Drobeta-Turnu Severin was founded on the site of Drobeta, an ancient town believed to be the oldest Roman settlementin Romania. Nearby are the ruins of a bridge across the Danube, erected (A.D. 103) by Emperor Trajan.
The Danube enters the territory of Romania at the famous Iron Gates 1 plant and dam, just few minutes drive fromDrobeta Turnu Severin.
