Have you said “I Love You” to your Mother, to your Father? How about to your friends? Did they also say “I Love You Too”? How does it feel when you hear this statement from someone special? “I Love You and You Love Me Back”. How can you relate this to the Newton’s Third Law of Motion? “In every Action, there is Equal and Opposite Reaction. We have discussed the First and Second Laws of Newton’s Three Laws of Motion. Let us now explore the beauty of the Third Law. At the end of this topic, the students can answer the following questions:
INTRODUCTION
What is Newton’s Third Law of Motion? Can you cite the difference between the concept of
Action-Reaction and Balanced Forces? How? Explain and Relate Action-Reaction Forces from the
given situations.
IGNITE (I MOVE YOU, YOU MOVE ME!) STUDY THE PICTURES BELOW: PUT CHECK IN THE COLUMN FOR MOVE ME, IF THE PICTURE SHOWS ACTION-REACTION, IF YOU THINK THE PICTURE
SHOWS BALANCED FORCES, CHECK THE YOU MOVE COLUMN.

OBJECTIVES: State the Newton’s Third Law
of Motion and identify Action-Reaction Forces;
Distinguish Action-Reaction forces from Balanced force
MATERIALS: Letter of Permission, Parent’s Consent, 3 boats without engine, paddle, Activity Notebook, and Pen
ACTIVITY 1I CHASE YOU, YOU CHASE ME
BACK
PROCEDURE:
PREPARATORY ACTIVITYAsk for a permission from the School Principal and a parent consent. Remind the students the Precautionary Measures during the Conduct of Activity.Prior from the Actual Day of the Activity, prepare the boats through asking the permission of the father/owner.(refer to figure 2)Identify an area suitable for the activity. It should be nearer from the seashore.
FIGURE 2: SAMPLE OF BOAT (emotionatpeek.wordexpress.com)
ACTUAL ACTIVITY
The class should go to the Nearest Sea. Divide the class, each group must have
5 members. The group will choose 3 representatives
to ride on the Boat. Each group should select a leader and secretary.
Assigned somebody to stay at the starting line and he/she will be the one to set the participants.
Once the “Go” signal is being said, the representatives should start paddling the boat. Observe.
Continuation for Actual Activity:
Observe the acceleration of the boat when only 1 student is paddling the boat. How about when there are 2, then 3 students? Compare their accelerations.
The teacher will record the performance of the participants.
Assigned student to stay at the finishing line. The participants should CHASE each other to win the Game.
The team who will reach the finishing line first will be the winner.
Afterwards, secure the materials used in the Activity before going back to the classroom.
Ask the following Guide Questions:Q1. What caused the boat to move and reach the finishing line?Q2. What is the Action and the Reaction forces in the activity?Q3. The Action-Reaction Forces are Equal. Based from the Activity, How are you going to testify this?Q4. What is the direction of the boat when you push the water backward? How about when you paddle the water forward?Q5. Is the third Law of Motion is being applied in the Activity? Support .Q7. How can you relate the statement posted in the introduction “I Love You and You Love Me Back” to this activity? Elaborate.
ANALYSIS
Let us go back to the pictures from the Ignite, If you Have Checked the column I Move, Identify the Action-Reaction Forces, If you have Checked the You Move column, Identify the Balanced forces. Complete the table below.

KEY CONCEPT: THE NEWTON’S THIRD LAW OF MOTION STATES THAT IN EVERY ACTION, THERE
IS EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION
Action-Reaction Forces Balanced Forces
Two forces are equal in size. Two forces are opposite to
each other in terms of direction.
Two forces have the same line of action.
Action acts on one object, while reaction acts on another object.
Two forces are in equal size. Two forces are opposite to
each other in terms of direction.
Two forces act along the same line.
Two forces act upon the same object
From the Activity, you observed the similarities and differences between the interacting forces in terms of magnitude and direction. This relationship is stated in Newton’s Third Law of Motion – Law of Interaction.
Table 1: Comparing the Action-Reaction and Balanced Forces
BECAUSE THE FORCES ARE EQUAL IN MAGNITUDE AND OPPOSITE IN DIRECTION, DO YOU THINK THEY WILL CANCEL EACH OTHER? IN THIS CASE, NO ADDITION OF FORCES WILL TAKE PLACE BECAUSE THESE FORCES ARE ACTING ON DIFFERENT BODIES.
Example: Juan is sitting the Chair. Identify the Action-Reaction Forces and the Balanced Forces.Action- The force exerted by Juan to the Chair.Reaction-The force exerted by the Chair to Juan.Balanced Forces: The Normal Force exerted by the chair to Juan. The Gravitational Force exerted to JUAN.
Newton’s third Law of Motion is the Law of Interaction also known as Law of Action-Reaction. It states that “In every Action there is Equal and Opposite Reaction. Meaning to say, the magnitude of the force is the same and it is coming from the opposite direction.
GENERALIZATION:
Take note: The Action-Reaction forces act on different objects
GOAL: Minimize Human Injuries during Car CollisionsROLE: You are a Product EndorserAUDIENCE: The High School StudentsSITUATION: The School is celebrating the School Safety Month. As a student, you want to share some tips to your schoolmates on how to become safe in riding specially those houses which are not walking distances from the School Campus. You are going to encourage them to use and wear seatbelts. PRODUCT: Motion Advertisement: Comic StripIn a piece long bond paper, the students should make an advertisement through comic strip about the Significance of using seatbelts as it relates to the Law of Interaction. The characters should show actions to further demonstrate the Newton’s third law. The outputs will be pasted on the mini-information board within the campus.
