Winslow Capital Management’s old office design was so spread out and separated that employees could go weeks or even months without seeing one another, even though the investment firm was located on a single floor of the IDS Tower.

That changed in 2017 when the firm moved to a larger space a few floors down. The investment firm, now an affiliate of Chicago-based Nuveen, went from traditional and dark wood offices to a modern look, but the redesign also reevaluated how Winslow’s staff of 40 would interact with their space.

On the original floor, none of the center space was used, so some of the offices were far apart. Lisa Elm, senior director of corporate development, described it as a horseshoe shape that left little room for happenstance meetings. Elm worked on the north side, and she almost never had a reason to go to the south side. “I could go months without seeing one of the analysts on the other side.”

In the redesign, the office’s center became a true hub, with a cafe and gathering place. “One of the very first days I saw everyone from all different business units of the floor in the center café having

lunch together,” Elm remembered. “That was one of the most rewarding aspects of the entire build up for me.”

Every office in the new space has glass walls. In the planning and designing stage, employees met and shared their most important aspects of a new space. Most asked for the same thing: natural light. Denise Sarles, a sales executive from furniture store Intereum, took note of this priority. “You really get the light to the core of the space.”

In fact, through the glass office walls, from practically anywhere in the office, you can see outside. “I don’t know any other client who’s ever done that,” Sarles said.

The firm is proud of its Minneapolis roots. The new office spaces reflect this, with front-of-house conference rooms named after local lakes, and back-of-house rooms named for neighborhoods like Dinkytown, Uptown and Loring Park. There are also two private treadmill rooms for walking work stations, one of them named Minnehaha Trail.

A large conference room entitled “The Founder’s Room” is named after founder Clark Winslow. Text inscribed on the window reads, “Over the Horizon,” a reference to a favorite question from Winslow, who advised colleagues to always think, “What’s new, what’s different, what’s over the

horizon?”

Nelson was the main architect, Intereum handled the furniture, Avison Young was the real estate broker, and Art Partners designed the huge art pieces on the walls.

Other amenities include a ping-pong table, sick room and mother’s room.
