The Big World of
PHYSICS
Organizers of Project: Head of Project: Lilit Hovhannisyan Coordinator: Tigran Dadalyan Narine Gevorgyan, Shogher Shahbazyan, Armen Hovhannisyan, Diana Antonosyan, Sergey Grigoryan, Anush Muradyan
Thirty‐two physics students in upper secondary schools of Armenia participated in the project “The Big World of Physics”, which was organized by our chapter.
During “The Big World of Physics” we organized scientific journey to the main scientific organizations of Armenia: Yerevan State University (YSU), LT‐PYRKAL, Russian‐Armenian University (RAU) and Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory of NAS (BAO).
In the framework of the project students visited research groups and laboratories of Optics, Laser physics, Molecular Physics, Solid State Physics and Semiconductor Physics in YSU and RAU.
The technology of growth of crystals was shown to them in LT‐PYRKAL.

In Byurakan students had an opportunity to see ZTA‐2.6 telescope ‐ the largest observational instrument of BAO operating since 1976. They visited the office of Academician Victor Hambardzumyan ‐ one of the founders of theoretical astrophysics, as well as the founder of Byurakan Observatory.
Russian-Armenian University
RAU
The visit to all scientific centers was accompanied by introductory lectures of institutions representatives.
In YSU we were welcomed by the dean of Physics Faculty, Academician R. Avagyan and vice-dean, Prof. L. Aslanyan.
In RAU our scientific guide was the dean of Department of Physics and Technology, Prof. H. Sarkisyan.
The exhibition of products of LT-PYRKAL cjsc, was introduced by director Dr. G. Buniatyan.
Listening to the lectures by director of BAO Prof. H. Harutyunian and co-president of Armenian Astronomical Society Dr. A. Mickaelian we had an excursion “through planets to stars”...
At the end of the Project “The Big World of Physics” the students received a certificate of participation.

Open Air Meeting
Last year we began a good tradition spending one of our meetings in the open air. This year we spent our informal eeting in “Symphony of Stones”, which is located near Garni emple (1st century AD). mt
“Symphony of Stones”, natural monument, located in Garni valley, is unique for its volcanic basalt columns of various sizes, which look like an organ, that is why the monument is called “Symphony of Stones”.

1) The most important of our activities is the organization:
Internationa Symposium on l
O P T I C S & its applications
5 9 2011 September,
Yerevan Ashtarak, Armenia
The forthcoming Symposium is dedicated to the 5th anniversary of the Yerevan State
University & National Academy of Sciences SPIE Student Chapter. This scientific event will provide good opportunity for optics & photonics field scientists and industrial companies for information exchange. The objective of this symposium is to bring together xperienced and young scientists working on various aspects of optics, to discuss the most recent evelopments in that area.
