• Since December 2016, Chile isexperiencing the worst forest fireemergency in its history: more than500 000 hectares have been affectedsince July 2016 (double than the areaburnt in EU countries in 2015).
• The UCPM was activated on 26 January2017 by the Government of Chile.
• France, Spain and Portugal offeredassistance consisting of ground forestfire fighting teams and equipment. 180European firefighters arrived in Chile on28 January 2017.
• Austria and Sweden contributed withspecialized firefighting equipment andtools.
• An EUCPT was deployed: six CPexperts + 2 ERCC Liaison officers.
Chile – Forest Fires
On 17 Nov. the UCPM was activated, based on a RfA from OCHA
UCPM Response:
• AT, DE, DK, FI, FR, NO, SE and SKoffered assistance through the UCPM,with the first arrival on 12 Dec. inErbil (Iraq).
• A small EUCP Team was deployed toErbil from 28 Nov. to 22 Dec. Theteam re-started the work as of 2 Janfor 10 days in 2017.
