John Fraser earned .1 bachelor of arts degree from Memorial University in 1969 and a master of arts from the University of East Anglia, NOTWich. England. in 1971. Early in his career he established himself as a nationally known Journalist. producing distinguished work spanning the arts and polities. After working for the Toronco Telegram. he joined the Globe and Mail in 1972. initially as dance critic and feature wri te r , Successively. he served the paper as drama critic. Peking correspondent. national correspondent. national editor and London correspondent. During the same period he was also wrote widely about politics. the arts and international aJJairs for newspapers and magazines in the Umted States. Great Britain, France and Hong Kong. [n 1987 he was named the twelfth editor of Canada 's oldest magazine, Saturday Night. assuming one of the most prestigious editorial positions in the country. He is also the author of four books. A three-time winner of the National Newspaper Award. he has also rc.:eived the National Magazine Award and the Queen's Silver Juhi[cc Meda[

PAUL HENRI LEBLOND

Paul LeBlond became the dlrenor of earth and ocean sciences at the University of British Columbia IUBCI in 1992. He holds a JOlflt appointment in oceanography and physics at UBC and is ranked as a leading scientist within his fields of interests. which include the study of ocean waves and fisheries and coastal oceanography. He earned a B.A. in humanities in 1957 from Laval. a B.Sc. from McGill in 1961. and a Ph.D. in physics and oceanography from USC in 1964 Named a member of the Royal Society of Canada in 1982. he has been prominent in international scientific collaboration. In 1991 he became program leader of the Ocean Production Enhancement Network IOPEN). one of the Canadian CentreS of Excellence. in which Memorial participates along with Dalhousie. McGilL Laval. USC and the Bedford Institute 01 Oceanography. He also chairs the Canadian national committee lor the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE). He has received both the President·s Medal and the Tully Medal Irom the Can,ldian Meteorological and Oceanography Society. and held the Isaac Walton Killam Senior f'ellowship lor 1985-86
