WHC UNESCO called the WHV program. From this presentation the KRIS Foundation was interested to host an IVS project for a big goal: supporting Toraja to be listed as WH site in UNESCO, an upgrade status from tentative list. The effort toward Toraja becomes listed in the World Heritage has been done by KRIS foundation since 2006 using the community based approach. IIWC‐LMTV15/LMTV Ujung Kulon/Pandeglang, Banten Province/ HERI, ENVI, EDU /any date except July 2014/20+/2vols Project: The existence of Ujung Kulon National Park with its native animal the Javanese Rhinoceros is supposed to be supported by the living local community in surrounded area. This is often neglected due to lack of awareness and economical reason of the local people living in and surrounding. This will be the first LMTV project in Ujung Kulon, Pandeglang, Banten in Indonesia. As one of the results of 1st Asia‐Pacific World Heritage Regional Forum of Site Managers and Youth NGOs: Linking Netactivities in August 2012 in Korea; IIWC, in cooperation with Ujung Kulon National Park office is to revive a so‐called conservation community (kader konservasi) program of Ujung Kulon which is inline with the Young Guardian in Action concept that IIWC established since 2009 in Borobudur Compound Temple. In cooperation with the Ujung Kulon National Park Office (BTNUK), the first year of LMTV project in this site is to support the start up of the Young Guardian Club (YGC) in areas around the Ujung Kulon National Park. This is a strategic issue in Ujung Kulon, to involve local youth to protect Ujung Kulon as for many years forest products have become one of the main incomes for the local people and threatening its food chain which leads to threaten its biodiversity and in the end will deprive the existence of the Javanese Rhinoceros as this is their only habitat. After 5 years experience of organizing the similar project in Borobudur Temple, IIWC is keen to expand the project and invite international volunteers to contribute to the issue in Ujung Kulon. To support the start up of Young Guardian in Action program, there are two main areas: 1) Related to support of conservation activity by making pictorial/ video report
In this area, volunteers are to do manual activity in the field with the forest rangers in duty.

Not only to support them but also for volunteers to understand more about the national park, the ecosystem, and social life surrounding it then making attractive educative pictorial/ video reports to be used for official documentation of the national park as well as starting up Young Guardian in Action Project. Two topics possible for volunteers to volunteer in this area are Ujung Kulon Ecosystem Controller and Ujung Kulon Protection. Volunteers can select the topic especially according to their interest, also if they have related background or experience that would be nice.
2) Related to Raising awareness activity In this area, volunteers are to go to local community and schools to raise awareness about Ujung Kulon protection and how the target group can contribute to the protection effort.
Work: Various activities including:
1) Going into the jungle or beaches following the forest rangers in checking the vegetation, planting the Rhinoceros’ favourite food plantation and its weeds, native birds, and other undocumented native animals or plantation, measuring foot print of Rhino, etc.

Program Book 2014 | INDONESIA INTERNATIONAL WORK CAMP
Note 1. Organizing and managing additional English
classes in the afternoon with the children who stay in the dormitory. After the school time (also at YPAC), the children mostly do not have many things to do. Some children go back to their home, some of them go back to the dormitory and spend the time naping and wait the sunset for evening activities. Additional English (or other languages) is very needed because English is considered to be very important at school, but also very difficult for the children. To do this program, volunteer can discuss it with he staff who responsible in the dormitory.
2. Having club activities Besides additional English lesson, volunteer can also organize club activities with children to grow their talents like music, drawing, singing or others. This aims to grow the talents of the children and give them space to express themshelves through positive activities. Volunteer can do this together with he educational services.
3. Character building for the children The defable children mostly having low self esteem and confidence. It happens because most of them are coming from disable condition in physic or mentally. Then the discrimination among friends often happens as well. Thus, building characters for the children will be very necessary to increase the self confident. So, activities like out bound or other out door activities for group and personal charactert building can be organized by the volunteers during their stay. Weekend or holiday period of the children will be a good time to do these activities.
4. Supporting the skill development of the children Based on the objectives of YPAC, that the goals is that the children can stand on their own and not become burden of the society, so it is important to give some skills (working togetehr with workshop staff ) This skill development is aimed to prepare the children with sufficient skills so that they can be independent in the future.
Hence, it will be very nice for the children if the volunteers can also introduce easy, simple, applicable and sellable skills to the children like making cookies, making dried foods, candies, or others.
