Coral Live 2017 is a unique interactive encounter with marine scientists
and explorers live from field research in Bermuda.
The event is part of the award-winning XL Catlin Oceans Education
programme and connects thousands of students and teachers globally.
Since 2014, researchers and explorers working in the most fragile environments inspired over 28,000 students globally during our live
education events.
The first Coral Live event, in 2015, connected 3,000 students across four continents directly to the heart of the Coral Triangle in Timor-Leste.

INTRODUCTION: WHEN?
Between 30th October and 10th November 2017, the Coral Live team
led by Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop, Digital Explorer’s Director, will work with classes internationally, introducing them to the life and wonders of the
coral reef, the importance of this amazing habitat and the work that is being done to conserve it for future generations.
Classes can join the event in two ways:
1. 80 x 30-minute Q&A style video conferences with a main presenter or ocean researcher (via Google Hangouts Meet, an instant video
conversation and messaging app)
2. 12 x 45-minute YouTube Live broadcasts with a guest speaker (video broadcast and live chat for questions)
in partnership with
The oceans are undeniably important:
- They produce 50% of the oxygen we breathe.
- 98% of the living space on the planet is in the ocean.
- 1.2 billion people rely on the ocean for their protein.
- The ocean regulates our climate.
- Coral reefs cover just less than 2% of the ocean, but support 25% of marine life.
Coral Live 2017
- Connects your students to coral and marine science through live
chats and virtual reality content.
- Makes STEM teaching real and engaging.
INTRODUCTION: WHY?

STEP 2: DISCOVER
Digital Explorer has a variety of lessons and activities to prepare your
class available from oceans.digitalexplorer.com/resources. These are suitable for teaching ‘Living Things’ and ‘Ecosystems’ for ages 7-14.
These are free to download after a short registration process.
in partnership with
Enthuse your classroom with a range of multimedia available on the
Oceans Education website.
1. 360VR galleries of the reef: 360vr.OceansEducation.com
2. Videos demonstrating hands-on activities and life on the expedition
can be found on the Digital Explorer Media Zone at
media.digitalexplorer.com and as a YouTube playlist: bit.ly/CO-YT.
3. The Chasing Coral documentary was filmed during the XL Catlin
Seaview Survey, on which the Coral Oceans resources are based.
STEP 2: DISCOVER
in partnership with
To make the best out of the Q&A with the Coral Live team, help your
students formulate searching questions (i.e. non-Googleable questions such as “Where is the Great Barrier Reef?” or “How deep is the
ocean?”).
Challenge the guest speakers by asking them more open questions:
STEP 3: PREPARE
Have you discovered a new underwater species?
What causes oceans to become acid?
What do you miss most about home while on expedition?
What kind of research do you do?
What can we do to improve the health of the oceans?
in partnership with
Once your students have prepared their questions, let the team know
the main ones so they can prepare beforehand.
Three days in advance of your confirmed live session, send an email to
[email protected] with some of your students’ questions mentioning your name and school.
The Digital Explorer team will keep the host in Bermuda and guest
speakers informed.
If you registered for the YouTube live session, you will be able to write
the questions one by one in the live chat window (see slide 11 for details).
