About Institute
Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi (IIT-BHU),
formerly known as Institute of Technology, Banaras
Hindu University (IT-BHU), is a public engineering
institution located in Varanasi, India. Founded in 1919
as an integral part of the BHU, it was designated status
of IIT under The Institutes of Technology (Amendment)
Act, 2012 passed in Parliament. IIT (BHU) has 13
departments and three interdisciplinary schools.
Admission for undergraduates is through the Indian
Institute of Technology, Joint Entrance Examination
(IIT-JEE), an annual college entrance examination used
as the sole admission criterion by the sixteen IITs.
IIT-JEE is considered to be a highly competitive exami-
nation as reiterated by the fact that it has a very low
admission rate.
Admission for postgraduate courses is though Gradu-
ate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for postgradu-
ate courses.
Beyond Academics Three fests spanning over 4-5 days draw huge sponsor-
ships, are fully organized by student body.
TECHNEX, the annual techno-management fest incor-
porates challenging competitions, innovative work-
shops and lectures by renowned personalities.
KASHIYATRA, cultural extravaganza of the year makes
the campus of IIT (BHU) completely transformed into a
place buzzing with flurry of activities.
SPARDHA, the all India sports festival of IIT (BHU) gen-
erates a lot of enthusiasm in campus where students
from different colleges compete in a total of 18-20
sporting events.

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary field, integrating two dynamic professions, Medicine and Engineering. School of Biomedical Engineering, with its consistent research accomplishments and long tradition of cross-discipline collaborations, represents an ideal environment for biomedical engineers. School was established by UGC, India during the 5
th
Five Year Plan in 1978 while undergraduate program started in 2006. Being an integral part of Banaras Hindu University, school benefits from having collabo-rative research with Institute of Medical Sciences situated in same campus.
Faculty members of school have expertise in the fields
of Electrophysiological signal analysis, Biomaterials,
Medical image processing, Neurophysiology,
Modeling of biological systems, Biomechanics,
Artificial Intelligence and Bioinstrumentation.
About School
Accolades Facilities The School is housed in two buildings, providing
learning experience essential to a first-rate education in
biomedical engineering. The buildings are designed
with ample room to conduct classes, seminars, under-
graduate laboratory work and postgraduate research.

School Highlights
School has produced numerous research papers in
national & international journals in various fields of
Biomedical engineering
Low Cost Multi-Use Hearing Aid (less than 20$)
device developed and designed at school for which
Patent has been filed.
Faculty members have collaborations with other
departments of IIT (BHU) and have associations with
IMS (BHU) and Uppsala University (Sweden).
Many seminars and guest lectures have been con-
ducted by eminent academicians from places like
Uppsala University (Sweden) and DST (India).
Presently, school with the help of CEERI, Pilani is
developing implantable sensor for eye for early
detection of Glaucoma. Work is also going on Bone
cement nano-composites, orthopedic implants,
non-invasive measurement and analysis of blood
parameters and other various topics.
Department also has its Library, study rooms for students and high speed internet access. Licensed versions of MATLAB, Mathematica are available for students and research scholars.
Industrial visit to companies like GE Healthcare,
Siemens, Reliance Life Sciences, Johnson & Johnson,
etc. is organized every year by department at the end of
odd semester.
