May 13, 2013 Continuing the Celebration of National Nurses and Health Care Professionals Week Last week, we celebrated our SJH nurses. This week, we recognize our SJH employees in honor of National Health Care Professionals Week. Here are more stories from our SJH family on what inspired them to work in health care: “My inspiration to work in health care came from several places. My first experience occurred when working at Hoag Hospital. I was inspired with the commitment of the staff. Later, I worked for a home health agency and saw the significant impact on what it meant for a patient to be cared for in their home. When I began at St. Joseph Hospital, Orange in the social services office, it furthered my appreciation of patient care. Working at the system office has further expanded my insight on health care. Although I don’t have a clinical background, I have seen the healing affect from many different services for our communities.” Alix Worden, administrative assistant, advocacy, SJH “There were two pivotal moments in my life that solidified my calling to work in health care. In my twenties, I was diagnosed with two forms of unrelated cancer, and became a “professional patient” for many years as I underwent chemotherapy, radiation and multiple surgeries. Then, in my thirties, my younger brother overdosed and passed away, and my family went through an emotional process of organ donation. In both of these situations, I witnessed miraculous, compassionate care and extreme kindness by doctors, nurses and hospital workers, and I knew that I wanted to give back by working at an organization that touches lives so deeply and profoundly.” Jennifer Marquez, director of corporate communications, marketing & communications, SJH “My grandfather was a general surgeon and I always admired what great bedside manner he had and how he helped so many people. During college, I worked as a file clerk at a doctor’s office. I found health care so interesting and I loved interacting with the patients. After I graduated, my eyes were opened to the business side of health care. I found it fascinating! I have never thought about working in any other industry. It’s ever changing and always interesting – I love it.” Katie Swenson, project manager, strategic services, SJH “While studying theology and social work in college, I interned at a hospital in spiritual care. I loved my internship and training as a chaplain, and I was motivated by the dedica- tion and compassion of everyone who worked there. Being in Catholic health care for more than 30 years, I am continually in- spired and encouraged by the creativity and commitment of my coworkers who carry out the healing ministry of Jesus.” Beth McPherson, vice president, mission integration, SJH Click here to read more inspirational stories from our SJH family along with last week’s health care stories. Weight Watchers at Work Program at Park Place Achieve your wellness goals and come to a

Weight Watchers at Work open house meeting to

see if the Weight Watchers program is right for you.

The half-hour meeting will take place tomorrow, May 14, at 11:30 a.m. in the Mother

Lirette Francis conference room (1A/1B) on the first floor at Park Place.

Please accept the Outlook meeting request that was sent on May 8 if you are interested in

attending. For questions, contact Joyce Spidle, revenue cycle services, at

[email protected].

Not located in Park Place? We also have a Weight Watchers at Work program located at the St. Joseph Center (Motherhouse). Please contact Peggy Marcantel, human resources manager, St. Joseph Center, at [email protected] if you’re interested in attending.

The game is simple: Four human resources

representatives will start the game and give

you a pen and a disposable camera.

Your goal: Find someone within the system

office you don’t already know and learn his

or her name and department.

Take a photo of your new friend and ask,

“What makes your department unique?”

Fill out the form with his or her response.

When you are finished, pass the camera and

form along to the person you just connected with to keep the game going.

Remember to make your 2013 benefit selections by Saturday, May 18. Action is required before this deadline if you want to:

Change your current options

Enroll (or re-enroll) in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) plan

Change your covered dependents (if applicable)

If action is not taken during the open enrollment period, your current benefit elections will remain in effect through June 30, 2014 unless you experience a qualified change in status. However, this does not apply to FSA plans, which require re-enrollment each year. Please note in addition to some of the changes highlighted below, a complete list of all ministry-specific changes was mailed to your home. To view the plan changes, click here and scroll to page 3.

Physicians in Monarch Healthcare will no longer be available in

the Select Network HMO Plan. Employees enrolled in this plan with a Monarch physician as their primary care physician (PCP) will need to change their PCP with CIGNA before May 15, 2013. If the PCP change is not completed by this deadline, CIGNA will change the PCP to get new ID cards out to employees by July 1. Find a physician by visiting everymomentmatters.org/Doctors.

You’ll notice the out-of-pocket maximum for individuals and

families will increase, as will the cost of doctor visits, inpatient and outpatient hospital procedures and visits, and emergency room treatment.

The price of prescriptions will also go up, but you can save

money by using generic brands. You will be able to order a 90-day supply of maintenance medication by mail at a reduced cost.

Questions about enrollment? The Benefit Service Center is available by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To speak with a benefits representative, call (800) 306-4363.

2013 Open Enrollment: May 3 – 18
