Installation and connection

Installation kitThe supplied installation kit contains twobrackets, screws, a power supply ca-ble and an IR receiver with a 3.5 mmjack plug.

Installation and safety noticesBefore connecting your DVD PlayerME4, please read the following informa-tion carefully.

The battery’s negative terminal mustbe disconnected for the entire timeit takes to install and connect thedevice.

When doing so, you must observe thevehicle manufacturer’s safety notices(airbags, alarm systems, trip comput-ers, immobilizers).

When installing the ME4, select a loca-tion in the vehicle that allows you to at-tach it firmly into place using screws.The installation location should be suchthat the ME4 does not get in the way ofthe driver and cannot endanger the oc-cupants in the event of the vehicle sud-denly coming to a halt, for instance,during an emergency stop.

Never place the remote control withinthe inflation range of airbags and makesure that the remote control is storedsecurely so that it cannot injure the ve-hicle occupants in the event of an emer-gency stop.

You must take the following into accountwhen selecting the installation location:

- The vehicle tank must not be dam-aged by screws.

- There must be no wires or pipesrunning beneath the surface onwhich you want to install the de-vice.

- The spare wheel, tools, etc. mustnot be damaged by the screws.Please also make sure that the de-vice does not restrict access to thespare wheel, tools, etc.

Do not install the device in any locationthat is:

- subjected to direct sunlight.

- near warm air outlets (heating,etc.).

- subjected to rain or moisture.

- subjected to dust or dirt.

- subjected to strong vibrations.

For installation in the dashboard (1 DINcompartment), please use the suppliedmounting sleeve.

To ensure the device is installed secure-ly, make sure you only use the suppliedmounting components (brackets,screws).

ConnectionsConnect the free ends of the suppliedconnection cable to your vehicle’s pow-er supply.

Yellow: Continuous positive powersource 12V

Black: EarthRed: Ignition

The continuous positive power cablebetween the battery and the ME4 mustadditionally be protected directly at thebattery with a fuse holder (5 amperes).

Plug the connector plug into the 4-pinsocket on the left-hand side of the de-vice.

You can connect the infrared receiverfor the remote control to the REMOTESENSOR 3.5 mm jack plug. The infra-red receiver can then be installed any-where in the vehicle.

Note:If you have not installed the ME4 in aconcealed location in the vehicle, youcan also point the remote control directlyat the front of the device.

For audio/video playback, connect theAUDIO/VIDEO OUT and DIGITAL OUTcable connections to the appropriateinputs of your system.

Additionally, you can connect externalaudio/video sources to this set of ca-bles (AUDIO/VIDEO IN). For furtherdetails, read the chapter entitled “Ex-ternal sources”.

Switching on/offThe device is ready for operation whenthe device’s CD compartment lights upblue.

➮ To switch on the device, press the POWER button 1 on the re-

mote control or the button 1 onthe device.

The device switches on.

➮ To switch off the device, press the POWER button 1 on the re-

mote control or the button 1 onthe device.

The device switches off.

Using for the first timeIf you are using the ME4 for the firsttime, you must insert the batteries intothe remote control.

Using the remote control for thefirst time

Inserting the batteries1. Open the battery compartment by

detaching the lid.

2. Insert the new batteries. Batterytype: two AAA-type batteries. Makesure the battery terminals are posi-tioned as shown in the diagram inthe battery compartment.

3. Close the battery compartment.

Using the remote controlPoint the remote control at the sepa-rate infrared receiver or at the infraredreceiver on the front of the device.

Angle of operation: approximately 30˚in all directions from the front of the IRreceiver.

DVD modeYou can use the ME4 to play DVDs, vid-eo CDs (VCD), super video CDs(SVCD), standard audio CDs and pho-to CDs (VCD 2.0, see page 48) as wellas MP3-CDs.

These operating instructions refer tousage with DVDs. The button functionsfor playing audio CDs are the same.

The ME4 is designed to play DVDs withregional code 2. If the device is de-signed for use with other regional codes,labels at the back of these instructionsand on the device will inform you of this.

CD-Rs and CD-RWs (CDs that youhave “burned” yourself) can generallyalso be played. Due to the varying qual-ity of CDs, Blaupunkt cannot guaran-tee that they will work properly.

To ensure the system functions proper-ly, only use CDs labelled with the com-pact disc logo. Problems might be ex-perienced when trying to play copy-pro-tected CDs. Blaupunkt cannot guaran-tee the proper functioning of copy-pro-tected CDs!

Media that you have burned yourself(such as VCD/SVCD and DVD-R/RW,DVD+R/RW) can generally be played.Depending on the writable mediabeing used and the software used tocreate and write data onto thesemedia, Blaupunkt cannot provideany guarantee for complete compat-ibility or flawless playback.

Adjusting the volumeYou can adjust the volume in steps from0 (off) to 16 (maximum).

➮ To increase the volume, press theVOLUME + button G.

➮ To decrease the volume, press theVOLUME - button G.

Volume muteYou can instantaneously reduce thevolume (mute).

➮ Press the MUTE button F.

“MUTE” appears on-screen.

Cancelling mute

➮ Press the MUTE button F again.

Inserting/removing a DVD/CDThe ME4 has a slot-in drive without atray. It is only possible to achieve gooddamping of the vibrations of the drive inthe device if slot-in drives are used.

Inserting a DVD/CD

➮ Insert the DVD/CD with the printedside uppermost into the DVD/CDcompartment at the front of the de-vice until you feel a slight resist-ance.

The drive then draws in the DVD/CD.You must not push or pull the DVD/CDwhilst it is being drawn in.

The DVD/CD is loaded. Either the DVDmenu appears or playback begins. Thisdepends on the DVD that is inserted.

Removing a DVD/CD

➮ Press the EJECT button J on theremote control or the EJECT but-ton J on the device .

The DVD/CD is ejected.

➮ Carefully remove the DVD/CD.

Starting playbackOnce you have loaded the DVD/CD thatyou want into the device, the DVD menuappears or playback begins. This de-pends on the DVD that is inserted.

➮ Press the ENTER/PLAY button Con the remote control or the PLAYbutton K on the device.

Playback begins.

On-screen displayYou can display various details regard-ing the playing time on the screen thatis connected to the device. You can hidethe on-screen display.

The following on-screen displays areavailable:

● TITLE 01/02 CHAPTER 33/4501 : 26 : 14: The first of two titles(main film sections) and chapter 33of 45 from that title is being played.Beneath it you will see the playingtime that has already elapsed.

● TITLE REMAIN00 : 31 : 58: The remaining playingtime of the current title is displayed.

● CHAPTER ELAPSED00 : 01 : 34: The elapsed playingtime of the current chapter is dis-played.

● CHAPTER REMAIN000 : 05 : 22: The remaining play-ing time of the current chapter isdisplayed.

Displaying/changing the on-screendisplay

➮ Press the DISPLAY button H onthe remote control repeatedly untilthe required information appears.

The on-screen display is shown at thetop edge of the screen.

Hiding the on-screen display

➮ Press the DISPLAY button H re-peatedly until OFF appears brieflyand the on-screen display disap-pears.

Fast-forwardingYou can fast forward DVDs at doublespeed, quadruple speed, 8-speed, 16-speed, 32-speed and 64-speed (de-pending on the DVD - some DVDs canonly be played at up to 16 speed).

To fast forward or super-fast forward theDVD,

➮ press the FORWARD button B onthe remote control repeatedly untilthe speed that you want is dis-played.

Stopping fast forwardingTo stop fast forwarding,

➮ press the ENTER/PLAY button Con the remote control or the PLAYbutton K on the device.

The DVD will then be played at normalspeed.

Slow motionYou can slow down playback of the DVDin a forwards or backwards direction.

➮ To decrease the playback speed,press the SLOW button > on theremote control once or severaltimes.

If you press the SLOW button > once,playback is switched to forwards playat half-speed (SF 1/2x).

After every subsequent press, thespeed is further decreased (to one quar-ter, one sixth, one eighth). The screendisplays the speed and SF for “SlowForward”.

Once the speed has reached the oneeighth setting, any subsequent press ofthe button will cause the film to beplayed backwards in slow motion. Thescreen displays the speed and SR for“Slow Rewind”.

To play the DVD at normal speed again,

➮ press the ENTER/PLAY button Con the remote control or the PLAYbutton K on the device.

➮ Press the button ? on the re-mote control or on the front of thedevice.

Playback is paused, and the device’sstarting screen and the text “PRESSPLAY TO CONTINUE” are displayed.

Resuming playback

➮ Press the ENTER/PLAY button Con the remote control or the PLAYbutton K on the device.

Playback is resumed.

Freeze frame➮ During playback, press the

PAUSE/STEP button D on the re-mote control or the PLAY buttonK on the device.

Playback is paused and is frozen as astill image.

Resuming playbackTo resume playback,

➮ press the ENTER/PLAY button Con the remote control or the PLAYbutton K on the device.

Skipping chaptersA title on a DVD may be divided intoseveral smaller chapters.

To skip to the next or any other subse-quent chapter,

➮ press the SKIP button : onceor several times on the remotecontrol or on the front of the device.

Playback will skip to the beginning ofthe next or another subsequent chap-ter accordingly.

To skip to the beginning of the currentor a previous chapter,

➮ press the SKIP button : onceor several times on the remotecontrol or on the front of the device.

Playback will skip to the beginning ofthe current or another previous chapteraccordingly.

Displaying subtitlesTo display subtitles,

➮ press the SUBTITLE button 9 onthe remote control.

Subtitles are displayed. The on-screendisplay appears. The current languageand the number of available subtitle lan-guages are displayed next to “SUBTI-TLE”.

To change the subtitle language,

➮ press the SUBTITLE button 9once or several times until subtitlesappear in the language that youwant.

Note:You can also use the DVD menu toswitch subtitles on/off or to select thelanguage in which they are displayed(see DVD menu). Additionally, you canset your preferred language for subti-tles in the setup menu. For further in-formation, read the section entitled “Pre-setting the language for subtitles” in the“Setup” chapter.

Selecting the playback languageTo select the playback language,

➮ press the AUDIO button 8 on theremote control once or severaltimes.

The playback language changes. Theon-screen display appears. The currentlanguage, the language number and thenumber of available playback languag-es will be displayed.

Note:You can also use the DVD menu tochange the playback language (seeDVD menu). Additionally, you can setyour preferred playback language in thesetup menu. For further information,read the section entitled “Presetting theplayback language” in the “Setup” chap-ter.

Changing the camera angleSome DVDs provide two or more dif-ferent camera angles for the samescene.

The number of the current camera an-gle and the number of possible cameraangles is displayed next to the camerasymbol in the on-screen display.

To change the camera angle,

➮ press the ANGLE button 7 on theremote control.

The scene will be displayed from thenext camera angle. The on-screen dis-play appears.

Note:In the setup menu you can configurethe system to display a camera symbol

if additional camera angles are avail-able. For further information, read thesection entitled “Displaying camera an-gles” in the “Setup” chapter.

Magnifying a screen section(zoom)You can zoom into a freely selectablesection of the film that is currently beingplayed with up to 3 times the magnifi-cation.

To zoom into a screen section,

➮ press the ZOOM button 6 on theremote control once or severaltimes.

The centre section of the screen is mag-nified by one step every time you pressthe button. The zoom steps availableare 1.5 times, two times and three timesmagnification.

Note:Once you have set the magnificationlevel that you want, you can freely movethe magnified screen section using thearrow buttons = on the remote con-trol.

Deactivating the zoomTo continue watching the film withoutany magnification,

➮ press the ZOOM button 6 on theremote control repeatedly until“ZOOM OFF” appears in the dis-play.

DVD menuThe DVD menu is provided by the DVDthat you inserted in the player. After youinsert a DVD and playback begins, theDVD menu appears on-screen automat-ically.

Note:The type of options offered in theDVD menu depends on the particu-lar DVD.A DVD might, for instance, offer the fol-lowing options in the DVD menu:

● You can choose between variouslanguages for playback and subti-tles.

● Besides the actual film, you canalso watch the trailer that ran incinemas or on the TV to promotethe film, and you can watch thefilm’s “making of”.

● A film is divided into several con-secutive chapters. You can select achapter and start playback fromthat point without having to fast for-ward to that particular point in thefilm as you would have to do if youwere watching a video cassette.

CD and MP3 modeIn addition to DVDs and video CDs, youcan also play audio CDs, photo CDs(VCD 2.0) and MP3-CDs.

If you insert and play an audio CD, youcan use the play, search, pause andrepeat functions as described for DVDmode.

If you insert a photo CD,

➮ after you see “Press play to con-tinue” appear, press the PLAY but-ton K.

➮ Press the T.MENU button 4 >PBC on.

➮ Press the PLAY button K >the CD’s start page appears.

➮ Press the PLAY button K >the slideshow begins

If you want to play MP3-CDs, they mustbe formatted in the “Joliet” or “ISO 9660”format.

After you insert an MP3-CD, a menu(Smart Navi) appears on-screen to helpyou navigate through the CD’s contents.

You can use the Smart Navi menu toswitch conveniently between tracks anddirectories using the / buttons = on the remote control.

EqualizerThe ME4 is equipped with a built-in 7-band equalizer that you can use to opti-mise the music reproduction to suit yourvehicle or the style of music. You havefive sound presets and a user-definedequalizer at your disposal.

Sound presets can be selected for thefollowing music styles:

• Classic

• Jazz

• Pop

• Ballad

• Dance

The user-defined equalizer allows youto adjust the music reproduction to suityour personal tastes by letting you boostor reduce the output of the following fre-quencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz,2 kHz, 6 kHz and 15 kHz. The equaliz-er is displayed on-screen whilst you aremaking your adjustments.

Selecting sound presetsTo select one of the five sound presets,

➮ press the EQUALIZER button Eon the remote control.

The current setting or the setting thatwas used last is displayed.

➮ Press the ENTER/PLAY button Crepeatedly on the remote controluntil the setting that you want ap-pears.

After a few seconds, the equalizer dis-play disappears from the screen but theequalizer remains activated until youdeactivate it.

Adjusting the user-definedequalizerYou can adjust the equalizer to suit yourrequirements by boosting or reducingthe output of the available frequencies.

Notes on adjusting the settingsTo make changes to the settings, werecommend you use a CD that you arefamiliar with.

● WIDE: The DVD player is connect-ed to a 16:9 monitor. The wide-screen picture is displayed fully on-screen.

DivXYou can set the 3, 5 or 10 min. settingin the “SOFT CHAP. ON” menu item inthe “PREFERENCES” menu.

Parental lockYou can password protect the deviceagainst unauthorised use. You can alsospecify a “rating level”. “Rating level”means that certain DVDs are provid-ed with a code that sets the minimumage limit for persons viewing thatparticular DVD. If you set a rating levelthat lies below the rating level for theDVD that is inserted in the drive, youwill only be able to play that DVD afteryou have entered the password.

Note:Not all DVDs support the rating levelfunction.In the menu you can set which films areallowed to be played. The levels arebased on the guidelines of the MovingPicture Association of America (MPAA).

The following can be selected:

1 G: Approved for children

2: Approved for children

3 PG: Accompaniment by an adult isrecommended during playback.

4 PG 13: Accompaniment by an adultis recommended, not suitable for chil-dren under the age of 13.

5: No evaluation of the DVD content isavailable.

6 PG-R: Forbidden for children andyouths, content includes depiction ofviolence, obscene language, etc.

7 NC 17: Content not suitable for youngpersons under the age of 17.

8 ADULT: Content only for adults: vio-lence, sex, etc.

NO PARENTAL: The parental lock isdisabled.

Note:● You can unlock some locked DVDs

directly at the start with YES(ENTER) and the password. OtherDVDs first require you to changethe rating level in the setup menubefore playing the DVD. This de-pends on the DVD.

Setting the colour televisionstandard of the TV setTo ensure an optimum picture quality,set the colour television standard in theDVD unit’s settings so that it matchesthe standard used by the connectedmonitor.

“PAL” is the colour television standardthat is valid in Europe, and “NTSC” isthe standard that is valid in America andAsia.

If you select the “Multi” setting, theDVD’s standard will be used for play-back.

You can adjust the television standardsetting in the “TV TYPE” menu item inthe “PREFERENCES” menu.

Setting the picture modeYou can select the picture mode for op-timum picture quality. Select the “AUTO”option.

You can adjust the picture mode set-ting in the “PIC MODE” menu item inthe “GENERAL SETUP” menu.

Displaying the camera angleYou can set the system to display a “ ”camera symbol whenever there is morethan one camera angle available on theDVD. To do so, select the “ON” setting.

You can adjust the camera angle set-ting in the “ANGLE MARK” menu itemin the “GENERAL SETUP” menu.

Switching the coaxial digitaloutput (SPDIF) on/offIf you connect the ME4 to an amplifierusing the digital (SPDIF) input, you mustactivate the SPDIF output on the ME4.To do so, select the “ON” setting.

You can adjust the digital output settingin the “SPDIF OUTPUT” menu item inthe “AUDIO SETUP” menu.

Configuring the audio outputIf the device is installed in the vehicle,you should connect it to the vehicle’ssystem (amplifier, monitor) via the lineoutput.

“Dual mono” settingFor DVDs with 1+1 audio mode (twomono channels), you can set how youwant the two channels to be outputted.

The following settings are available:

● Stereo:Stereo playback of a 1+1 pro-gramme. Channel 1 is sent to theleft output and channel 2 to theright output.

● CH1-Mono:Channel 1 of the DVD is played onboth outputs (left and right).

● CH2-Mono:Channel 2 of the DVD is played onboth outputs (left and right).

● Mix Mono:Channel 1 and 2 of the DVD areplayed on both outputs (left andright).

➮ Open the setup menu.

Pro Logic settingIf you are watching/listening to a DVDcontaining an audio track in Dolby Sur-round Pro Logic, you can activate ProLogic in order to obtain a surround-sound signal at the digital output. ThePro Logic decoder in the ME4 will thencompute a surround-sound signal thatcomes close to the Dolby 5.1 listeningexperience.

You can choose between the settings:“ON”, “OFF” and “AUTO”. If the “AUTO”setting is selected and a Dolby Surround

Pro Logic track is present on the disc,the device will always use the Pro Log-ic decoder to output a signal at the dig-ital output.

You can find the Pro Logic settings in“AUDIO SETUP” under “PRO LOGIC”.

Downmixing Dolby Digital DVDsIf your amplifier system does not havea digital input, you can simply connectthe ME4 to two free inputs. The ME4’sdownmix function computes a compat-ible stereo signal from the Dolby Digitalsignal.

You can find the downmix settings un-der “SPEAKER SETUP” in the setupmenu.

Configuring PCMYou can make the ME4 output a linearPCM signal (LPCM) with a samplingrate of 48k or 96k.

Only change this setting if the systemin your vehicle only works with 48k PCMsignals. You can find the PCM settingsin “AUDIO SETUP” under “LPCM OUT-PUT”.

Activating the screensaverThe ME4 is equipped with a screensav-er that prevents pictures (e.g. menus)from “burning into” liquid crystal dis-plays.

If the screensaver is activated, a Blau-punkt logo is displayed approximately60 seconds after the last action takenby the user in order to prevent individu-al pictures burning into the screen.

Installation and connection

Installation kitThe supplied installation kit contains twobrackets, screws, a power supply ca-ble and an IR receiver with a 3.5 mmjack plug.

Installation and safety noticesBefore connecting your DVD PlayerME4, please read the following informa-tion carefully.

The battery’s negative terminal mustbe disconnected for the entire timeit takes to install and connect thedevice.

When doing so, you must observe thevehicle manufacturer’s safety notices(airbags, alarm systems, trip comput-ers, immobilizers).

When installing the ME4, select a loca-tion in the vehicle that allows you to at-tach it firmly into place using screws.The installation location should be suchthat the ME4 does not get in the way ofthe driver and cannot endanger the oc-cupants in the event of the vehicle sud-denly coming to a halt, for instance,during an emergency stop.

Never place the remote control withinthe inflation range of airbags and makesure that the remote control is storedsecurely so that it cannot injure the ve-hicle occupants in the event of an emer-gency stop.

You must take the following into accountwhen selecting the installation location:

- The vehicle tank must not be dam-aged by screws.

- There must be no wires or pipesrunning beneath the surface onwhich you want to install the de-vice.

- The spare wheel, tools, etc. mustnot be damaged by the screws.Please also make sure that the de-vice does not restrict access to thespare wheel, tools, etc.

Do not install the device in any locationthat is:

- subjected to direct sunlight.

- near warm air outlets (heating,etc.).

- subjected to rain or moisture.

- subjected to dust or dirt.

- subjected to strong vibrations.

For installation in the dashboard (1 DINcompartment), please use the suppliedmounting sleeve.

To ensure the device is installed secure-ly, make sure you only use the suppliedmounting components (brackets,screws).

ConnectionsConnect the free ends of the suppliedconnection cable to your vehicle’s pow-er supply.

Yellow: Continuous positive powersource 12V

Black: EarthRed: Ignition

The continuous positive power cablebetween the battery and the ME4 mustadditionally be protected directly at thebattery with a fuse holder (5 amperes).

Plug the connector plug into the 4-pinsocket on the left-hand side of the de-vice.

You can connect the infrared receiverfor the remote control to the REMOTESENSOR 3.5 mm jack plug. The infra-red receiver can then be installed any-where in the vehicle.

Note:If you have not installed the ME4 in aconcealed location in the vehicle, youcan also point the remote control directlyat the front of the device.

For audio/video playback, connect theAUDIO/VIDEO OUT and DIGITAL OUTcable connections to the appropriateinputs of your system.

Additionally, you can connect externalaudio/video sources to this set of ca-bles (AUDIO/VIDEO IN). For furtherdetails, read the chapter entitled “Ex-ternal sources”.

2. Insert the new batteries. Batterytype: two AAA-type batteries. Makesure the battery terminals are posi-tioned as shown in the diagram inthe battery compartment.

3. Close the battery compartment.

Using the remote controlPoint the remote control at the sepa-rate infrared receiver or at the infraredreceiver on the front of the device.

Angle of operation: approximately 30˚in all directions from the front of the IRreceiver.

DVD modeYou can use the ME4 to play DVDs, vid-eo CDs (VCD), super video CDs(SVCD), standard audio CDs and pho-to CDs (VCD 2.0, see page 48) as wellas MP3-CDs.

These operating instructions refer tousage with DVDs. The button functionsfor playing audio CDs are the same.

The ME4 is designed to play DVDs withregional code 2. If the device is de-signed for use with other regional codes,labels at the back of these instructionsand on the device will inform you of this.

CD-Rs and CD-RWs (CDs that youhave “burned” yourself) can generallyalso be played. Due to the varying qual-ity of CDs, Blaupunkt cannot guaran-tee that they will work properly.

To ensure the system functions proper-ly, only use CDs labelled with the com-pact disc logo. Problems might be ex-perienced when trying to play copy-pro-tected CDs. Blaupunkt cannot guaran-tee the proper functioning of copy-pro-tected CDs!

Media that you have burned yourself(such as VCD/SVCD and DVD-R/RW,DVD+R/RW) can generally be played.Depending on the writable mediabeing used and the software used tocreate and write data onto thesemedia, Blaupunkt cannot provideany guarantee for complete compat-ibility or flawless playback.

Adjusting the volumeYou can adjust the volume in steps from0 (off) to 16 (maximum).

➮ To increase the volume, press theVOLUME + button G.

➮ To decrease the volume, press theVOLUME - button G.

Volume muteYou can instantaneously reduce thevolume (mute).

➮ Press the MUTE button F.

“MUTE” appears on-screen.

Inserting/removing a DVD/CDThe ME4 has a slot-in drive without atray. It is only possible to achieve gooddamping of the vibrations of the drive inthe device if slot-in drives are used.

Inserting a DVD/CD

➮ Insert the DVD/CD with the printedside uppermost into the DVD/CDcompartment at the front of the de-vice until you feel a slight resist-ance.

The drive then draws in the DVD/CD.You must not push or pull the DVD/CDwhilst it is being drawn in.

The DVD/CD is loaded. Either the DVDmenu appears or playback begins. Thisdepends on the DVD that is inserted.

Removing a DVD/CD

➮ Press the EJECT button J on theremote control or the EJECT but-ton J on the device .

The DVD/CD is ejected.

➮ Carefully remove the DVD/CD.

Starting playbackOnce you have loaded the DVD/CD thatyou want into the device, the DVD menuappears or playback begins. This de-pends on the DVD that is inserted.

➮ Press the ENTER/PLAY button Con the remote control or the PLAYbutton K on the device.

Playback begins.

On-screen displayYou can display various details regard-ing the playing time on the screen thatis connected to the device. You can hidethe on-screen display.

● TITLE 01/02 CHAPTER 33/4501 : 26 : 14: The first of two titles(main film sections) and chapter 33of 45 from that title is being played.Beneath it you will see the playingtime that has already elapsed.

● TITLE REMAIN00 : 31 : 58: The remaining playingtime of the current title is displayed.

● CHAPTER ELAPSED00 : 01 : 34: The elapsed playingtime of the current chapter is dis-played.

● CHAPTER REMAIN000 : 05 : 22: The remaining play-ing time of the current chapter isdisplayed.

Displaying/changing the on-screendisplay

The on-screen display is shown at thetop edge of the screen.

Hiding the on-screen display

Fast-forwardingYou can fast forward DVDs at doublespeed, quadruple speed, 8-speed, 16-speed, 32-speed and 64-speed (de-pending on the DVD - some DVDs canonly be played at up to 16 speed).

To fast forward or super-fast forward theDVD,

➮ press the FORWARD button B onthe remote control repeatedly untilthe speed that you want is dis-played.

Stopping fast forwardingTo stop fast forwarding,

➮ press the ENTER/PLAY button Con the remote control or the PLAYbutton K on the device.

The DVD will then be played at normalspeed.

Slow motionYou can slow down playback of the DVDin a forwards or backwards direction.

➮ To decrease the playback speed,press the SLOW button > on theremote control once or severaltimes.

If you press the SLOW button > once,playback is switched to forwards playat half-speed (SF 1/2x).

After every subsequent press, thespeed is further decreased (to one quar-ter, one sixth, one eighth). The screendisplays the speed and SF for “SlowForward”.

Displaying subtitlesTo display subtitles,

➮ press the SUBTITLE button 9 onthe remote control.

Subtitles are displayed. The on-screendisplay appears. The current languageand the number of available subtitle lan-guages are displayed next to “SUBTI-TLE”.

To change the subtitle language,

➮ press the SUBTITLE button 9once or several times until subtitlesappear in the language that youwant.

Note:You can also use the DVD menu toswitch subtitles on/off or to select thelanguage in which they are displayed(see DVD menu). Additionally, you canset your preferred language for subti-tles in the setup menu. For further in-formation, read the section entitled “Pre-setting the language for subtitles” in the“Setup” chapter.

Selecting the playback languageTo select the playback language,

➮ press the AUDIO button 8 on theremote control once or severaltimes.

The playback language changes. Theon-screen display appears. The currentlanguage, the language number and thenumber of available playback languag-es will be displayed.

Note:You can also use the DVD menu tochange the playback language (seeDVD menu). Additionally, you can setyour preferred playback language in thesetup menu. For further information,read the section entitled “Presetting theplayback language” in the “Setup” chap-ter.

Changing the camera angleSome DVDs provide two or more dif-ferent camera angles for the samescene.

The number of the current camera an-gle and the number of possible cameraangles is displayed next to the camerasymbol in the on-screen display.

To change the camera angle,

➮ press the ANGLE button 7 on theremote control.

The scene will be displayed from thenext camera angle. The on-screen dis-play appears.

Note:In the setup menu you can configurethe system to display a camera symbol

if additional camera angles are avail-able. For further information, read thesection entitled “Displaying camera an-gles” in the “Setup” chapter.

Magnifying a screen section(zoom)You can zoom into a freely selectablesection of the film that is currently beingplayed with up to 3 times the magnifi-cation.

To zoom into a screen section,

➮ press the ZOOM button 6 on theremote control once or severaltimes.

The centre section of the screen is mag-nified by one step every time you pressthe button. The zoom steps availableare 1.5 times, two times and three timesmagnification.

Note:Once you have set the magnificationlevel that you want, you can freely movethe magnified screen section using thearrow buttons = on the remote con-trol.

Deactivating the zoomTo continue watching the film withoutany magnification,

➮ press the ZOOM button 6 on theremote control repeatedly until“ZOOM OFF” appears in the dis-play.

DVD menuThe DVD menu is provided by the DVDthat you inserted in the player. After youinsert a DVD and playback begins, theDVD menu appears on-screen automat-ically.

Note:The type of options offered in theDVD menu depends on the particu-lar DVD.A DVD might, for instance, offer the fol-lowing options in the DVD menu:

● You can choose between variouslanguages for playback and subti-tles.

● Besides the actual film, you canalso watch the trailer that ran incinemas or on the TV to promotethe film, and you can watch thefilm’s “making of”.

● A film is divided into several con-secutive chapters. You can select achapter and start playback fromthat point without having to fast for-ward to that particular point in thefilm as you would have to do if youwere watching a video cassette.

CD and MP3 modeIn addition to DVDs and video CDs, youcan also play audio CDs, photo CDs(VCD 2.0) and MP3-CDs.

If you insert and play an audio CD, youcan use the play, search, pause andrepeat functions as described for DVDmode.

If you insert a photo CD,

➮ after you see “Press play to con-tinue” appear, press the PLAY but-ton K.

➮ Press the T.MENU button 4 >PBC on.

➮ Press the PLAY button K >the CD’s start page appears.

➮ Press the PLAY button K >the slideshow begins

If you want to play MP3-CDs, they mustbe formatted in the “Joliet” or “ISO 9660”format.

After you insert an MP3-CD, a menu(Smart Navi) appears on-screen to helpyou navigate through the CD’s contents.

You can use the Smart Navi menu toswitch conveniently between tracks anddirectories using the / buttons = on the remote control.

EqualizerThe ME4 is equipped with a built-in 7-band equalizer that you can use to opti-mise the music reproduction to suit yourvehicle or the style of music. You havefive sound presets and a user-definedequalizer at your disposal.

Sound presets can be selected for thefollowing music styles:

• Classic

• Jazz

• Pop

• Ballad

• Dance

The user-defined equalizer allows youto adjust the music reproduction to suityour personal tastes by letting you boostor reduce the output of the following fre-quencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz,2 kHz, 6 kHz and 15 kHz. The equaliz-er is displayed on-screen whilst you aremaking your adjustments.

Selecting sound presetsTo select one of the five sound presets,

➮ press the EQUALIZER button Eon the remote control.

The current setting or the setting thatwas used last is displayed.

➮ Press the ENTER/PLAY button Crepeatedly on the remote controluntil the setting that you want ap-pears.

After a few seconds, the equalizer dis-play disappears from the screen but theequalizer remains activated until youdeactivate it.

Adjusting the user-definedequalizerYou can adjust the equalizer to suit yourrequirements by boosting or reducingthe output of the available frequencies.

Notes on adjusting the settingsTo make changes to the settings, werecommend you use a CD that you arefamiliar with.

● WIDE: The DVD player is connect-ed to a 16:9 monitor. The wide-screen picture is displayed fully on-screen.

DivXYou can set the 3, 5 or 10 min. settingin the “SOFT CHAP. ON” menu item inthe “PREFERENCES” menu.

Parental lockYou can password protect the deviceagainst unauthorised use. You can alsospecify a “rating level”. “Rating level”means that certain DVDs are provid-ed with a code that sets the minimumage limit for persons viewing thatparticular DVD. If you set a rating levelthat lies below the rating level for theDVD that is inserted in the drive, youwill only be able to play that DVD afteryou have entered the password.

Note:Not all DVDs support the rating levelfunction.In the menu you can set which films areallowed to be played. The levels arebased on the guidelines of the MovingPicture Association of America (MPAA).

The following can be selected:

1 G: Approved for children

2: Approved for children

3 PG: Accompaniment by an adult isrecommended during playback.

4 PG 13: Accompaniment by an adultis recommended, not suitable for chil-dren under the age of 13.

5: No evaluation of the DVD content isavailable.

6 PG-R: Forbidden for children andyouths, content includes depiction ofviolence, obscene language, etc.

7 NC 17: Content not suitable for youngpersons under the age of 17.

8 ADULT: Content only for adults: vio-lence, sex, etc.

NO PARENTAL: The parental lock isdisabled.

Note:● You can unlock some locked DVDs

directly at the start with YES(ENTER) and the password. OtherDVDs first require you to changethe rating level in the setup menubefore playing the DVD. This de-pends on the DVD.

Setting the colour televisionstandard of the TV setTo ensure an optimum picture quality,set the colour television standard in theDVD unit’s settings so that it matchesthe standard used by the connectedmonitor.

“PAL” is the colour television standardthat is valid in Europe, and “NTSC” isthe standard that is valid in America andAsia.

If you select the “Multi” setting, theDVD’s standard will be used for play-back.

You can adjust the television standardsetting in the “TV TYPE” menu item inthe “PREFERENCES” menu.

Setting the picture modeYou can select the picture mode for op-timum picture quality. Select the “AUTO”option.

You can adjust the picture mode set-ting in the “PIC MODE” menu item inthe “GENERAL SETUP” menu.

Displaying the camera angleYou can set the system to display a “ ”camera symbol whenever there is morethan one camera angle available on theDVD. To do so, select the “ON” setting.

You can adjust the camera angle set-ting in the “ANGLE MARK” menu itemin the “GENERAL SETUP” menu.

Switching the coaxial digitaloutput (SPDIF) on/offIf you connect the ME4 to an amplifierusing the digital (SPDIF) input, you mustactivate the SPDIF output on the ME4.To do so, select the “ON” setting.

You can adjust the digital output settingin the “SPDIF OUTPUT” menu item inthe “AUDIO SETUP” menu.

Configuring the audio outputIf the device is installed in the vehicle,you should connect it to the vehicle’ssystem (amplifier, monitor) via the lineoutput.

“Dual mono” settingFor DVDs with 1+1 audio mode (twomono channels), you can set how youwant the two channels to be outputted.

The following settings are available:

● Stereo:Stereo playback of a 1+1 pro-gramme. Channel 1 is sent to theleft output and channel 2 to theright output.

● CH1-Mono:Channel 1 of the DVD is played onboth outputs (left and right).

● CH2-Mono:Channel 2 of the DVD is played onboth outputs (left and right).

● Mix Mono:Channel 1 and 2 of the DVD areplayed on both outputs (left andright).

➮ Open the setup menu.

Pro Logic settingIf you are watching/listening to a DVDcontaining an audio track in Dolby Sur-round Pro Logic, you can activate ProLogic in order to obtain a surround-sound signal at the digital output. ThePro Logic decoder in the ME4 will thencompute a surround-sound signal thatcomes close to the Dolby 5.1 listeningexperience.

You can choose between the settings:“ON”, “OFF” and “AUTO”. If the “AUTO”setting is selected and a Dolby Surround

Pro Logic track is present on the disc,the device will always use the Pro Log-ic decoder to output a signal at the dig-ital output.

You can find the Pro Logic settings in“AUDIO SETUP” under “PRO LOGIC”.

Downmixing Dolby Digital DVDsIf your amplifier system does not havea digital input, you can simply connectthe ME4 to two free inputs. The ME4’sdownmix function computes a compat-ible stereo signal from the Dolby Digitalsignal.

You can find the downmix settings un-der “SPEAKER SETUP” in the setupmenu.

Configuring PCMYou can make the ME4 output a linearPCM signal (LPCM) with a samplingrate of 48k or 96k.

Only change this setting if the systemin your vehicle only works with 48k PCMsignals. You can find the PCM settingsin “AUDIO SETUP” under “LPCM OUT-PUT”.

Activating the screensaverThe ME4 is equipped with a screensav-er that prevents pictures (e.g. menus)from “burning into” liquid crystal dis-plays.

If the screensaver is activated, a Blau-punkt logo is displayed approximately60 seconds after the last action takenby the user in order to prevent individu-al pictures burning into the screen.

Resetting the deviceYou can reset the device thus clearingall the settings you have changed.

➮ Confirm your choice by pressingthe ENTER/PLAY button C.
