In today’s business world, online social networking can play a significant role in your career and in the long term wealth of your company. It is important to realize this and take advantage of the opportunities this type of networking can open up for you. So what exactly is social networking in a professional context? Social networking is simply the expansion of social connections with the intent of creating beneficial relationships that can help you grow professionally. It is easy to see how this can make a positive impact.

Creating relationships with the right people can make a vast difference in generating qualified leads and indentifying lucrative business prospects. Networking can help advance your career by creating contacts with upper level management, for instance. This type of connection provides a platform for you to submit creative ideas and comments for generating direct discussion. It has the same effect for companies as well. Connecting with people from related companies can open up the potential for collaboration on projects. It is important to know that most social networking takes place online, which allows relationships to build more quickly. Here’s what T.A. McCann, CEO of Gist, had to say about online social networking:

“Ten years ago, ‘networking’ was done in restaurants, bars, on the phone and at confer-ences. Today the majority of networking occurs online, in tweets, e-mails, LinkedIn invites, and more. To put it bluntly, the difference between networking in 1995 and networking today is about two hours less face time.”

McCann goes on to say, “For instance, you can initiate a rela-tionship with a mere tweet on Twitter or a comment on a blog post that shares an opinion or compliments someone. The tweet or comment only takes a matter of seconds, and you’re off and running with the start of a new relationship. The other party will remember you, and is beginning to value your opinions.”

Social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, connect people within any given industry. These types of sites are great for displaying and sharing professional and personal experience or interests. Signing up and creating a profile on any of these sites is simple and convenient; all that is needed is an email account. Creating a profile involves follow-ing some short steps and filling in the blanks. Most people have already established personal accounts on these sites, but not everyone is using them appropriately.

When connecting with industry professionals through these sites, it is necessary to make a good impression. For example, many people who have Facebook accounts typically have pro-file pictures that are hilarious to friends but seem odd or make a negative impression on business professionals. People who are interested in connecting with others for business purposes should allow themselves to show their personality to others, but they should also aviod making the wrong impression by posting

questionable photos or status updates that may make business professionals or even potential employers think negatively of them.

Regardless of the type of industry you work in, social networking can be a valuable tool. To learn more about social networking online, Continuing Education offers these courses: Introduction to So-cial Media, Marketing Using Social Media, Integrating Social Media in Your Organization, and Facebook for Business (pgs 4-5). The first three courses listed above comprise a Social Media for Business Certificate.

Registration information can be found on-line at www.ColumbusState.edu/CE or call 706.507.8070.

"I own JNP Fitness, a company dedicated to helping people lose unwanted pounds, gain muscle tone, and improve their overall health and appearance.

Like many people, I began to struggle with body image and weight gain after my children were born. I was tired all the time and didn’t like the way I looked in the mirror.

I originally took the Personal Trainer Certification course at Columbus State University Continuing Educa-tion to learn more about how to con-trol my own weight and nutrition. As a result, I lost 30lbs and gained a love for fitness. I now have more energy, like the way my clothes fit, and want to help others feel the same way.

Now, I own a thriving business as a Personal Trainer where I am able to customize programs that help others meet their individual fitness needs.

Thank you Continuing Education for offering the Personal Trainer Certifi-cation program. It is changing lives for the better!"
