The Amazing Woodpecker By: Have Fun Teaching

The woodpecker is an interesting and amazing bird. It has a strong, pointed beak that acts as a hammer to remove bark from trees and find insects to eat. It has a very long tongue, up to four inches long, that is sticky on the tip for catching insects.

Most birds have one toe pointing back and three pointing forward on each foot. Woodpeckers are a little bit different. They have two sharp claws pointing back and two sharp claws pointing forward on each foot to help them hold on to the sides of trees.

The life span of a woodpecker is 4-11 years. Their favorite foods are insects, fruit, acorns and nuts. These awesome birds live in forests and wooded areas with lots of trees. Woodpeckers can be found all over the world, except in Australia.

Broken Computer Story By: Andrew Frinkle

“Ahhhhh!” Greg screamed. “This silly computer has

broken again.” He shouted to the next room. If mom heard him and came running, maybe he’d have some sympathy.

Greg pounded on the keyboard. Nothing worked. He played with the power switch, but the lights wouldn’t even come on. Fuming, he got up and stomped off to the kitchen.

“Mother!” He growled, ripping open the fridge door. He spied a soda. Maybe that would cool his nerves. He cracked it open and guzzled half of it.

“Mother!” He shouted again. He went looking for her. It was weird that she didn’t answer. He had a problem. Why wasn’t she coming?

He found her upstairs doing the laundry and ironing dad’s shirts. She was humming to herself and seemed pretty happy.

“What are you doing?” Greg demanded. “Laundry.” She answered. “I was calling you.” “I thought if you really needed me, you’d come find me.” Greg snorted and finished his soda. “The computer is broken.” “I’m sorry. Can you fix it?” He shrugged. “Maybe. I might have to wait for dad. I don’t know what’s going on this time. It’s

always breaking. Can’t we get a new one?” “Computers don’t grow on trees.” “I know that. That is the oldest and most pointless saying ever.” Greg grumbled. “Did you check the power cord?” Mom suggested. “Of course I…” Greg trailed off. It couldn’t be that simple. He’d been swinging his feet when he

was playing his game. Had he accidentally kicked the cable? He bolted down the stairs and checked. Sure enough, that was it. The first rule of checking

electronics, and his mother had to remind him. How sad. Meekly, he went back upstairs. “I fixed it.” “The power cord, right?” Mom smiled. When he said nothing, she winked. “Guess we don’t

need to buy a new one after all.”

Finding Something to Do Story By: Judie Eberhardt

Jessie was so bored one summer day in June.

She wanted something different to do. What can I do that would be fun but different she asked

herself. She was tired of watching T.V., she read all

her books, and her friends were on vacation.

Suddenly, she saw the lawn mower sitting in the

garage. Jessie noticed the lawn was tall and shaggy

looking.  “Mom,”  she  yelled.“I  think  I  will  mow  the  lawn.”  Her  mom  ran  into  the  garage  and  said,  “Oh  no  you  don’t.”  “You’re  too  young  to mow the

lawn.”  Jessie  said,  “I’m  ten  years  old  and  know  how to do it.”“Besides,  it  would  help  Dad  out,  and  he  won’t  have  to  worry  about it over  the  weekend.”

Mom was very hesitant, but she decided to let Jessie give it a try. After all, she was

home and would keep an eye on her. Jessie already knew how to start the lawn mower from

watching her Dad. She was a real pro. She checked the gas to make sure it was full, had on her

sneakers for safety, and even put on her gardening gloves to protect her hands. Mom watched

from the kitchen window. Wow, she thought to herself. Jessie really does know how to mow

the lawn. She was very careful around the flowers and trees. When she finished, she felt so

good, but she was so hot. Mom brought her some ice tea and said, “You  sure  did  a  great  job.”  “Dad  will  be  very  surprised.”

Later  that  day,  Dad  came  home  and  said  to  Jessie’s  mom,  “You  didn’t  have  to  mow  the  lawn.”  “I  was  going  to  do  it  on  Satuday.”  “It  looks  great  though.”  “Thanks.”    “I  didn’t  mow  it,  Jessie  did.”  “Wow,  our  little  girl  is  growing  up!”  Dad  told  Jessie  what  a  great  job  she  did.  “It  was  fun,  and  I  will  do  it  again  next  week,”  said  Jessie.  The  neighbor  next  door  came  by  and  asked Jessie if she wanted to  mow  his  lawn  and  make  some  money.  “Sure!”  said  Jessie. Jessie

began mowing their lawn, and then two other neighbors asked also. Jessie was now mowing

lawns for three neighbors and making some money on her summer vacation. She was no

longer bored! I  won’t  have  time  to  spend  my  money, she laughed to herself.

My First Airplane Trip Story By: Judie Eberhardt

School was finally out. Now I will get to

go to California to visit my favorite aunt,

Aunt Helen. Aunt Helen came to our house

two years ago, and now that I am a big girl, I

am going to fly to her house all by myself!

I’m so excited. Mom was going to take me to

the airport and stay until the plane left the

ground. I didn’t know what to expect. Mom

and Dad told me how the fly attendants would make sure I was in the correct seat and even

ask me what I wanted to drink.

The next day, we were off to the airport. Mom showed me the way to the security

checkpoint. Then a lady at the gate checked my ticket and into the big plane I went. Another

lady helped me find my seat and put my bag in the overhead compartment. Next, I buckled up

and was ready for takeoff. The pilot came on the loud speaker and told everyone to prepare

for takeoff. That’s  when I became so scared! No one told me that the plane would be so high

in the air so fast! All the houses and cars looked like tiny ants. For a moment, I lost my breath,

because I was so scared. The flight attendant could see that I was afraid. She came over and

sat next to me in the empty seat. “Are you OK?” she asked. “Yes, just a bit scared because this

is my first airplane trip.” “I see,” answered the flight attendant. “There is nothing to be afraid

of.” “Just sit back and relax.” “Try to enjoy the view.” “What is your name?” “I’m Linda.” She

then brought me a soda to drink. After drinking my soda, I fell asleep for a while, until I heard

the pilot say, “Prepare for landing.” “The temperature in Los Angeles is 75 degrees and sunny.”

With that announcement, I knew I was almost to Los Angeles and that Aunt Helen would be

waiting for me at the gate when I got off the plane. As I went down the plane and into the

airport, I saw Aunt Helen waiting for me by the ticket counter. I ran to her, and she gave me a

big hug. “Did you enjoy your first airplane trip?” asked Aunt Helen. “I did, but it was a little

scary at first.” “The nice flight attendant took good care of me,” said Linda. “I’m looking

forward to the flight home.” “Hold it just a minute,” said Aunt Helen. “You just got here, and

we have a week of fun things to do.” “You can’t run home too soon. Linda smiled a big smile.
