IF EVACUATION IS RECOMMENDED: (CONTINUED)• Take only what you need most, including: this phone book, clothes, personal hygiene items,

eyeglasses, medicine and prescriptions, baby supplies, cash, identification, checkbookand credit cards, portable radio, flashlight, batteries, bottled water, ready to eat food, important papers and household pets.

• Where possible, shelter livestock. Leave them with food and water.• Lock windows and doors. Leave your house as you would if you were going on a short trip.• Use normal routes to Benbrook, Cleburne or Stephenville unless directed by Law Enforcement to go

another direction.• Keep your car’s vents and windows closed while driving within 10 miles of the power plant. If you use

your car air conditioning, set it on “inside” or “maximum” so it does not pull in outside air.• No guns or alcohol will be allowed in the reception centers.• If you are hurt or sick, go to the nearest hospital or ask the police for help.• Police will be able to help you with other evacuation needs.• Evacuated zones will be road blocked. You must get permission to enter an evacuated zone.• When the emergency ends, instructions on returning will be announced over radio station WBAP

820 AM, WBAP 96.7 FM, or KFJZ 870 AM (en Español).• For information concerning crops or livestock, contact the County Extension Agent.

IF SHELTER IN PLACE IS RECOMMENDED:• Go inside, close all windows and doors.• Turn off your heating or cooling systems and fans IF they pull in outside air.• Listen to the Emergency Alert System (EAS) on radio station WBAP 820 AM, WBAP 96.7 FM,

or KFJZ 870 AM (en Español).• Stay inside until officials say it is safe to go out.

SPECIAL EVACUATION GROUPS• School-children will be evacuated, if necessary, to Cleburne High School, 1501 Harlin Dr., Cleburne;

Henderson Junior High School, 2798 W. Frey St., Stephenville; or the Wetern Hills High School,3600 Boston Ave., Fort Worth; or other locations as determined by local school officials. The EAS, radio station WBAP 820 AM, WBAP 96.7 FM, or KFJZ 870 AM (en español), will tell parents where to meet their children. In most cases they will be relocated prior to your arrival or evacuation ofthe general public.

• Those in hospitals, nursing homes or needing special care will be taken, if necessary, to similarfacilities outside the evacuation area.

If you need information about these special evacuation groups, or have special needs such astransportation, you should call the Somervell County Sheriff’s office at 254-897-2242, or theHood County Sheriff’s office at 817-579-3307.

EMERGENCY CLASSIFICATIONSA Comanche Peak plant emergency would be classified by its seriousness.

• NOTIFICATION OF UNUSUAL EVENT:A minor problem. There would be no danger to the public.

• ALERT:Also a problem which will not require protection outside of plant property.Schools may be evacuated.

• SITE AREA EMERGENCY:A more serious problem that may require protective measures at the plant site.Schools may be evacuated.

• GENERAL EMERGENCY:This includes the most serious events. A General Emergency may requireevacuation in several protective measure zones.

Ionizing Radiation

Radiation is energycoming from certain atoms inthe form of invisible particlesor rays.

Our exposure to radiationcomes from both natural andman-made sources. Whethernatural or man-made, radiation’seffect upon living tissue is identical. In the human body, energyfrom radiation — also called “ionizingradiation” — may damage or killcells. The higher the radiation dosethe greater the risk.

Radiation exposure is measured in unitscalled millirems — one thousandth of a rem.Every year each of us in the United States receives about360 millirems of ionizing radiation from natural andman-made sources. The amount varies depending on how and where we live.

Natural sources of radiation account for about 295 of those 360 millirems, or about 82 percent of the total. They include doses from naturally-occurring radioactive radon gas in our environment, radioactive elementsin our bodies and the soil, and cosmic radiation from space.

Man-made sources of radiation account for the remaining 65 millirems, about 18 percent of our yearlyexposure. They include doses from medical and dental x-rays, nuclear medicine, consumer products, occupational exposure, weapons testing fall-out, and nuclear power plants. Of our total exposure each year, less than 0.1 percent, one-third of one millirem, comes from the country’s nuclear power plants.

When the radiation exposure is controlled and kept to a minimum, such as with medical or dental x-rays,nuclear medicine or monitored occupational exposure, the benefits well outweigh any risks.

If an accident were to occur at a nuclear plant, exposure to radiation is possible if the accident were severeenough. A nuclear explosion cannot happen in a nuclear generating plant, but radiation exposure resultingfrom a breach of the various boundaries that separate us from the radioactive material in the plant ispossible. If this did happen, protection of the public in the areas surrounding the plant might requireevacuation of homes, schools and businesses. If you were to be in an affected zone, your county officials wouldrecommend what action to take and communicate this information to you via the Emergency Alert System.

The decision by your county officials to recommend evacuation or sheltering, would be based upon theprojected amount of radioactive material released and/or the duration of the release. Officials at theComanche Peak power plant and the Texas Department of State Health Services would recommend tocounty officials what protective actions they consider best to protect the health and safety of the public.

If you are interested in learning more about radiation and nuclear power, you’re invited to call 254-897-5554regarding the Comanche Peak Visitors Center at the power plant, located on Farm Road 56 five milesnorth of Glen Rose. The visitors center has displays and exhibits that explain how nuclear energygenerates electricity.
