GOVERNOR GENERAL’S MESSAGE

Hello Ladies:

I hope this message finds you safe and well. We have been through one of the most

horrendous experiences of our lives. I don’t think any of us will ever forget the words Covid

19 or pandemic. Who would have ever thought that our Federal, State and local governments

would be brought to their knees and close down by a microscopic organism? We have had to

wait in lines for food and toilet paper would be a coveted commodity. In addition, we have had all our meetings cancelled in DC and have had to find other ways to meet such as Zoom,

Webex, and conference calling. Many of our members were busy sewing masks, quilts to donate, volunteering at hospitals, testing facilities and food banks. Kudos to all of you who

donated your time. And it has not only been the pandemic as several of our members also experienced earthquakes and

tornadoes. It is my hope that at this point it is all behind us.

Despite all of this going on, your National Officers and Chairman have kept working. Your Governor General has been

working with the Bylaws Committee to revise the Bylaws and Standing Rules. There were many items that have become archaic and they needed to be cleaned up. You will find them in this issue of the Calumet and we will vote on

them in September. I would like to thank our Parliamentarian Shirley Vanderbeck PRP and Bylaws Chairman Nancy

Kilbourn on their hard work on the of the Bylaws. And I would like to thank Bylaw Committee members Mary

Armstrong and Rebecca West for working on the revision of the Standing Rules. They have all done an excellent job. Your Governor General has also been working with First Deputy Governor General Judy Farrigan on extracting the

information on applications for the Lineage Book. I had hoped to have it ready for our April Board meeting but it got

sidelined. We hope to have ready for our Annual Council in September.

We have a new brochure thanks to our Website Chairman Bev Baker. It is absolutely beautiful. It is available online for

you to print out and distribute. I hope you will use it to interest new members. We would all like to see our Society

grow.

All scholarship pins have been ordered and are available as well as items on the printed supply form. I still have my bear

pins available for those of you who wish to support Native American Schools. In the beginning of April, our Finance Chairman Anne Farley drafted a letter for me to sign and send to the Department

of the Treasury as the first step in gaining back our tax-exempt status. The Finance Committee, which is composed of

your Governor General, Anne Farley and Susan Leininger have had several meetings on the subject. We have come up

with a plan and hope that it is successful. Anne sent out letters to the State Society Governors and Chapter Governors of those that would be interested in opting in on a voluntary basis. Several Governors responded that they would like to opt

in. Anne completed an application with Societies that are currently in compliance and it was submitted to the IRS with a filing fee. If we are successful, we will begin working with the States/Chapters that are not in compliant to help them to

be able to file their 990N’s again. We will report to you when we receive a response. Our Society owes Anne many

thanks for volunteering her time to work on this. She has spent a lot of hours working on a solution.

The Nevada State Society has planned a wonderful conference for us and I hope you will make every effort to attend.

The information and reservation form is in this issue of the Calumet. In addition, Governor Linda Miller has a pin available for sale. It is quite lovely. It cannot be worn on the official ribbon but you may wear it alone or with your

other unofficial pins.

This will be me last message to you as your Governor General. I have so enjoyed my term of office. My goal was to get

our Society back on track and I feel I have attained my goal. We have accomplished so much in a short time. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Executive Board and my National Chairmen who have worked tirelessly for this

Society making sure we have had all our supplies, pins, flags, printed materials, a new website, a members only Face-book page and our new combined Yearbook, Handbook, Bylaws, Standing Rules and Ritual. And we are working on a

solution to our IRS status. I also wish thank them for their patience, for never complaining when I have called them late in the evening when I had an idea or request. They all responded with a yes! I could not have asked for better people to

organizations meetings. The time will be determined by the current Governor General.

The suggested changes are for clarification and better sentence structure.

Suggested changes to read:

The Spring Board of Management will be held in Washington D.C. in April, prior to, or following, the other heritage

society meetings. The Spring Board of Management dates will be determined by the current Governor General.

3. Standing Rules numbers 9-13 belong in the Handbook, not in the Standing Rules. Removing them to the proper

location gives the Society 8 Standing Rules.

OFFICER REPORTS

GOVERNOR GENERAL—Cheryl “Cher” Miller Sesma Your Governor General has been busy since our Annual Council in September on the improvement of our Society. She

has been working with First Deputy Governor Judy Farrigan extracting the information from our applications for our new Lineage Book. We have not had a Lineage Book since 2003 when Volumes 1 and 2 were published. This book

included the first 1000 applications. Our new book will cover applications 1001 – 2000. We currently have over 2400

members thanks to our diligent Registrar Lynda Moreau. She has done an amazing job approving applications in record

time. It has been interesting reading the applications and discovering the many types of services our ancestors were in-volved in.

This officer has also been working with the Bylaws Committee to present a revised set of Bylaws and Standing Rules that will be printed in our June/July Calumet and will be voted on in September.

This officer is happy to report that we found a source to reproduce our bags thanks to the ladies in Georgia and they are

also working on completing a banner for our Society that will be handed from Governor General to Governor General

for her meetings. We hope to have it in September.

In the course of time, we have run out of many of our scholarship pins that were originally donated by Honorary Gover-

nor General Susan Chamberlain. She has since passed away and no one was aware of where they were made. There-fore, this officer contacted Pamela Wright who has recast most of our pins for production and they are now all in stock and available. This officer would like to thank Susan Leininger, Scholarship Pin chairman for keeping us abreast of

sales and depleted pins. To ensure that you all receive your scholarship pins when you make a donation, we have imple-

mented a new procedure. Donation checks are now being sent to the Scholarship Pin chairman who will forward the

check to the Treasurer General and forward your pin to you. It makes it much easier to keep track of who is qualified for which pin. It has been working very well.

Bev Baker our website chairman is currently working on a new and improved brochure that will be available online soon. She has done a wonderful job posting information as it has become available. Our next task will be to compile an

ancestor list for proven ancestors.

This officer is thrilled to have approved the formation of a new chapter in Georgia. Our Society continues to grow. We

wish the new chapter well.

Your Governor General has also been working with Finance Chairman Anne Farley on reinstating our tax-exempt status

with the IRS. We have submitted a letter to the IRS requesting tax-exempt status and included State Societies that were already compliant. If this is successful, we will be working with State Societies and/or Chapters that are not compliant

to make them compliant. We hope this will be the correct procedure and we will get our tax-exempt status reinstated. If we are unsuccessful, we gave it a try and we will work with the non-compliant Societies to be able to file again. Thank

you, Anne, for all your hard work. It is greatly appreciated by the entire Society.

This officer was honored to attend the California State Conferences in San Ramon where she was a guest at the com-

bined Friendship Luncheon that included California State Society Daughters of Indian Wars, Daughters of Colonial Wars and New England Women. This decorations and table favors were very nice as was the camaraderie

This officer continues to look to the future growth of our Society.

FIRST DEPUTY GOVERNOR GENERAL—Julia A. Farrigan After three and a half years of work it is a pleasure to say that Lineage book three has been completed. I wish to thank the Registrars that assisted in providing applications in a timely manner so that the work could be completed. Mary

Glenn provided the flash drive that held the work of the 3 previous registrars General. Honorary Governor General Ann Garner had completed the lineage report of her entire term. Governor General Cher Sesma offered to provide the lineage

report of Registrar Robin Towns. The major change enacted by the Richmond Annual Council of accepting the

approved applications of other lineage societies enlarged the membership of The Continental Society during Registrar General Mary Glenn’s 2nd term. Lineage book Three lists the lineages from Application 1001 to 2320 . The lineage

book will be printed and is our hope that it will be ready for the September Annual Council. Unfortunately the Covid

pandemic made it difficult to locate local sources for printer ink which literally stopped the printer. As soon as the printing is completed the Governor General will receive a copy for proofing and the long process will be completed. It

has been an education learning about all of the ancestors and their service.

This officer also dealt with the cancellation of our Spring meeting in Washington DC. During long calls to the Army

Navy Club we were finally able to receive permission to move our deposit from 2020 to 2021. Our sponsor Honorary

Governor General Garner agreed to continue sponsoring our meeting and arrangements were secured for 2021 for our

April 1st meeting.

It has been a pleasure to serve in the Sesma Administration.

SECOND DEPUTY GOVERNOR GENERAL—Betty Samaras This officer has been at all meeting requested, and followed all instruction given by the Governor General. It has been a

pleasure serving in your administration and I am looking forward to the remaining part of your term.

CHAPLAIN GENERAL—Adele Bowyer It is this officer’s pleasure to report her attendance at the Annual Council meeting in Ontario, California where she conducted a Memorial Service.

This officer has prepared prayers for the Spring Council Meeting here in Washington, D.C. Attended the marking of the grave of Scarlet Crow, Tribal Chief of the Wahpeton Sisseton Sioux Tribe at Congressional

Cemetery.

This officer would like to remind Members, Chapter and State Officers to report deceased members to this officer in a

timely manner. The form is on the website. We do try to send cards to the next of kin when the death notice is received. Cards have also been sent when this officer has been made aware of an illness or death.

Madame Governor General it has been a pleasure to serve in this office during your administration.

RECORDING SECRETARY GENERAL—Patricia Gallagher This officer has been available to take minutes at all official meetings and electronic voting. Minutes were reviewed and

sent to the Governor for publications in the Calumet. All officers and chairman reports should be sent to the recording

secretary, the Governor and the Calumet editor as a permanent record of our organization. This officer attended the Annual Council meeting in Ontario, California and plans to attend the Board meeting in Washington DC.

It is and has been a pleasure to serve on the Sesma administration.

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY GENERAL—Mary W. Glenn This officer attended the Annual CSDIW meeting in Ontario, CA in September 2019. She has applied herself to the

duties of the office of Corresponding Secretary whenever directed by the Governor General. The CSDIW Database has

been kept up to date and distributed to the appropriate officers as directed by the Governor General.

This officer has also represented the General Society at the Tejas Chapter Meeting and the Texas State Society Meeting

in February 2020 I appreciate being able to serve.

ORGANIZING SECRETARY GENERAL—Barbara Allison This officer attended the April 2019 Spring Board of Management Meeting where she was elected as the Organizing

Secretary General.

In June she received an email from the Tennessee State Registrar, requesting information about forming a chapter in

Middle Tennessee. After answering this email, she waited until July 27th and sent an email asking if they needed any

help. Then on August 5th received another email requesting information about forming a chapter in Middle Tennessee. This time she said that she was the State President. Again this email was answered in a timely fashion.

This officer has been notified that the State of Iowa has problems. Only 7 members and NO Governor. So far they

haven't requested to be disbanded.

An email from our Governor for this officer to contact Karon Jarrard from the New Mexico State Society, as they are having problems. Karon's email was not listed and the telephone number listed was wrong so this officer could not

societies to be used as proof. There are guidelines that need to be followed when using an application from another society.

An article was written for the last Calumet outlining some of these procedures and standards. Please refer to it. Again – I will not accept merely the Index card for military service, especially for the War of 1812. You must order the complete

service record from the National Archives unless you also include additional proof that the ancestor actually engaged the

Native Americans or the regiment/militia was formed for the express purpose of Settler Protection.

Registrars – as you or your applicants search through their ancestry while preparing their applications, always keep an eye out for the “Indian connection.” What could this be?

Besides military service, here are some examples of activities that would qualify: Traded with the Indians, or received a license to do so, or went on hunting expeditions with the Indians

Bought land from an Indian, or allowed Indians to camp on their property Witnessed an Indian treaty

Stood as witness to an Indian marriage or baptism Owned or sold an Indian Slave Killed or was killed by an Indian or was captured by the Indians

Served as a witness for or against an Indian at trial, or sat on the jury, or swore out a legal complaint against an Indian.

Taught at or established an Indian School or was an Indian interpreter

Missionary or Sunday School teacher to the Indians

Had an Indian apprentice or employee Married or had children with an Indian

Served in a militia that was established to engage the Indians in warfare OR expressly serve as settler protection against the Indians (proof must be included)

Got in trouble for selling liquor to the Indians

And – don’t forget your FEMALE ancestors. Many, many of them interacted with the Indians in some way, especially

on the frontier.

We need three copies of all new applications and they must be printed front to back on two sheets of paper. The

applicant’s phone number AND email address must be provided, as this is an important part of our Society database. Please write them on the application.

ASSISTANT REGISTRAR GENERAL—Cielle Clemenceau This officer was contacted in February 2020 and asked to fulfill the term of Ora Jane Johnson. Plans were made to attend

the April 2020 meeting, but she will have to wait until the Annual Council in September to see everyone.

Several supplementals were sent directly to this officer, and Ms. Johnson mailed the other pending supplementals and all

the necessary instructions and tools needed to do the job successfully.

As of May 1, 2020 – this officer has reviewed all 19 supplementals submitted, with 14 being approved. The supplemen-

tal spreadsheet was updated, signed copies of the supplementals were mailed to the members, and digital copies were sent to the members, State Registrars, Registrar General, and Lineage Book Chairman. The Treasurer General has been

sent the checks for the approved supplementals, and the Calumet Newsletter Editor has received a listing of the approved

supplemenals for publication.

There were five submitted supplementals that had lineage or service issues that could not be resolved by this officer.

Two of these have been returned (at the request of the member), and the others are being held while the members collect additional documentation.

Most supplements received were well prepared, but a couple of reminders are necessary. Members should follow the guidelines established by the Registrar General. These are published on the website

and were in the January 2020 Calumet. Supplementals should be submitted with 3 signed copies, printed front-to-back.

When using a previously approved CSDIW application or supplemental, remember to include a hard copy. This

Page 27: Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars, Inc. CALUMET · Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars, Inc. CALUMET Newsletter June 2020 Governor General 2018—2020 Cheryl “Cher”

officer does not have access to all of the previously approved papers. Proofs should have all critical information underlined in red.

The member’s phone number and email address should be added on page 1. There is not a dedicated space for

this, so it must be written by hand.

The Supplemental Checklist that is to be sent with each supplemental has room for the State Registrar’s contact information. If your state has Chapters, please include the contact information for the Chapter Registrar.

When possible, this officer has done additional research to verify or add to the facts presented on a supplemental. If more

documentation or additional work is needed, this officer has contacted the member, explained the situation, and

requested additional information be sent.

The officer is available to answer questions from members or Registrars. Email is the best way to make contact.

This position has been a wonderful learning experience, and this officer is honored to be able to serve Governor General Sesma and her administration.

HISTORIAN GENERAL—Susan Moritz As Historian National I am keeping a scrapbook of the society. After the National Conference in Ontario, California the

scrapbook finally has some completed pages. Ladies, now is the time to tell the story of what your state society has accomplished in the past year. Now is your chance to “brag” about your good deeds. If you would like anything

included in the scrapbook, please send to me by August 1, 2020.

This officer looks forward to attending the next annual conference in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 17, 18, 19.

LIBRARIAN GENERAL—Helene Werner This officer was appointed in February 2020 as Librarian General.

CHAIRMAN REPORTS

AWARD CHAIRMAN—Lora McDaniel I was my pleasure to give out approximately 40 award certificates at the 31st Annual Council meeting in California in September 2019.

I hope this September in Las Vegas will have even more to give out! It is my honor to serve under Governor General

Cher Sesma.

BYLAWS CHAIRMAM—Nancy Kilbourn This committee was reformed the in February this year. Since then we have been hard at work.

We have completely revised the national bylaws and standing rules. And I must say the revised versions are clean, neat,

concise and beautiful. They will be printed in the June issue of the “Calumet.” Please review them carefully. You will

be voting on them at the September meeting.

I want to give an enormous thank you to the committee members for their diligence. And I also want to give a special

thanks to our National Parliamentarian Shirley Vanderbeck. Her expertise as a PRP was invaluable.

CALUMET NEWSLETTER CHAIRMAN—Judy Williams Hull This chairman is honored to serve in your administration and hopes everyone has enjoyed reading the Calumet Newslet-

ter. We continue to use Perrigo Printing located in Grand Rapids, MI. They have done a wonderful job printing and

distributing our newsletter. Watch for the June/July summer edition which is currently being prepared.

CURATOR—Betty “Betsie” Gricar Goad This Chairman attended the Annual Council meeting in California. She presented the Calumet to the Governor General

upon request. She has brought it back to Ohio for safe keeping until it’s trip to Washington D.C. for the April Board meeting. It is my pleasure to serve the Continental Society and Madam Governor General Sesma.

FINANCE COMMITTEE—Anne Farley As discussed at the September Assembly, the Finance Committee has been working to review compliance by state socie-

ties and chapters with IRS annual reporting requirements. After the September Assembly, the Committee was directed to gather the information needed to prepare an application to the IRS to establish an exempt group of subordinate state

Page 29: Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars, Inc. CALUMET · Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars, Inc. CALUMET Newsletter June 2020 Governor General 2018—2020 Cheryl “Cher”

societies and chapters.

A questionnaire was developed and sent to all state societies and chapters asking about their tax status and asking if they

wished to participate in a group exemption application. The IRS requires that only those state societies or chapters that affirmatively request to participate may be included in the group exemption application. Eighteen state societies and

chapters replied to the questionnaire, and thirteen have asked to join in the group exemption application. Unfortunately,

one state that asked to join is not technically able to do so at this time.

Of the twenty-one state societies and chapters that did not respond to the questionnaire, thirteen are submitting annual filings and can continue to do, and eight seem to have difficulties. The Committee has reached out to each of the eight

with difficulties to encourage their compliance.

The Committee drafted the required information to apply to the IRS to create an exempt group. The submission requires

a fee to the IRS of $2,000. The application materials were forwarded to the Governor General for signature and submis-sion to the IRS in late March.

The previous application submitted in January 2016 was returned without review, and there is no guarantee that this ap-

plication will be approved by the IRS. The primary benefit of an exempt group is that it will provide exempt status to

newly organizing societies. State societies and chapters that do not join in the initial application may be able to be added to the group in the future.

It is important to note that creating an exempt group will not resolve the status of states and chapters that have lost their exempt status, and they will need to either apply for tax exemption individually and pay the required fee, or they may

wish disband and organize as a new state society or chapter.

FINANCIAL REVIEW—Barbara Allison (No Report)

HANDBOOK CHAIRMAN—Rebecca Eisenman (No Report)

HOSPITALITY CHAIRMAN—Barbara Payne Aerni This Chairman has been working with the Nevada State Governor, Dr. Linda Miller, and her committee members regard-ing the upcoming Annual Council meeting to be held September 17-19, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

We have been coordinating materials and ideas to make the “second West Coast” Annual Council a success. Since we are setting precedent here, we want to make sure it’s done to everyone’s satisfaction, especially our Governor General!

Please make plans to come to Las Vegas and join us for 3 days of fun, seeing old friends and making new ones! The

meeting location details will be forthcoming from the Nevada State Society.

It has been an absolute honor and privilege to serve the Continental Society during the Administration of Cher Miller

Sesma.

website if you prefer to place your order that way. Please do not mail your order to this chairman, it slows the process down.

Upon receipt of your order, this chairman receives an email from Hamilton Insignia asking for approval of your order. Most of your orders are approved immediately, literally within 5 minutes of reading the email, yet occasionally they can

not be approved because more information is required. If you place an order for a chapter or state officers or chairman’s

pin that cannot be easily verified, please respond to emails or voicemails from this chairman in a timely fashion.

Approval cannot be given until proof is obtained.

Note: There are a lot of pins that are sold by the Society and not by Hamilton Insignia. If you don’t see a pin on Hamilton’s website for which you are looking, you may want to look in the Calumet or check the CSDIW website.

This chairman looks forward to approving many more insignia purchase orders in the coming months.

INSIGNIA ARCHIVES CHAIRMAN—Shari Kelley Worrell My report remains the same as my September 2019 Report.

On August 31st this chairwoman received the following description for her chairmanship from Madame Governor

General: “She stores the sashes and insignia of the deceased honorary Governors General that have been returned to the Society. If available, she will present the outgoing Governor General with a past Honorary Governor General Sash and/

or insignia. She will present two logs at the Annual Council in an election year to be used to transfer insignia from one officer to another. The outgoing officer form will have the following categories: date returned, outgoing officer name,

office, sash, insignia. The incoming officer form will have date received, incoming officer name, office, sash, insignia.

Officers must sign the form when receiving or returning insignia.”

1. No records were passed on during the Garner administration. 2. This chairperson has received no records or Insignia during this administration.

3. Officers’ Insignia were passed on to the incoming officers at their installation. This chairperson plans to attend the 2020 Annual Council to transfer Insignia to incoming Officers and sign the form she has created.

It was a pleasure to sponsor Madame Governor General for membership in The National Gavel Society and to serve the Continental Society as a Chairperson.

LINEAGE BOOK CHAIRMAN—Jessieanne H. Wells This chairman receives copies of approved applications from the Registrar General. These are used to add to our data-

base for the upcoming Lineage Book. Membership Number 2342 approved July 09, 2019 through Membership Number 2407 approved December 22, 2019 are being documented. Four supplementals were also received from the Assistant

Registrar General for inclusion.

GRAVE MARKERS CHAIRMAN— Peggy Comstock This chairman received two requests for markers. The first request came from Jane Gammon, who resides in Seffner, Florida. The request was for a marker for Lynea Joyce Warren D’Angelo, Continental Number 2127. The marker was

to be placed in the Georgetown Cemetery, Hudson Ville, Michigan.

The second request was from Frances Crabtree, Continental Number 1768 who resides in Stonewall Oklahoma. The

marker is to be placed at the Ada Oklahoma Memorial Park.

While processing the first request it was discovered that the information for the marking company, Best Stamp was out

of date. After several communications between myself, Mrs. Gammon and a representative from the Best Stamp Company all issues were finally resolved.

The Calumet editor was notified of the changes and verification that they have been made for the next issue was received.

MARKING AND PRESERVATION OF HISTORIC SITES CHAIRMAN—Barbara Aerni (No Report)

MEMBER AT LARGE CHAIRMAN—Kimberly Ormsby Nagy, MD The Continental Society currently has 49 members-at-large.

PROTOCOL CHAIRMAN—Frances Jakes (No Report)

REGISTRATION CHAIRMAN—Carol Steakly (No Report)

SCHOLARSHIP CHAIRMAN—Leslie Vander Meulen Richards Over the time since last summer’s scholarship awards, this chairman has continued to receive, via email, quite a few

inquiries about applying. Each was answered with the information to recheck the website or contact again in mid-March

to receive the 2020 application packet. So far, several have been sent to returning and new inquirers. The first date that applications are received was April first, and the applications must be received no later than mid-night June 15th. At that

time, judges will review all applications that meet the criteria and decide on the winners. We have three scholarships this year, $5,000 and two at $2500, which is great in this time of need for so many around the country.

This Chairman enjoys this position and appreciates the opportunity to once again serve in this capacity. Thank you to all Chapters and States which have so generously donated to the scholarship fund!

SCHOLARSHIP PINS CHAIRMAN—Susan Leininger This chairman is delighted to be able to send scholarship pins to those members who have made qualifying contributions

to the CSDIW Scholarship Fund. Thanks to the Governor General, a new shipment of the large running horse pins has

been received, so those donation pins are available once again.

Scholarship donations should be sent directly to this chairman, so that she may send out the scholarship pins in a timely

manner. The scholarship donation form has been revised to reflect this updated procedure.

Madam Governor General, it is a pleasure to serve in your administration.

SOCIAL MEDIA CHAIRMAN—Ora Jane Johnson CSDIW has a presence on Facebook and your chairman and serves as one of the admins of both groups:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/CSDIWPublic/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/CSDIWMembers/

The Members only group currently has 155 members and is growing every week – it’s so great to see those posts saying,

“Thank you for admitting me! I’m a brand new member.” Thanks to all chapters for getting the word out to your

applicants as soon as they are approved. In contrast, the Public group only has 13 members! Maybe that’s a good thing – all interested parties may just immediately submit applications.

SUPPLY CHAIRMAN—Helene Werner WOW!! Am I pleased to serve as your CSDIW Supplies chairman!!

During the 2019 California Annual Council, supplies were available, and sales over $4,000!! The NEW directories were a HOT item – this white binder includes our Handbook, Bylaws and Standing Rules, Ritual, 2019-2020 state officers and

member directory for $25.00 + shipping. Other items sold were our CSDIW banner and American flag set/base, Passive

Activities booklet, tote bags, 25-year anniversary pins (sorry, sold out), Organizing Member insignia plus Indian Head,

Calumet, Tomahawk, Feather and Tepee insignia.

ALL supplies have been replenished – we have NEW stock of tote bags, 2nd printing order of Directories, Tepee

(member must have proven Native American descent) and Organizing member pins.

Due to high shipping costs, our table size CSDIW banner and American flag (with base) will only be sold at Annual

Council and Spring-Board meetings. USPS, Fed Ex and UPS shipping costs continue to rise.

Besides attending the 2019 California Annual Council meeting, this chairman was present during the 2020 Georgia,

Florida and Michigan State Councils and this Spring-Board meeting - selling our supplies!

Members - please accept my appreciation for being so generous in your support of The Continental Society Daughters of

Indian Wars, Inc., purchasing over $4,500 in merchandise these past 9 months.

WEBMASTER CHAIRMAN—Beverly Baker In 2019, the national website, csdiw.org, was migrated to a new server and host. The site has a new look; we are using Wordpress which makes changes simple. The site is arranged with a MEMBERS ONLY selection from the menu bar.

The password for the Members only section may be obtained from this Chair by sending an email,

[email protected], along with your member number. The Governor General approves all changes to the site; if

you see a change necessary, please send the request to her and she will forward to me.

YEARBOOK CHAIRMAN—Karon Jarrard In September 2019, this Administration introduced a CSDIW binder containing Bylaws/Standing Rules, Handbook, Rit-ual and Yearbook. The binder was well received and by year end, orders had been filled for the initial order of binders.

Governor General Cher Sesma asked this chair to replicate the initial order and have the binders sent to Supplies Chair

Helene Werner.

This chair ordered 50 binders from Binders101.com, then printed and inserted the face page and spine identification into each binder. Cost of binders and Office Depot binders to accommodate extra copies received from printer totaled

$202.86.

This chair contracted with Any Budget Printing & Mailing, San Diego to print the job (color and black & white printing,

drilling, tabs and collation) costing $617.14.

This chair picked up the order from Any Budget, inserted contents into the waiting binders, and arranged delivery by UPS to Helene Werner in Florida. Any Budget charges totaled $211.17. Total cost of this job was $1,031.17 or approxi-

mately $19 per book.

Madam Governor General, thank you for the opportunity to serve the Society.

STATE GOVERNOR REPORTS

ALABAMA Governor Davie Thomas Williams

This Officer set her goals as increasing membership and education relative to the Indian Wars. Alabama State Society

presently has 60 members.

Our Annual meeting was held in Anniston, Alabama on May 23, 2019, and was well attended. She continues to recruit

and prepare papers for new members to increase the membership. The 990-PF has been filed.

This Governor and members participated in a “Tasting Tea” in Anniston, AL at the Anniston Public Library. The

purpose of the Tea was to raise funds for the Alabama Room at the Library and as recruitment for the different lineage organizations that participated.

This has been a unique year in the history of this organization. This Governor was unable to attend the National Annual Meeting in Greenville, SC, in October, due to its cancellation from the hurricane which hit SC.

Due to the Corona virus we are unable to have our state annual meeting in May. It is my wish that all Daughters stay

safe and we will be able to meet again in group meetings soon.

It has been an honor to serve as Governor of the Alabama State Society under the Sesma Administration.

ARIZONA Governor Joyce Pressley Wold

Arizona is increasing membership to our state. Thanks to Lynda Moreau, Registrar General, for getting those applica-

tions checked and put in the National system.

Branch meets with the National Society of New England Women and National Society Daughters of the Colonial Wars once a year. This has allowed sharing the venue and the increase interest of new members joining CDIW.

This officer is delighted to report a steady growth of members. One family member, thinking she would never be eligible for any lineage society, had help from her niece to find an ancestor. She didn’t have to go far as her grandfather immigrated from Germany, enlisted in the United States Army and ended in Arizona Territory. Well documented during

his service and interviews in person completed her 3-generation application for the Apache Wars 1861-1900. Her niece

and her 3 great nieces joined on the same ancestor. Newly member’s niece came to our meeting with a wonderful power

point about the life and travels of her great grandfather.

This state continues to support the Scholarship fund, Governor General’s project and Promoting objects of the Society.

ARKANSAS Governor Mary-Reid Warner

(See State / Provincial & Chapter News)

CALIFORNIA Governor Peggy Comstock

The California Members were honored to host the 2019 General Council Meeting. Due to the proximity of General

Council meeting date to the State Council meeting date it was agreed to begin the festivities with the State Council on Thursday and ending with the General Council on Saturday. Pictures of these events are attached to the report.

We were pleased to have Governor General Cher Sesma and Nevada State Governor Linda Miller attend our State

Council.

Besides supporting the Continental Avery Scholarship Fund, we also support a small Indian Tribe called the Wiyot in

Eureka, California. The Eureka City Council recently returned a portion of their land on Indian Island to this tribe. The

funds raised are to assist this tribe in restoring the island with a massive removal of many tons of scrap medal and garbage.

The California Society continues to grow with three chapters and 89 members. The latest member transferred into a

chapter from Members at large. We also have at least 6 prospective members that the Chapter Registrar’s are working to

have their papers approved. These papers are in various stages of being approved.

This State Governor was disappointed when the 2020 CSDIW Council was cancelled in April as she was looking

forward to attending.

The State Officers, Parliamentarian, Advisors and State Chairmen have all supported this officer in a tremendous way

and are so appreciated by me.

DISTRICT of COLUMBIA Governor Anne Caussin Henninger

The District of Columbia State Society continues to slowly grow. We welcomed new member Julia Williams in February 2020, our intrepid Registrar, Nicki Birch, is anticipating the arrival of a set of completed papers, and we have

six prospective members. This Governor has asked each member to be on the lookout for potential candidates for membership with a view toward expanding our membership base.

Unfortunately, due to the restrictions imposed by the rampaging COVID-19 virus, the grave marking originally scheduled for 1 April has been postponed until later this year. While we are hopeful this can be done in conjunction with

our annual meeting in mid-August, the scheduling will depend on the lifting of restrictions on gatherings and mobility.

The District of Columbia State Society is proud of our member, Adele Bowyer, who has served the Continental Society

as Assistant Registrar General and Chaplain General.

FLORIDA Governor Lila W Sandsrom

The Florida Society of Daughters of Indian Wars held their yearly meeting on February 7, 2020, at Embassy Suites, Lake

Buena Vista, Florida. New officers were elected and installed for the term of 2020-2022.

Upon election, this officer reported the new Florida Officers to the Governor General and the Corresponding Secretary

as required.

Membership will continue to be the focus of this administration. We are off to a good start with several referrals.

GEORGIA Governor Ann Bridges-Jones

The Georgia State Society had a very successful annual State Meeting at the Idle Hour County Club, Macon, Georgia on January 25, 2020. Thirty-seven Georgia Daughters and guest attended. We were honored to have Helene Werner, Con-tinental Supplies Chairman, attend.

First Deputy Governor, Jan Hogan, presented a most interesting program on American Indian Medicine sharing remedies of the Indians and the herbs and plants they used.

We are excited to have been approved to charter a new chapter in Georgia. This chapter will be the Kennesaw Chapter and will be in Marietta. Three new members have been welcomed making a total of 147 in our five chapters, increasing

membership is always one of our goals.

The Georgia Society Yearbook has been updated, with bylaws included, and distributed to the members.

Chapters donated generously to the National Scholarships.

The State Society is honored to have two Continental Officers General serve on the Executive Committee as well as two

Continental Chairmen. It is a privilege to serve as State Governor during your administration.

ILLINOIS Governor Susan Erlich

The Illinois Society currently has 50 members. We usually meet three times a year, but so far, we’ve had to cancel/postpone our March meeting, with guest speaker Sacagawea, and June’s field trip to the Trickster Museum and Gallery

in Schaumburg, IL is still a question mark.

Over the past year, members collected items for two boxes which were sent to an Air National Guard service man while

he was deployed to Kuwait. Donations were sent for the Continent Scholarship Fund, the General Fund and the

Governor General’s Project. Books have been ordered and are on their way to three Native American Schools and a

committee has been formed to go over the State Bylaws to make sure that we are in compliance with the National

Bylaws.

Last June, members and guests toured the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian in Evanston, IL. It has displays from Paleo-Indian times to the present, covering the United States and Canada. Lunch and the meeting were held at

Symphony’s Café.

The September meeting took place in East Peoria, IL during the 6th Annual IL Heritage Weekend. This involved joining

with other hereditary societies from across the state to share information and to obtain new members. Copies of the national pamphlet were passed out and members answered questions about our society. Next September, members and

guests will attend the 7th annual weekend and our slate of newly elected officers will be installed.

It is an honor to serve in your administration.

IOWA Governor Jodi Freet

(No Report)

KANSAS Governor Lavone Anglen

The Kansas Society has 21 active members. We lost our past Kansas governor, Beva Jean Lightner who died April 11,

2019 at the age of 90 years on April 11, 2019. We did not have a memorial service for her at the October 19, 2019 meeting as her member daughter Barbara Reese was unable to attend. We plan to have a memorial service for her at the

April 18, 2020 meeting.

We lost two other members for resignation Diana Turner for family reasons and another member for non-payment of

dues for health reasons. We did add another member LaDonna Scott and we have two other applications in the process

by our Registrar, Laura Easley for Judi Lester and Anne Mallinson.

We have had some really nice programs “Music Therapy Through the Ages” by Tiffany Black and Lavone Anglen gave

a program on her ancestor, Meyndertsz Van der Bogart, who discovered the Mohawk and Oneida territory, in New York.

Our society will meet at the Hereford House, in Lenexa, Kansas April 18, 2020 for lunch and a meeting. We sometimes have a field trip with our society planned in April, but we did not plan a field trip this year. Our past field trips were to the Eisenhower Museum and home, The Shawnee Mission Indian School and the Oz Museum in Wamego, Kansas.

We are looking forward to our meetings in 2020.

KENTUCKY Governor Jessieanne H. Wells

Our Society wreaths were presented at two society grave markings: Kentucky Society U.S.D. War of 1812 for four Real Daughters and one Real Granddaughter plus a joint marking for a Revolutionary War Soldier by NSSAR and Cox’s

Station Chapter, NSDAR.

At our last meeting, it was reported that we have 45 members with two additional applications in process. The Society

voted to donate $100.00 to a nurse scholarship in Lawrence, Kansas. Other recommendations will be considered in the

future.

The Kentucky Newsletter was sent to members with information about sending books to the Native American schools. Several of our members have already complied with this request. The Kentucky Arts Council (KAC) put out an invita-

tion to all American Indian Artists in Kentucky. The Arts Council decided they wanted to do an exhibition of American Indian Art and send this art around the Commonwealth. The exhibit will be called Native Reflections: Visual Art by

American Indians of Kentucky. Of the twenty-three pieces of Indian artwork chosen, two are by an Abenaki artist living

in Lexington, KY.

Our speaker scheduled for the May 2020 meeting will be presenting her program at our next meeting in November. Jeannie Hibbs Smith will be presenting her family lineage history going back to Chief Little Turtle, Miami Indian Tribe.

Michigan Society, CSDIW was one of five societies that held their Fall 2019 Heritage Days meetings in Owosso, MI.

Attendance improves as more societies hold joint gatherings.

Rituals were conducted and minutes of 21 August 2019 meeting were approved as submitted. Reports given by those

attending, with Treasurer’s report placed on file for audit. MI Society has one prospective member. Our state Librarian gave an extensive report on the History of Ruins near Globe, AZ. A copy of this report has been filed in state retention book with another copy to be included in the National Scrapbook.

MI Society held discussion regarding acquisition of a CSDIW Society lectern banner. Future vote to be by email. All state society bills were paid. State reports are being scanned and filed in state history books.

LOUISIANA Governor Cielle M. Clemenceau The Louisiana Society is staying strong with 28 members and several prospective members. We are proud to have 3

members serving as Continental Officers General and 2 members as Continental Chairmen during Governor General

Cher Sesma’s administration.

Five Louisiana members made the trip west for the Annual Council in California last September. We had a wonderful time and finished off the event with a donation to the National Scholarship.

Following the Annual Council, the Louisiana members were energized to support our state’s Native American communi-ties. In November, we were a sponsor for the annual PowWow of the Natchitoches Tribe in central Louisiana. This

was our first interaction with this group, and our donation put the Louisiana Society’s name on all the official signs, banners, posters, and t-shirts. It also introduced our society to tribal leadership and opened the door for us to become

more involved and potentially gain membership. We are truly fortunate to have two members of our state society who are registered members of the Natchitoches tribe. Plans to visit with the female members to find a project we can support in the future have been put on hold for now.

The Louisiana Society has had a long-running involvement with the Houma Nation of south Louisiana. In early Spring 2020, we continued this support with a donation to their Vocational Rehabilitation Program. This program offers

employment services for the United Houma Nation and the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana. Services provided include

medical and psychological evaluations, vocational testing, career counseling, training, and job placement assistance. We

are honored to have two members who are members of the Houma Nation.

Our Spring meeting has been left unscheduled due to the restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 virus and the hard

toll it has taken on Louisiana. The Louisiana Society hopes to schedule a social gathering – if not a formal meeting – during the summer for us to catch up on both Society business and friendships.

Louisiana members are looking forward to the 2020 Annual Council in Las Vegas.

MARYLAND Governor Margaret Stromberg

The Maryland Society of CSDIW has had a productive year. We have 44 very enthusiastic members including two new members.

Our June meeting found us in Glen Echo, Maryland for a tour of the Clara Barton House. We learned that she was an amazing woman and continued to aid disaster victims long after the Civil War was over. After the tour we adjourned to

the Irish Pub for lunch and meeting. The members were so impressed that a $200 donation was sent to the National Park Service for the upkeep of the house.

Our January meeting was held at the Olive Garden in Fairfax, VA. Allison Hoopes presented a very interesting program on her two ancestors David Brown and Doctor (his name, not his title!) Brown, father and son who were taken hostage

by the Iroquois at the time of the Revolution.

We continue to support the library at Red Cloud School in South Dakota. Our donation of $200.00 dollars for books

about Native Americans was well spent as the librarian sent us the list of the books she was able to purchase for the children. She also sent us pictures of the library and a beautiful calendar of children in classic Native American dress.

MICHIGAN Governor Helene Werner

Michigan Society, CSDIW was one of five societies that held their Fall 2019 Heritage Days meetings in Owosso, MI.

Attendance improves as more societies hold joint gatherings.

MI Society held discussion regarding acquisition of a CSDIW Society lectern banner. Future vote to be by email. All state society bills were paid. State reports are being scanned and filed in state history books.

This year, MI Heritage Days participated in the “Treat Her Like a Lady” initiative for female veterans. Donations of woman’s toiletry items may include but are not limited to - shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, feminine hygiene products,

hair products, body wash and lotion. All placed in a sealed, one-gallon bag.

The 2020 Spring Heritage Days gathering scheduled for 5 June 2020 in Grand Rapids was cancelled due to the Global

Pandemic.

MISSOURI Governor Leslie Richards

The Missouri Council currently has 35 members, one of which is a recent transfer to us from the Arkansas Society. We meet two times per year with another lineage society and that was the case this past February. We had a program on the

Cherokee Indians of the American Revolution. Also held was a business meeting with reports. Due to the Corona Virus situation we are not sure when we will meet again, but if all goes as predicted at this time, our Society will hold its

annual meeting with elections in July. Hopefully by then the country will be healthy and back to a bit more normal activity will be possible. Currently increasing membership is our most critical task as we have too many members who either live too far away or are not able to attend meetings as in the past. We are pleased that we recently received

another Feather Pin in recognition of our recent donation to the Scholarship Committee. As this officer is the National Scholarship Chairman, donating to the Scholarship program is a priority for our Society.

NEVADA Governor Dr. Linda Miller

After returning from the CSDIW National Conference in September we were involved in several community events.

This officer and other members went to the Indigenous Peoples Festival in Las Vegas at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park to get ideas from the artisans there. This officer performed as Hele J. Stewart, the founding mother of

Las Vegas at the state designated Sarah Winnemucca Day at the Old Fort. As a contemporary of Sarah Winnemucca, I explained the similarities between the two pioneering women and their relationships with the Paiutes from 1860-1890.

This officer also conducted a workshop for the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers to explain how to become members. This officer also attended two events regarding the Mayflower 400 and explained how they can also become members. This

officer also paid $1000 to conserve a 1617 book on Virginia which contains information on “the christening of

Powhatans daughter and her marriage to an English man.” It is available at the Library of Virginia in Richmond.

The main focus has been planning our state conference and the national conference. The Nevada State Conference is August 22 in Las Vegas at the historic West Side School. Since it is near the Paiute reservation, we will have a spokes-

person from the Paiute Tribe.

The National Conference will be in Las Vegas September 18-19. The activity day will include a trip to the Old Las

Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park. Here we will have activities by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers who are descen-

dants from the original Mormon setters at the fort. The Buffalo Soldiers give us insights into what their descendants did in helping pioneers. Then there will be Native American artisans with crafts for sale. Navajo tacos will be served for

lunch. In the afternoon is a trip to the National Atomic Testing Museum for a tour.

The conference on September 19 will be hosted by the NATM museum. The luncheon speaker will be Tommy Flores, a

member of the Winnemucca clan who will talk about Sarah Winnemucca. The state pin will feature Sarah Winnemucca. Funds from the sale the pin will go to the Nevada State Museum Las Vegas Education department to prepare a high

school level student trunk on Native Americans in Nevada from the Anasazi to the Paiutes.

The banquet speaker will be Richard Dalton (who this officer met at a Mayflower meeting) who is the Nevada State

Historian for the Mayflower Descendants. He will have just returned from the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower. All

the speakers represent groups that can become potential members of the society.

This officer also has been working on getting approval for a CSDIW marker at the sites of our events. These include the

Nevada Test Site which was formerly Native American land. The other is the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort which was

the site of the Mormon Settlement from 1855-57 where the Mormons were involved in missionary work with the Native Americans.

The hotel rooms will be held at the Tuscany which is two blocks from the National Atomic Testing Museum. A shuttle

will be provided for those who need transportation. Reservations are open.

Each one will take home a tote filled with Native American items and books about the sites. Please come and enjoy all

the events that we have planned.

SOUTH CAROLINA Governor Mari R. Noorai

The Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars State of South Carolina (CSDIWSSC) has continued to celebrate its

twenty-fifth anniversary of its chartering.

SC Governor Mari Noorai enjoyed representing CSDIWSSC at the 31st Annual Council in Ontario, California. She

learned much, and she returned to South Carolina full of valuable information and new ideas.

Membership of CSDIWSSC has continued to grow under the leadership of State Registrar Dianne Culbertson and State Membership Chair Sarah Jane Armstrong; since our Annual Meeting last August, CSDIWSSC has welcomed five new

members. We have several prospective members completing applications at this time, and State Registrar Culbertson has recently mailed one completed application to the Registrar General.

The South Carolina State Librarian Denise Lane took the lead, encouraging South Carolina members to answer the

Librarian General Helene Werner’s call to action to support the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. CSDIWSSC

voted to donated $100 to the Book Wish List of the 3 Oglala Sioux Reservation Elementary Schools.

CSDIWSSC continues to work with a local historian to help preserve the Cherokee heritage of the Upcountry of South

Carolina, by marking the historic Lower Cherokee Town of Seconne.

This March 14, 2020 marked CSDIWSSC first-ever virtual field trip; although members and prospective members

gathered at Seabrook Island Club, local Naturalist Dennis Chastain provided the program from his home in the Upstate of South Carolina. SC Governor Mari Noorai facilitated the virtual experience; members enjoyed learning about the historic Cherokee Path that led from the village of Keowee, in South Carolina’s Upcountry, more than 250 miles

southeast to Charleston.

This coming November 11, 2020, CSDIWSSC will be represented by member Kathleen de Jonge at the official dedica-

tion of the National Native American Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.

It is a privilege to serve as a State Governor during your administration.

TENNESSEE Governor Jo Hill

(No Report)

TEXAS Governor Lisa Kight Alcala’

The Texas Society has had a very productive year. Our membership in the Texas Society is 103 members at the time of

our Annual State Meeting in September 2019. We have gained 6 new members but have unfortunately lost two

members to death in 2019 and two members have resigned. This leaves us with a net gain of 2 members, so we are truly

growing!

At our Annual State Meeting, discussion was introduced regarding the possibility of reverting to a State Society only and

dissolving the current chapters. As chapters conduct their chapter meetings immediately prior to our two state meetings, some members felt it will broaden the pool of members able to serve as state society officers as well as gaining some

valuable time for the other societies that meeting following our Indian Wars meetings in September and February.

Chapter governors were instructed to poll their members and reported at the semi-annual meeting in February 2020.

Our newest chapter, Payaya, and the Geronimo Chapter members expressed their desire to remain as chapters while Tejas and Angelina chapters would be willing to merge. A vote of the members at our Annual Meeting in August 2020 will be held regarding this issue. A nominating committee was elected in September 2019 and a new slate of officers

will be elected and installed at our Annual Meeting in August 2020.

At our Annual Meeting in September 2019, members voted to donate a total of $700 to the St. Joseph School and the Friends of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation group which will be used by both groups for food and school supplies.

Members continued their support to the Pine Ridge Reservation school children in February 2020 by voting to contribute

$50 per chapter and $150 from State Society funds to purchase every book on the Pine Ridge Reservation wish list sent

to the State Societies by our Governor General Mrs. Sesma.

Members at the Annual Meeting also approved a comprehensive revision of the State Society Bylaws. Most of the revi-

sions were made to bring our state bylaws in line with our Continental Society bylaws and the common practices and

procedures which the Texas Society currently utilize in conducting our meetings and the business of our Texas Society.

State Governor Mrs. Kight Alcala’ distributed the 990 tax exemption information request and forms to all chapters for their submission to Mrs. Ann Farley so that the Continental Society will be able to re-establish their tax exempt status

through the filing of 990 forms and include all chapters under the Continental Society umbrella., State Treasurer Janet Kres has submitted the required documentation to Mrs. Farley and chapters have been instructed to consult with Mrs.

Kres if they have any problems with submitting their documentation to Mrs. Farley.

At our semi-annual meeting in February 2020, members also voted to donate $200 from the State Society and $100 from the Geronimo chapter to the Continental Society Scholarship fund. At our Annual State Meeting in September of 2019,

we memorialized eight beloved daughters who passed away between 2016-2018 including daughters Carolyn Ericson, a notable genealogist and the compiler and publisher of many genealogical books that I know many have benefited from,

and Mrs. Neva Jean Barnhill who was an energetic and enthusiast supporter of American Indians and was well known

for her presentations in Native dress encouraging all members to support our American Indian programs and activities.

Madam Continental Society Governor Mrs. Sesma, it is a pleasure to serve you and our Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars.

VIRGINIA Governor Lila Housden

I hope this finds you well during this unique and challenging time in our history. I am thinking today, that under normal

circumstances, I would be doing my last-minute packing for my trip to Washington, D.C. for Heritage Society Season. I will miss seeing so many dear friends this year.

The South Branch Society NSSDP joined with the Virginia Society Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars for a joint meeting on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Spotswood Country Club in Harrisonburg, VA. We invited guests

from numerous local societies. We were delighted to have guests from DAR on the local, district, and state levels.

Colonial Dames XVII were well represented. Both Daughters and Sons of the Confederacy joined us. Members of

Daughters of American Colonists were with us, as well. Our total attendance was 58. We were hosted by the Rocking-ham Riflemen Chapter, United States Daughters of 1812 who provided a wonderful luncheon.

It came as a surprise that most of our guests had never heard of our society. We had hoped our joint meeting might spur interest in CSDIW and I’m pleased to say several of our guests have contacted VA CSDIW regarding membership.

The South Branch NSSDP Deputy Governor, Charles Poland, presented an interesting program on “The Indian Wars in Virginia”. Mr. Poland took numerous questions from the audience. We thoroughly enjoyed his program.

We are pleased to report Virginia membership stands at 66 daughters. Our business included donations and a check to

the Native American Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. We received a lovely thank you letter for our generous donation We will continue to support the Native American Veterans Memorial. The dedication ceremony for the

memorial is scheduled for November 11, 2020 and will provide the opportunity for all Americans to recognize the sacrifices and ongoing contributions of its Native American citizens who have served.

I can hardly believe my term in coming to a close this fall. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as the Governor of Virginia Daughters of Indian Wars. This is a lovely group of warm and welcoming daughters. I will always treasure the

support I have received from Virginia and National CSDIW.

As I complete this note on Good Friday, I pray that each of you and yours will be safe and well. Now may the Lord of

peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.

ARKANSAS Governor Mary-Reid Warner

Our members have been busy. In February we attended the 16th annual George Washington Luncheon at the Hot Springs

Country Club. This annual event to honor our first president was founded by Col. Duane Vandenberg and his wife, Peggy in 2003. Most all the lineage societies were represented to hear Dr. Terry Carter of Ouachita Baptist University

speak on “George Washington’s Faith.” Several of our members were spotlighted including Peggy Vandenberg, Sheila

Beatty-Krout who was the master of ceremonies and Judy Coleman who led the opening prayer and the blessing.

(Seated: Mary Jean Hall, Sheila Beatty-

Krout, Mary-Reid Warner, Sally Johnson,

Vandenberg, Dr. Terry Carter, Maralou

Spear, Teresa Clark and Judy Coleman)

Our main goal this year is to produce a

Lineage Book of our ancestors. In 1995-2008 this was the project of our former

Governor Jean Pollard and was com-

piled by MarJo Dill. We are now gather-

ing data on those who have become members since 2008 and encouraging

them to write about their ancestors. The

book will include the officers who have

served since then and tell more of our

history.

Sheila Beatty-Krout developed a certifi-

cate for those who have proven descent

through an Indian ancestor. Five of our

ladies received this special document. They are Jean Fricke, Wanda Chamberlin, Sheila Beatty-Krout, Betty Harp and Catherine Fortney. We now have thirty-four members and are pleased to serve AR CSDIW.

OHIO Governor Betty “Betsie” Goad

It is a pleasure to report that Ohio Society continues to grow and currently has 44 members with 6 prospective members.

We hold three meetings a year in various locations around the state. Our hostess in each area has found great locations

and has shared amazing treats and gifts with our members. Since the Ohio report in September, our Society has met at

the National First Ladies Library and the Saxton McKinley House in Canton. Our tour guide was one of our prospective

members. She explained the evolution of the role of the First Lady. The Saxton McKinley House was the residence of

President and Ida Saxton McKinley. Our next meeting was at the Knox County Historical Museum. Our speaker on Prehistoric Cultures of Knox County and their artifacts has also become a prospective member. Our project this year

will be to continue to donate school supplies to Native American Indian Center in Columbus, OH. We also have

selected "Adopt a Native Elder Program" as our new project. We hope to help supply a native

elder with food, medication, fire-

wood, etc. Ohio has a new slate

of officers to be elected at our Annual meeting in May. This

Governor is grateful to have served the Ohio Daughters and

this administration.

SOUTH CAROLINA Governor Mari R. Noorai

The Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars State of South Carolina (CSDIWSSC) held its Spring Field Trip and

luncheon at the Seabrook Island Club on March 14, 2020.

This meeting had our first-ever virtual program for members to learn about the historic Cherokee Path that led from the

village of Keowee, in South Carolina’s Upcountry, more than 250 miles southeast to Charleston. Local naturalist Dennis

Chastain has done substantial research to rediscover parts of the path that are still in existence. SC Governor Mari

Noorai facilitated the virtual field trip, and members enjoyed learning from Dennis Chastain although he could not be with the group in person.

Member Kathleen de Jonge will represent CSDIWSSC at the dedication of the National Native American Veterans Memorial: Honoring the Military Service of Native Americans in Washington, DC this coming November 11, 2020.

At this meeting, CSDIWSSC voted to support Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation by providing $100 for the Book Wish

List for the three Oglala Sioux Reservation Elementary Schools.
