  • Cycle times reduced from 13 to 6 seconds. Schnaithmann relies on Siemens for dual track transfer systems.

Cycle times reduced from 13 to 6 seconds

The cycle time is an often discussed variable in conveyor technology. To optimize speed and yet retain the high lev-el of accuracy required, Schnaithmann developed a new lifting system based on a unique combination of the SIMOGEAR gear motor and a SINAMICS frequency in-verter.

    More than twice as fast

Typically, the cycle time of a 1,000 mm hub is about 13 seconds. By using a SIMOGEAR gear motor in combination with a distributed SINAMICS G120D inverter, Schnaith-mann was able to reduce idle time. Today, the company records a cycle time of merely six seconds!

    Maximum precision integrated

The SINAMICS G120D inverter not only speeds up cycle times. It also provides positioning functions, making it possible to accurately position the Schnaithmann lifting system down to 0.5 mm, for example. Further benefits are its communication via PROFINET with the control system a fail-safe SIMATIC S7-317-F and the safety functions already integrated in the device.

  • 500 pallets transported in an hour. With Siemens technology, Lapp is perfectly on target to reach its business objectives.

    Variable speed

At Lapp, acceleration and decelaration in the conveyor sys-tems are controlled using a SINAMICS G120 frequency in-verter. The bus connection makes it possible to change the velocities in the individual zones according to the require-ments of the different sections. This way, Lapp profits from individually variable velocities.

    Increasing efficiency

Together, Lapp and Siemens developed a gripper technol-ogy that uses a SIMATIC ET 200 distributed I/O system and direct starters to reliably control hub movements. Lapp also benefitted from Siemens expertise in optimizing its materi-al transport. Thanks to implementing ergonomic processes for operation personnel throughout the plant and equip-ping the conveyor systems with belt conveyors, Lapp is able to transport 500 pallets an hour.

    500 pallets an hour

Planning at the Lapp group reaches into the year 2018 and requires the plant to provide a performance of transporting 500 pallets an hour. This is where Siemens comes in: By implementing ergonomic processes throughout the plant and individually adjusting velocities, the company was able to realize this degree of efficiency without any problems.

  • Number of cycles increased by 8%. Siemens helps Kasto to boost efficiency.

Number of cycles increased by 8%

In storage systems everything depends on time and the possible number of storage processes defined to be com-pleted per hour. Together with Siemens, Kasto increased the count by optimizing the traverse paths of the storage and retrieval system as well as the traverse cycles them-selves. This resulted in even less idle time and an 8% higher number of cycles.

    More in less time

The SINAMICS S120 features both compact design and easy handling. A key factor for Kasto to upgrade the drives for their storage and retrieval systems. This allowed the lead-ing manufacturer of storage systems for long material and sheet metal to increase efficiency during engineering and commissioning processes.

Cost savings of up to 15%

The SINAMICS S120 modular drive system makes it pos-sible to quickly connect the drive components and allows for a space-saving, cost-effective assembly with minimal effort. Until today, Kasto has already delivered 30 storage and retrieval systems equipped with SINAMICS drives to customers all over the world. And the results have been positive throughout: Thanks to the reduced engineering efforts, hardware and wiring requirements combined with the lower number of cycles, cost savings of upto 15% were achieved.

  • Integrated conveyor technology functions

    Quick Stop

Based on the integrated Quick Stop function, independent of the PLC cycle time, the motor and therefore the goods being conveyed can be reproducibly stopped. To do this, the sensor is directly connected to the motor starter/ inverter. The PLC activates the Quick Stop function (not critical from a time perspective) or deactivates it if goods are to be conveyed. The sensor status is transferred to the PLC.

Application example: Stop light barrier of a conveyor section

    Limit switch logic

Using the integrated limit switch logic, independent of the PLC cycle time, motors can be reproducibly stopped at end stops. This is done by directly connecting sensors to the in-verter. When the sensors are activated, the inverter automatically stops. The conveyor can only move in the opposite direc-tion. The sensor status is transferred to the PLC.

Application example: Excentric elevating table, corner transfer conveyor End position shutdown for rotary tables and trolleys for

    transverse motion

    Basis-SPS-Funktionalitt

Logic and arithmetic interlocks can be generated in SINAMICS G inverters using the basic PLC functionality integrated as standard in the device (free function blocks). These are reproducibly processed, independent of the PLC cycle time

Application example: Rapid traverse/crawl switchover and Quick Stop

    triggered by a light barrier

  • Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) Totally Integrated Automation Portal

    Totally Integrated Automation (TIA)

Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) is the integrated plat-form for the implementation of automation solutions for all sectors. This system architecture forms the basis for open-ness, establishing connections and maximum interoperability across all plant and system components. The result: the best possible productivity at all levels of your plant or system from the field devices through the controller up to the man-agement level. TIA increases the efficiency of your produc-tion environment, your productivity and, as a consequence, your competitiveness.

Totally Integrated Automation Portal a milestone

With its Totally Integrated Automation Portal (TIA Portal), Siemens has realized its vision to offer an engineering frame-work that can be used to implement automation solutions in all sectors anywhere in the world. The TIA Portal is attractive as a result of the intuitive user interface, efficient navigation and well-proven technology. From planning, commissioning, operation and maintenance up to expansion of the automa-tion systems. The TIA Portal reduces the engineering time and associated costs.

  • Safety Integrated system-based functional safety

Safety technology safe machines with a high degree of availability simply and quickly created

Take the direct route to achieve the highest machine safety with Safety Integrated. Based on this leading-edge concept, which integrates the safety technology into the standard automation landscape, machine builders and plant operating companies both benefit: Safe, reliable and cost-ef-fective operation and therefore higher availability with significantly lower engineering costs.

    Safe drive technology

In plants and machines, automated motion represents a high potential hazard. As a consequence, also in safety solutions, drives play a central role, independent of the complexity of an automation task. Safe drive technology from Siemens can be simply integrated into any plant or system with safety-related requirements. The integrated safety functions facilitate powerful safety concepts, even without requiring an encod-er, therefore ensuring a higher degree of productivity.

  • The optimum solution for every identification task

Whether just-in-sequence production or reliable and seam-less tracking of products and batches: Increasingly, ma-chine-readable and automated, contactless identification systems are used in intelligent material flow and produc-tion control environments. Data matrix codes (DMC) and radio frequency identification (RFID) are attractive as a re-sult of the high data security and they have proven them-selves in a wide range of applications even in rugged in-dustrial environments. When compared to manual marking and data acquisition technologies, they allow time and costs to be significantly reduced.

Main criteria for selecting the optimum data storage and identification technology:

If the data carrier is reused (closed-loop system) or it is discarded at the end of the processing chain (open-loop system)

Can be marked/written to once or repeatedly within the processing sequence

Sensing distance/range and light relationships/contrast Property of the products to be marked as well as the

space available to attach marking Potential sources of interference such as ambient

    temperatures and pollution/dirt
