Dental demographics point to the inescapable conclusionthat during the next 20 years there will be a huge surge inadvanced adult dental restorative needs and a decliningnumber of dentists with adequate training to meet theneeds. The general dentist will be at the forefront of thiscrisis. It is imperative that he/she be adequately preparedfor the busiest time of his/her professional life.

The general dentist is first and foremost a restorativedentist. One needs to continually ask, “Am I providingthe best dental care for my patients?” Reap great rewardsfor you and your patients by developing your niche nowand sticking to it.

• Develop strong restorative skills and knowledge. This isa lifetime pursuit with ever-evolving technology andmaterials. Become a lifetime student of advancedrestorative procedures. Attend on-going CE programsor a prosthodontic specialty program. It is never too late. The great advantage of specialty training is developingthe skill of critical thinking and putting it all togetheron comprehensive cases. Mouths break down for twoprimary reasons – biological or mechanical. Control thebiologic breakdown and master the mechanics of thestomatognathic system. Dental implants are now anintegral part of restorative dentistry. Learn the benefitsof 3-D radiographic information, digital photography, and proper laboratory support. Our approach to asingle anterior implant case is basically the same as to afull mouth implant case. With implant dentistry, thereis just more initial planning.

• Present and accomplish procedures within your trainingand comfort level. Don’t get lured into biting off morethan you can chew, sometimes it bites back. Work withtrained specialists on more complex, comprehensivecases. There are plenty of the routine, highly predictableprocedures to keep you busy and prosperous. Too often, the restorative doctor makes inappropriate surgical callsand the surgeon makes inappropriate restorative calls.

• Implant dentistry is changing our basic approach to oralrehabilitation. Think in different terms when it comesto prognosis, site preparation, esthetics, occlusal forces, materials, prosthetic longevity and patient satisfaction. With proper planning and execution, dental implantsare enjoying a remarkable, superior final result ascompared to dealing with failing teeth. Lean where-to,how-to, when-to, and when-not-to.

To enhance your restorative-implant skills, come learnfrom two of the area’s finest prosthodontists,Dr. Frank E. Seaman and Michael G. Wiley. Thisone-day course will review implant supportedremovable as well as fixed prosthetic restorations.
