From the Editor:

In the 60s to the 70s, a phenomenon of sorts occurred caused by the Vietnam War.

With artists like Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix, concerts like

Woodstock, musicals like “Hair” and slogans like “Make Love, Not War”, the

hippie movement that promoted liberal ideas and loosened morality caused

youthful angst and anti-establishment protests and riots. The religious and other

conservative institutions had never seen such a challenge to the bond among

family members, to the norms of society, and even to the stability of nations.

The rock musical, “Jesus Christ Superstar” was one product of that generation.

Depicting Christ like a leader of a bunch of hippies, glamorizing Judas Escariot and

highlighting the relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, commentators

called it “blasphemous”, “offensive”, “Anti-Semitic” and “irreligious”. Based on

the concept album released one year earlier, JC Superstar opened in Broadway on

October 12, 1971. Not only did it gain Tony Awards; it produced popular songs

such as “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Superstar”; was turned into a

movie; introduced outstanding musicians like composer Andrew Lloyd Webber,

lyricist Tim Rice and pop star Yvonne Elliman; and became a staple play through

the years.

CORD, therefore, celebrates the 40th anniversary of Jesus Christ Superstar. It was

a musical far ahead of its time, having incorporated rock music, creating purely

songs throughout the presentation, and bringing the Gospel to a contemporary

atmosphere.

While the criticisms against JC Superstar seemed right in the 70s, in hindsight, we

should be thankful for the Webber-Rice collaboration (also responsible for “Evita”)

for bringing to popular culture the story of our salvation through Jesus Christ.

Love Peace and Harmony,

Bro Mel B Libre

JESUS CHRIST

SUPERSTAR: The Greatest Rock Story Ever Told

In June 1971, students at the Southold High School in Southold,

New York put out a stage version of a concept album released the

previous year called “Jesus Christ Superstar”. The album

contained songs composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics

by Tim Rice. The rock flavoured album featured Ian Gillan,

lead singer of Deep Purple, as Jesus Christ, Murray Head as

Judas and Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene.

Word spread like wildfire about the brilliant album that numerous

commercial, community and schools adopted this for their own stage

productions; only to be shut down as the authors filed lawsuits to protect their copyright. On October

12, 1971, the official production opened in Broadway and it closed on June 30, 1973 after 711

performances.

Jesus Christ Superstar covers the week leading towards Christ‘s Crucifixion; and gives prominence to

the relationships of Christ and Judas, as well as that with Mary Magdalene. Tim Rice caused

controversy when he said, ―It happens that we don‘t see Christ as God but simply the right man at the

right time at the right place.‖ Even if that was his intention, the story of Jesus Christ as God and

Saviour becomes obvious as it reaches the finale. Through the years, JC Superstar has been

performed in nearly every nook and corner of the world, and in a number of instances, by religious-

administered schools.

Webber and Rice actually became instruments in evangelisation by the retelling of the suffering of

Christ through popular music and a contemporary setting. It may be interesting to note that prior to

JC Superstar, they collaborated in an earlier work, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor

Dreamcoat” taken from the Old Testament. Webber wrote in 1982, a Requiem Mass dedicated to his

father William that premiered at St Thomas Church in New York in 1985.

The success of the rock opera spawned a critically acclaimed movie version, and a fresh new take by

Webber‘s Really Useful Production released in 2000. Ian Gillan never made it to any of the stage

presentations of JC Superstar nor did Murray Head (who made a hit song, “One Day in Bangkok”

taken from the musical Chess). Yvonne Elliman produced hit songs herself, “Love Me”, “Moment by

Moment” and the Billboard No. 1 hit “If I Don’t Have You” from the album Saturday Night Fever.

(See separate feature)

Page 10: CORD

CORD Vol 2 No. 1 July 2011 Page 10

From the album to the stage and finally the movie version in 1973, Elliman effectively played the role

of Mary Magdalene. Ted Neeley who auditioned for the part of Judas, but given the role of Jesus in

the film version, is the most consistent actor in JC Superstar. Neeley released a solo album, 1974

A.D., that failed to make it to charts. He had previously played the lead role in the Broadway musical

―Hair” and the Who‘s “Tommy”; and after his success in JC Superstar, he took the role of Billy

Shears in ―Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road” in New York. He acted in television

and films, but the road led him back to JC Superstar in its long-running tours that ended in 2010.

Currently he is set to do “Rasputin” and “Murder in the Firstare”, and working to get his own

musical “Pandemonium” in Broadway.

Quite a number of alumni

of JC Superstar made

names for themselves in

popular music. Paul

Jabara (in the original

Broadway production)

became a successful

record producer (Donna

Summer‘s ―Last Dance‖

and Barbra Streisand‘s

"No More Tears (Enough

Is Enough)". Paul

Nicholas (who played

Jesus in the London

production) recorded the

hit song, ―Heaven in the

7th

Floor‖ and played in

most of the UK production of such popular musicals as Grease, Camelot, Tommy, and The Pirates of

Penzance. Agnetha Faltskog (who played the role of Mary Magdalene in the Swedish production)

would later become a member of ABBA.

Other popular artists played roles in later productions. As Jesus: John Farnham (lead singer of Little

River Band), Sebastian Bach (lead singer of Skid Row) and Gary Cherone (lead singer of Extreme

(‗More than Words) and Van Halen). As Judas, Corey Glover (lead singer of Living Colour). As

Pilate, Dennis de Young (of the Styx). As Mary Magdalene, Syreeta (who co-wrote songs with Stevie

Wonder) and Irene Cara (who sang the theme song of ‗Fame‘).

JC Superstar has taken most of the lifetime of Ted Neeley in playing the role of Jesus, as the demand

for the staging of the greatest story ever told never ends. As we celebrate the 4oth anniversary of the

Broadway production of JC Superstar, we are certain that this musical will outlive its authors, its

actors and all those responsible in its staging for it has in the starring role the one and only true

Superstar of past, of the present, of the future – for all of time: Jesus Christ. (CORD)

Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Yvonne Elliman started her career in 1969 singing at bars

and clubs in London, waiting for the big break. That break came earlier than later when Tim

Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber were searching for a fresh talent to sing the part of Mary

Magdalene in a concept album called “Jesus Christ Superstar:.

From the album, she went on to play the role in Broadway production and put her indelible imprint on

the screen in the 1973 film version of JC Superstar. While Helen Reddy brought “I Don’t Know How

to Love Him” to the top of pop chart, but it is Elliman‘s original version that contains the genuine

emotion of the most recognizable song from JC Superstar.

Under the wings of impresario Robert Stigwood who had the acumen of an entrepreneur and the gift

of discovering talent, Elliman established her credentials by doing backup vocals for Eric Clapton in

the now-classic version of ―I Shot the Sheriff‖. She attained pop star status in 1976 with "Love Me"

(written by Barry and Robin Gibb), and a Barbara Lewis cover, "Hello Stranger”. The major break

came in 1977 with generation-defining album, Saturday Night Fever that contained her number 1

song, “If I Can’t Have You”, and if not for Robert Stigwood insisting that the Bee Gees record it, she

would have recorded “How Deep Is Your Love” written for her by the Barry and Robin Gibb.

The backlash on disco that followed in the 80s affected every artist who had connections to the

commercialised electronic music – from the Van McCoy to Giorgio Moroder, from Donna Summer to

Yvonne Elliman – even the Bee Gees became a despised breed, though no fault of their own.

Knowing the futility of pursuing further hit songs, Elliman disappeared from the pop scene, attending

Page 17: CORD

instead what was most dear - her family. In a few instances, she took on her role as Mary Magdalene

in productions of Jesus Christ Superstar. Her rebirth came in 2004, when she released the album

Simple Needs that contains songs she had written through the years. On June 12, 2007 the album was

released globally, as she became active once more in music festivals, concerts and benefit

appearances. A treasure of a talent, Yvonne Elliman cannot, simply be hidden. (CORD)

CORD BEST 5: U2 is one of the durable rock bands on earth. It attracts hordes of fans in its

concerts wherever it takes its music. The band has taken their music to the screen

through one of the Batman films, and in Broadway, with Spiderman: Turn Off the

Dark, the most expensive musical ever.

CORD lists its

choice of the best

U2 songs in this

issue. The CORD

team had a hard

time trimming down

to five the brilliant

anthems from Bono

& Company through

more than three

decades.

We could have

included ―One‖,

―Where the Streets

Have No Name‖,

―Vertigo‖ and

―Pride (In the Name

of Love)‖. But there were 5 others that stood out.

The list would be incomplete without ―New Year‘s Day‖ (# 5). The reflective message

of ―I Still Haven‘t Found What I‘m Looking For‖ (#4) penetrates both heart and mind.

Who cannot burst with life when the chorus part of ―Beautiful Day‖ (#3) blares on the

radio? The feet-stomping ―Sunday Bloody Sunday‖ (#2) can easily raise our fists and

lead us to march in protest.

―With or Without You‖ (#1) shines from the rest, from the slow drawl at the beginning

to the infectious refrain – it is hypnotic. Each individual can have a different take on its

meaning, from romantic to spiritual. It is a song both personal and universal, truly a

gem above the rest of U2‘s music treasures. (CORD)

I Believe

Speech delivered by Bro Andrew Quirke during the Teachers in Sandals Fellowship

Teaching Night on 16 May 2011in Newman Hall, Waterloo Quadrant, Auckland, New Zealand

What do I believe? Have I just grown up as a Catholic and been told these truths or do I truly believe in what I have been told and come to know? It is a question that I have asked myself from time to time

growing up as a Catholic. However I know today that the Catholic Faith is the one true faith the one true church and that it is the Church Jesus our Lord and Saviour instituted and gave Peter the keys to before He

joined his Father in Heaven and where He now sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. I also believe that He did not leave us orphaned for He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us and guide us and the Church itself until the day He comes again.

I will explain to you what I believe, starting off on who I believe in and finishing off by what I believe in. Along the way I will also share with you times in my life where my beliefs were confirmed. I believe there

is one God, existing eternally in three persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

As Matthew 19:26 says ―I believe that with God, all things are possible.‖ I believe God is Love and that he loves all people. I believe that he reaches out to all of us through the sacraments of the church. Through each sacrament we are given the grace of God and drawn closer to him. Each sacrament is a visible sign of

God‘s unconditional love for us. A visible sign where God comes to us, enters into our life, and brings us closer to him through his grace.

I believe that God is our Heavenly Father this portrays to me that our God has an intimate relationship with as, as our Father and we are his children. I believe that God is the first origin of everything and transcendent authority; and at the same time, he offers us love and care and tenderness as only a Father

could. We see an example of the love our Father offers through our own parents, who show us the same love and kindness.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord. I believe that Christ was the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us. I believe that He came to reveal the Father and to confirm the promises made. I

believe in the Atonement: that He Who knew no sin became sin for us and that by His sacrifice. He not only offered salvation to all mankind, He has reconciled the world unto Himself and has redeemed His people. I also believe that he is our Lord this means to me that I am but a humble servant of Christ and that

he is undisputed master over my life and that he is worthy of all praise and worship. He is also the ―only Son of God‖ which means that Jesus‘ relationship to God is different than ours. Jesus is truly both Man

and God. He is as the Bible informs us: ―Son of Man‖ and ―Son of God‖. I believe in the Holy Spirit the last person of the trinity although the Holy Spirit has always been and will

always be. Once Jesus left this earth the Holy Spirit took over the role of being the witness to the glory of Christ to God and at Pentecost the spirit came down and upon the disciples so that they could be the new witnesses and leaders of the faith.

The final person I believe in is Mary although not part of the trinity she holds an important role as our

heavenly queen and mediatrix of all graces. I believe that Mary is our Heavenly Mother as the Bible tells us in the Gospel of John 19:2627 When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your

mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. It is at that moment that Mary becomes Mother of all disciples of Jesus, including those in our own time who follow Jesus.

In my life over the last 10 years that has been times where I have needed the comfort and love that only a mother can provide, being in the Army and living overseas. I have not had the luxury of being near my

own Mum but through the love of Mary and her intercession I have been comforted and well looked after. I have to say after having almost left the church at one stage in my life it was Mary through her love that she has shown me that has made me the strong Catholic I am

today.

What do I believe in? I believe in the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church It is

through these 4 marks of the Church that I believe that the Catholic Church is indeed the one True Church instituted by our Lord himself. Jesus established only one Church, not a collection

of differing churches (Lutheran, Baptist, Anglican, and so on). The Bible says the Church is the bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:23-

32). Jesus can have but one spouse, and his spouse is the Catholic Church. Being one is not a loose collection of parts, it‘s an organic whole. It has a head, voice, heart, hands and feet. The

head is the Holy Father, who guides the Church with the mind of Christ. The voice is the Magisterium, the teaching authority of the Church. At the heart of the Church are the Sacraments, which

nourish the body of the Church. The hands and feet are each of us, who reach out to the world and take with us the love of God.

By His Grace, Jesus makes the Church holy, just as He is holy. The Church itself is holy because it is the source of holiness and

is the guardian of the special means of grace Jesus established, the sacraments. The term ―catholic‖ means ―universal.‖ The Church is ―catholic‖ because the same full Gospel is preached

everywhere. The Church Jesus founded is apostolic because He appointed the apostles to be the first leaders of the Church, and their successors were to be its future leaders. The apostles were the first bishops, and, since the first century, there has been an unbroken line of

Catholic bishops faithfully handing on what the apostles taught the first Christians in Scripture and Sacred Tradition.

I also believe that the most important parts of our Faith are the Sacraments. They point to what is sacred, significant and important for us. They are special occasions for experiencing God's saving presence and his

love. Important is Baptism, as it is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. Eucharist, through Christ's Body and Blood, we are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God. Reconciliation as no matter what we have done through it, we find God's unconditional forgiveness. And

lastly the Holy Orders where priests are ordained to lead other Catholics by bringing them the sacraments by proclaiming the Gospel, and by providing other means to holiness. I remember the first time I saw an

ordination. It was one of the most beautiful scenes I witnessed: when a priest prostrates himself in front of the altar of the cross and offers his life completely to Christ.

Although I could keep going, about what I believe, I will finish off with this final thought: Jesus lets us know about an important aspect of our Faith for blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed. I believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, I believe in Mary our Mother and that Christ instituted

the Catholic Church. At the end of the day however there are many things that confuse me, or areas in my life where I don‘t

know what I believe. I leave everything to faith and believe that God will guide me in the right direction. I leave my life in his hands.

Amen.

Oprah is the Queen of Talk, Madonna the Queen of Pop. Amy Grant is the

Queen of Christian Pop.

What does it take to be elevated to music royalty? It definitely is not by inheritance. It is more to do

with talent, popularity and durability.

Five weeks shy of sweet 16, Grant notched a recording contract, when a producer heard one of her

compositions, “Mountain Man”. In 1977, she released her first album ―Amy Grant” followed in

1979 “My Father’s Eyes”. Several albums later, in 1982, she finally got full attention through the

album “Age to Age” that contained the anthem, “El Shaddai”. The gauge of talent is recognition

by peers and this she had countless, to mention some: six Grammys; 25 GMA Dove

Awards, culminating in Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2003; and inducted in the Hollywood walk

of fame in 2005.

Page 31: CORD

CORD Vol 2 No. 1 July 2011 Page 31

While her songs became staples on Christian radio stations, some of these crossed over the

mainstream. She reached mass appeal with“Baby, Baby” that took no 1 in the Billboard Hot

100 Singles chart. Other pop hits followed: "Every Heartbeat" (#2), "That's What Love Is

For"(#7), "Good For Me" (#8), and "I Will Remember You" (#20).

But the longevity of Grant‘s career is reflected in the non-stop releases of new albums and sold out

concerts and gigs, including the 2010 Christmas tour with husband country music star, Vince Gill.

Also in 2010, she came out with the album Somewhere Down the Road, that produced the hit

single "Better Than a Hallelujah", No. 8 on Billboard's Top Christian Songs chart.

On her latest work, she said, ―(M)y hope is just

for those songs to provide companionship, remind

myself and whoever else is listening what‘s

important. I feel like songs have the ability to

connect us to ourselves and to each other, and to

our faith, to the love of Jesus, in a way that

conversation doesn‘t do. Songs kind of slip in and

move you before you realize it."

Her profound thoughts come from a career

spanning more than 30 years. She recalls how

as a young Christian artist she‘d be asked

about her faith: ―But now it's kind of a given

that a 15-year-old would have a record deal

and sell a quarter of a million records. No

one's expecting her to answer any deep

theological questions. And I'll tell you, I was

asked some deep theological questions from

the git-go.‖

Having accomplished so much, what does she

look forward to? She responds, ―I can look at

the future with anticipation. And it's

comforting to know that someday, as

Christians, we'll be able to look back and have

a little more clarity on why certain things in

life happened.‖ (CORD)

With over 122 million votes for the finalists the Season 10 American Idol

may be geared towards another decade. The New York Daily News just

declared AI as American TV’s most-watched show. And the rest of the

world watched as well, as Scotty McCreery was crowned as this year’s

winner. This year had a mix of talented young people and gifted musicians

that made the competition more interesting.

While there was much talk about the elimination of

dusky beauty Pia Tuscano, it was clear that the real

frontrunners were metal rocker James Durbin, eclectic

performer Casey Adams and soul brother Jacob Lusk.

But these latter three reached their peak weeks prior to

the finals.

James was at his finest

delivering Muse‘s

―Uprising‖, while

Casey upped the ante

each week with his

multi-instrumental talent and patented growl. Jacob‘s shine

dimmed when he decided to take the high notes of the divas,

and shake his booty.

Page 35: CORD

After the dust settled, we saw only three vying for the title, Haley Reinhart, Lauren Alaina

and Scotty McCreery. Haley‘s voice had some resemblance to Bonnie Tyler; but there was

just no certainly on what music genre she could fit. Lauren was the least likely to make it to

the finals, as she was always overshadowed by her co-contestants each week. One blot for her

was when she failed to take the high notes of ―Unchained Melody‖. But she did pretty well

on finals night.

It was Scotty who had the most compelling story this season. No one took him in the group

performances, except for the Guaps, that had Cebuana Monique de los Santos and Fil-Am

Clint Gamboa, the 26-year-old karaoke host with the oversized white designer glasses. That

allowed Scotty to show-off his unique deep baritone voice; but it was his charm and fun

personality that contributed towards his eventual coronation.

We look forward to next season for more music, thrill and fun, hopefully with the three

uncontroversial, repetitive and supportive judges – Steven, J. Lo and Randy. (CORD)

Guitar Heaven Tour March 20, 2011, Auckland, New Zealand

By Alvin Soniega

I grew up to see my older friends jamming the “Black Magic Woman”, not fully

understanding the lyrics and the artist whom I only knew as one of those hippies who

graced the Woodstock. The Latin beat and the frenzy of the percussion players always

amazed me. I used to tap the bums of empty plastic containers in my younger days just

to fancy the swagger of a Latin percussionist.

It is probably the Spanish influence of the Filipinos that draws us to this particular music

genre. Anyway, I got my proper congas, bongos, cowbells, guiros, which made me

experience the art of the Latin percussion and followed the great artists who are legends in

this genre, and foremost in my list is the great Carlos Santana.

On March 20, I managed to book a ticket to see the Guitar Heaven Tour of the legendary

Carlos Santana at the Vector Arena. Although I already bought the Guitar Heaven album last

January, it was amazing to be inside the arena and experience the album in 3D. It was the

typical rock concert that I expect – no frills, just crisp clear sound with matching lights. But

the genius of Santana is prominent from start to the encore.

Aside from the pieces from the Guitar Heaven album, his other hits e.g. Smooth, Maria

Maria, Corazon Espinado, and the classic Black Magic Woman were played with the Santana

virtuosity. Incidentally, he introduced a slender, black woman with afro, who did a wild

magical drum solo, as his wife by the name of Cindy Blackman.

A live concert is one of those frills that I indulge, although quite expensive sometimes, but

the experience of being part of the music just wipes out the cost of the gig. You feast on the

sound of the different instruments live, are amazed at the precision of the instrument changes,

bask in the colours of the lights, and just tune in to the beat, and you can forget that you still

have to drive home safe.

Miss Saigon

June 9, 2011, Civic Theatre, Auckland

Filipinos, like me, are strongly attached to this musical as some of the Philippines‘ finest stage

actors were in the original performance. When one mentions Miss Saigon, the name ―Lea

Salonga‖ comes to mind, who took an Emmy for her performance as Kim, the main character in

an epic love story set at the tail end of the Vietnam War.

But there is more to Miss Saigon than Lea‘s Kim, there are a lot of characters in the musical who

suffered through the brutality of war: the bar girls selling their flesh and dignity; the American

GIs confused in waging a war for Uncle Sam, the Vietcong lover of Kim whose undying affection

brought him to his death and the Engineer pimp with his American Dream.

The Auckland production was not

as grand as those in New York and

London (my wife Debbie saw one

production in New York), but it

did justice to the spectacle that it

was meant to deliver. Amateur

actress Christiana Zhu showed

promise, acting and emoting at the

right moments, though her

articulation proved to be a minus,

as she often ate some of the words.

But yes, she does have a beautiful

singing voice. All the rest of the

actors engaged the audience

through the naughty parts, the

romance, the conflicts and the

tragedy. But it was actor John

Hellyer (playing the role of the

Engineer) who stole the show with

his versatile voice, his flawless delivery and strong stage presence. Bravo!

Since 1989, Miss Saigon is among the longest

running Broadway musicals and has won 30

major awards. It has been seen by over 31 million

people nearly 20 countries. The Auckland

production ascertained that the pivotal sets of the

musical transitioned smoothly from one part to

the next. The movement of props that led towards

the helicopter scene was genius; yet it didn‘t

distract the flow of the story as the well-

orchestrated music reached its crescendo.

Kudos to the North Shore Music Theatre

Company for an outstanding effort! I guess the

next step for this Broadway musical is the

movies. That I can‘t wait to see. (CORD)

this September. In addition to his music, Hall has been the student minister at Eagle‘s Landing Baptist Church

outside of Atlanta for the past 18 years. With co-writer and fellow pastor Tim Luke (author of books such as Your Own Jesus), Hall uses the powerful story of the Woman at the Well and her encounter with

Jesus to help readers understand why life often seems so unsatisfying. What many believers consider wells that sustain them—like success, talent, control, and favor—are really just holes that keep them from

relying upon Jesus and the abundant, refreshing life He offers.

The Charge of the Light Brigade Alfred Lord Tennyson

1.

Half a league, half a league,

Half a league onward,

All in the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred.

"Forward, the Light Brigade!

"Charge for the guns!" he said:

Into the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred.

2.

"Forward, the Light Brigade!"

Was there a man dismay'd?

Not tho' the soldier knew

Someone had blunder'd:

Theirs not to make reply,

Theirs not to reason why,

Theirs but to do and die:

Into the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred.

3.

Cannon to right of them,

Cannon to left of them,

Cannon in front of them

Volley'd and thunder'd;

Storm'd at with shot and shell,

Boldly they rode and well,

Into the jaws of Death,

Into the mouth of Hell

Rode the six hundred.

4.

Flash'd all their sabres bare,

Flash'd as they turn'd in air,

Sabring the gunners there,

Charging an army, while

All the world wonder'd:

Plunged in the battery-smoke

Right thro' the line they broke;

Cossack and Russian

Reel'd from the sabre stroke

Shatter'd and sunder'd.

Then they rode back, but not

Not the six hundred.

5.

Cannon to right of them,

Cannon to left of them,

Cannon behind them

Volley'd and thunder'd;

Storm'd at with shot and shell,

While horse and hero fell,

They that had fought so well

Came thro' the jaws of Death

Back from the mouth of Hell,

All that was left of them,

Left of six hundred.

6.

When can their glory fade?

O the wild charge they made!

All the world wondered.

Honor the charge they made,

Honor the Light Brigade,

Noble six hundred.

St. Patrick

Feast day: March 17

Patron of Ireland

b. 387 d.461

St. Patrick was born at Kilpatrick, near

Dumbarton, in Scotland, in the year 387;

His parents were Calpurnius and Conchessa,

who were Romans living in Britain in charge

of the colonies.

As a boy of fourteen, he was captured during

a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a

slave to herd and tend sheep. Ireland at this

time was a land of Druids and pagans. He

learned the language and practices of the

people who held him.

During his captivity, he turned to God in

prayer. He wrote:

"The love of God and his fear grew in me

more and more, as did the faith, and my soul

was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have

said as many as a hundred prayers and in

the night, nearly the same." "I prayed in the

woods and on the mountain, even before

dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or

rain."

Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty,

when he escaped after having a dream from

God in which he was told to leave Ireland by

going to the coast. There he found some

sailors who took him back to Britain, where

he reunited with his family.

He had another dream in which the people of

Ireland were calling out to him "We beg

you, holy youth, to come and walk among us

once more."

He began his studies for the priesthood. He

was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop

of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for

years.

Later, Patrick was ordained a bishop, and

was sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. He

arrived in Ireland March 25, 433, at Slane.

Patrick began preaching the Gospel

throughout Ireland, converting many. He and

his disciples preached and converted

thousands and began building churches all

over the country. Kings, their families, and

entire kingdoms converted to Christianity

when hearing Patrick's message.

Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland

for 40 years. He worked many miracles and

wrote of his love for God in Confessions. He

used the shamrock to explain the Trinity,

and has been associated with him and the

Irish since that time.

After years of living in poverty, traveling

and enduring much suffering he died at Saul,

Downpatrick, Ireland, 17 March, 461.

Green Pasture (Published on April 11, 2011)

I was deeply troubled. You see, I learned that four of my friends, who have strong faith in

God and commitment to their respective ministries, lost their jobs. These individuals have

great people skills, possess good leadership qualities and are professionally competent, yet

their companies let go of them at the tail-end of the economic downturn.

But what was amazing was how they coped up with their unemployment status. Two of

those, who are a couple, took their misfortune in stride, and channelled their talents to happily

serve in their parish. The other one remained positive in life, keeping a happy disposition at

home and with friends. The fourth attended to brethren in the ministry he heads, confident

that God will take care of him and his family.

Joblessness and adversity can lead to personal crisis

and depression. But there are those who weather

through the storm.

They know that there is a God who directs the

universe. “And there arose a great storm of wind,

and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship,

asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say

unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto

the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and

there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why

are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?”

(Mark 4:28-40)

They recognize that there is a God who knows each

individual to whom He breathes life. “But even the

very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not

therefore: ye are of more value than many

sparrows.” (Luke 12:7)

I prayed for my friends. I found peace within me,

confident that they have taken refuge in God who

leads them to green pasture. “I am the door: by me

if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go

in and out, and find pasture.” (John 10:9)

The Greedy Frog* There once lived a greedy frog in a pond in

Lasang. He thought only of himself that he

ate most of the food in the pond leaving

others only with crumbs.

Since there was little food left in the pond, he went to the nearby lagoon where food was

abundant. The creatures of the lagoon welcomed frog to their territory, not knowing that he was

greedy. In no time, frog did what he used to do in the pond. He thought only of himself that he ate

most of the food in the lagoon leaving the others only with crumbs.

But still he was hungry. He looked up and noticed the mountain above. Frog announced to the

other creatures in the lagoon that he would go to the peak of the mountain. He would be the first

frog to do so and that would make him the greatest frog in Lasang. Being the only frog to go up

the mountain, he knew that there would be plenty of food for him to eat as he travelled. And so

up he went.

It was a long journey. But frog did not mind, for he was too busy eating new kinds of food that he

had never seen in the pond or in the lagoon. Yet, he found the trek exhausting. He failed to realize

that his body had ballooned and that he was carrying such a heavy weight. Still, he continued to

travel slowly, wanting to prove that he was the greatest frog in Lasang.

Many days, many nights, frog ate and hopped towards the peak of the mountain. And finally, he

was there. He looked down below and he could see the pond, the lagoon and the trail that he took.

In his loudest croak, he shouted, ―I am the greatest frog of all!‖ Nobody in the pond or in the

lagoon heard him. Yet his loud croak startled many creatures near the mountain.

One of the creatures noticed frog. The creature flew above the mountain peak. Frog looked up

and saw the creature moving high above him. It looked like one of the many strange insects that

he had devoured during his journey. Frog, greedy as he was, prepared his tongue to catch the

prey. The prey moved closer and closer. And frog noticed that the prey was growing bigger and

bigger. To his surprise, Frog realized that the prey was a huge eagle looking for food. Frog leaped

forward to hide, but then his thin legs

could not carry his huge body. Eagle

swooped down and caught the greedy

frog with his sharp and strong claws.

That day, eagle ate the biggest frog in

Lasang.

No Parking

A priest parked his car in a no-parking zone in Auckland because he was short of time and could not

find a space with a meter.

Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't

park here, I'll miss my doctor‘s appointment. FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES."

When he returned, he found a citation from a parking warden along with the note: "I've circled this

block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket, I'll lose my job. AMEN.‖

Out Fishing

The priest was concerned: ―I didn't see you in church last Sunday, Mr O‘neal. I hear you were out

playing basketball instead.‖

―'That's not true, Father,‖ responded the Shaq, ―And I've got the fish to prove it.‖

Teacher’s Talk

Teacher: Peter, why are you doing your math multiplication on the floor?

Peter: You told me to do it without using tables.

Teacher: Now, Simon, tell me frankly, do you say prayers before eating?

Simon: No sir, I don't have to. My Mom is a good cook.

Misbehaviour

John had finished his summer vacation and gone back to primary school. Two days later his teacher

phoned his mother to tell her that he was misbehaving.

"Wait a minute," she said. "I had Johnny with me for three months and I never called you once when

he misbehaved."

Jam Parado, award winning choreographer based in Auckland, New Zealand

Q: You’ve developed a new concept in dance instruction?

A: Yes, it‘s called ―Mash O‘ Rhythm‖.

Q: Can you tell us what it is?

A: It is about mixing of different dance styles between groups of dancers. One group is

assigned one dance style, while another ―challenges‖ the first group on the dance floor.

Oftentimes, it is only through competition that the best performances shine.

Q: Have you done an actual Mash O’ Rhythm?

A: Actually, we did one recently. A group of families who meet periodically in a gathering

called ―Kita Kits‖ asked me to put it together, so I assigned each one dance with music I

provided – and boy was I surprised how they competed with tenacity and teamwork. One

team did ‗Thriller‖complete with masks and costumes, while another assembled an authentic

hip hop group. It was just amazing, how these families took time to get their acts together.

Q: So it is about groups competing against each other?

A: That is just the first part. The second portion allows at least three of the finest dancers

from each group to have a dance-off, with just less than a minute to showcase their best

moves. What a blast!

Q: Did you give inputs to them? A: Ideally, it is best that I teach them the basic steps, and from then on, they can develop their

own styles and show off their originality. However for this first Mash O‘ Rhythm, I was

confident that each of the groups knew the basic steps for their assigned dances.

Q: What makes Mash O’ Rhythm different from others?

A: Mash O‘ Rhythm is a new approach to make dancing not just for physical fitness, but also

social interaction and developing originality. But most importantly, I have made sure that the

competition will conclude in harmony, as it‘ll always end up with a Dance-of-Unity where all

the competitors dance to one beat, one music.

Q: Is this the next big thing, after Zumba?

A: Zumba is a world phenomenon. I‘m just starting, but who knows? I believe this approach

will not just get individuals together in the dance floor, it‘ll bring the whole family, and

that‘s more fun!

It follows the NOTES songwriting process conceptualised by Bro Mel B Libre, songwriter-performer & Lead Servant of TawagAwit, with participants, with or without music background, making original materials inspired by Biblical passages and performing these at the end of the session. Most of the outputs in the Songwriting Wor(k)ship have been sang during masses in parishes where the composers are members of the choir or music group. Be part of this wonderful experience – and sing a new song to the Lord!
