The Master Mentor Program is a certificate program preparingAmerican Sign Language professionals to serve as mentors.

Mentors are experienced professionals and specialized edu-cators who provide guidance, support, and direction to newlygraduating and less experienced professional incumbents atall skill levels.

Mentors guide adult learners in a process of professionalself-discovery, helping them make the transition from educa-tion programs to the working environment. Mentoring I - August 10 - October 11, 2015The objective of level one is not for students to learn mentoring bylearning what others know about it. After starting out with somegrounding in the field, students work with a range of materials andexperiences in order to develop their own deeper personal under-standing of mentoring. The purpose of the survey is to help themproduce their own maps for exploring their future work in the field.

Mentoring II - October 12 - December 13, 2015The course begins with an exploration of current research into lan-guage reception, processing and production and the part played bylanguage skills in the complex task of interpretation. Students focuson locating error patterns that novice interpreters display and thenlearn how to feed this perspective into assessment and skill devel-opment activities. During the course, students alternate in the rolesof mentor and mentee as they practice assessment and interactivementoring feedback skills with their peers in the on-line courseenvironment. As they do so, they are asked to pay particular atten-tion to the processes and possibilities of distance mentoring usingchat rooms and on-line group discussion capabilities.

Mentoring III - January 4 - March 13, 2016The course focuses strongly on the skill enhancement aspects of amentor's work. Students are introduced to the theory and practice ofmeaning-based approaches to promoting interpreter development.

Mentoring IV - March 14 - May 15, 2016The main focus for students in the course is to carry out their indi-vidual fieldwork projects successfully. In addition, students con-tinue their exploration of portfolio as a mentoring tool, by com-piling the mentorship component of their portfolios. Students arealso expected to reflect on their overall progress in becoming mastermentors as they apply their skills and insights to independent work.

I am currently about halfway through the program and have been pleasantlysurprised. The classes are excellent and the instructors are well versed in thesubject matter of the classes they teach. The continuing education staff arealways there to assist with questions about the classes, books, etc. I recom-mend this program to anyone interested in a great educational experience.
