Several countries around the world used star banknotes. The United States, New Zealand, Paraguay and Australia to name a few. A star note is a replacement to notes that were spoiled during the printing process. The last digit of the serial number of each replacement note was an asterisk (or star).

The first notes to be replaced in this way were Ten Shillings and One Pound with the Armitage/MacFarlane signature combination, printed in 1942 and Five Pound in 1960. The practice was not used for the Ten Pound note.

Australia’s banknote issuing authorities used this method until this practice was discontinued in 1972.

Struck by the Melbourne Mint seventy years ago, these Australian 1947 qua-ternary silver florins are from an origi-nal hoard put away since that time with quite a few of them exhibiting some natural toning and bagmarks, but are still graded uncirculated.

AUSSIE PRE-DECIMAL

Orange Coin & Stamp Club Expo is on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th April 2017 at Kenna Hall, 90 Hill Street Orange. We will be travelling the Central West (NSW) Region looking to buy coins and banknotes prior to the show, please email or phone us to arrange a time.

Also struck by the Melbourne Mint, the Australian 1933 silver shilling is the most sought after date in the series. Due to the depression, no shillings were struck for the years 1929, 1930 and 1932 and a very lim-ited number were issued for 1933. This be-ing the key date in average circulated.

SIR JACK BRABHAM 50¢ UNC

Born in Penrith, NSW in 1930, Richie Benaud OBE combined an outstanding record as a cricketer with a long and successful career as a highly respected commentator.

The Royal Australian Mint struck a cupro-nickel 50 cent uncirculated commemora-tive to celebrate his cricket achievements.

In Formula One racing, the feat of engi-neering and competing in a racecar of one’s own making is likely to never be repeated. Winning the driver’s championship in such a way would

today be considered practically unfathomable. The only driver to achieve

such a feat is Australia’s own Sir Jack Brabham, winning the Formula One World Championship and Formula One Constructors Championship in 1966. Brabham’s career evolved from a well-developed mechanical aptitude to driving when a friend convinced him to race one of the vehicles they

had created in 1948. Realising his skills in motor racing extended to being behind the wheel, Brabham went on to win the 1948 Australian Speedcar Championship. Winning the Formula One World Championship in 1959, 1960 and 1966, Sir Jack Brabham’s legacy of achievement continues to inspire Australians of all ages.

The Royal Australian Mint has struck a coloured 2017 cupro-nickel 50 cent uncirculated to celebrate the late motor racing icon.

MILITARY PAYMENT CERTIFICATESMilitary payment certificates (MPC), was a form of currency used to pay U.S. military personnel in foreign countries. It was used in specific areas from a few months after the end of World War II until a few months after the end of U.S. participation in the Vietnam War. MPC utilise layers of line lithography to create colourful banknotes that could be produced cheaply. Fifteen series of MPC were created, but only 13 series were issued. The remaining two were largely destroyed, although some examples remain.- (1951) Series 481 5 Cents P.M22 VG $10.00
