A Special Opportunity for Lent “An Hour of Service”

Many Christians traditionally "give up" something during the Lenten period. This year, the Moorings congregation will be encouraged to “give back” something as well - an hour of volunteer service to a charitable organization or other worthwhile cause. The initiative will be described in the Sunday services on February 7. A booklet will be provided that describes volunteer opportunities at our church’s local “mission partner organizations,” although the volunteering need not be limited to these. Pew cards will also be available throughout Lent for those who wish to share their experiences. This is an exciting opportunity for Moorings to demonstrate widely

our commitment to Jesus’ example and calling, by serving those in need in His name.

Readers’ RendezvousWednesday, February 10

10:00 AM in Strozier Library

Billie Stevens reviews and discusses the book Bold Spirit by Linda Lawrence Hunt. In 1896, a Norwegian immigrant and mother of eight children named Helga Estby was behind on taxes and the mortgage when she learned that a mysterious sponsor would pay $10,000 to a woman who walked across America.

Their treacherous and inspirational journey to New York challenged contemporary notions of femininity and captured the public imagination. But their trip had such devastating consequences that the Estby women's achievement was blanketed in silence until, nearly a century later, Linda Lawrence Hunt encountered their extraordinary story.

Chef Evie Viggiani's Cooking ClassFeaturing Thai Cuisine

Monday, February 8 6:00 PM in Moss Hall

Thai cuisine is one of the most popular and healthy cuisines in the world. It places emphasis on lightly prepared dishes with strong aromatic components, which include fundamental taste senses in each dish or in the overall meal: sour, sweet, salty, bitter, and spicy.

Evie will demonstrate how to bring Thai cuisine into our own kitchens by teaching us how to prepare Tom Yum Gai (Thai Hot & Sour Chicken Soup), Panang Chicken with Jasmine Rice & Steamed Broccoli, and Mango Sticky Rice Pudding. She will use mild spices, and teach us about using “Thai hot” condiments on the side for the daredevils.

The $25 cost includes recipes, delicious samples, and a raffle for some of the foods prepared in class. Space is limited. To reserve a spot contact Kris Doyle at 293-5032 or [email protected], or sign up at kiosk or Reception Desk.

have to do with the poor.

Special Appeals a Success Thank You!

2016 will be brighter for many lives in Guatemala and Haiti because of the generosity of many at Moorings. The 150 people who attended December's Guatemala luncheon learned more about the challenges that country faces and the ways Moorings is helping: through our Jim Smith School & Scholarships initiative; support for Miracles in Action; the Christmas toys drive, and providing water filters and handmade quilts to poor, rural villagers. Forty-three donors and the crafts sale resulted in $14,382 for the Jim Smith School & Scholarships.A special Christmas offering to bring solar power to the new school in the remote village of Larevwa, Haiti, was also very successful. Through the generosity of 76 donors, the goal of $9,400 was reached. This will mean that over 200 children and their teachers will have access to the many learning and teaching resources of the Internet; they can learn English; fans can be put into the hot classrooms; and the school can be used for adult education and skills training in the evenings. Their community now has much more promise for the future, because of Love the Children’s leadership and Moorings’ support.

Thanks to the Congregation from Moorings’ Mission Partner Organizations

This past month, your Mission Outreach Committee communicated to the church's Mission Partner Organizations the fundings they will receive from Moorings in 2016. The following from the leader of one organization is indicative of the appreciation received from all:

“Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, for all you do for our Lord Jesus and His struggling families in our most generous Naples community. God bless you all…”

St. Matthew's House - Justin's Place Graduation Ceremony - Monday, February 29

The Mission Outreach Committee is excited to announce that our church will again be hosting the next graduation event of the St. Matthew's House "Justin’s Place" recovery program. Moorings members are invited to attend this meaningful event, recognizing Justin’s Place graduates on Monday, February 29 at 6:00 PM in the Sanctuary, followed by food and refreshments in Moss Hall prepared by SMH (St. Matthew’s House) Catering. There is no charge for the ceremony event or the meal afterwards.Justin’s Place is a one-year, Christian recovery program incorporating the 12 Steps and their Biblical comparisons. Participation is open to all men and women who want to change their lives. This is an excellent opportunity for Moorings' members to learn more about St. Matthew’s House, a very important mission partner of our church.

“Hope with Help” Luncheon, February 28

A special church-wide luncheon will be held on Sunday, February 28, to learn about and hear from our church’s four mission partner organizations who focus on the hungry and homeless in Collier County: Guadalupe Social Services, Helps Outreach, Meals of Hope, and St. Matthew’s House.

The luncheon and program will begin in Moss Hall at 11:15 and conclude by 12:30. Please sign up on the registration sheet at the Reception Desk, or by calling 261-1487. Donations to help with the cost of the luncheon will be welcomed but are not necessary to attend.

Support Our Youth Summer TripsThe “144 Envelopes” Fundraiser

• There are 144 envelopes. • Each envelope is numbered from 1-144• You choose an envelope, and you donate that

amount of money. It's that simple. • If you choose envelope #5, you donate $5. If you

choose envelope #144, you donate $144. You get the idea, right? What happens if you really want to donate $100, but someone else already took that envelope? Well, choose two envelopes: like #60 and #40.

• If all 144 envelopes are chosen, we will raise over $10,000!

• Envelopes will be available in the Narthex during February.

Last year we were able to raise $3,600.00 with less than half of the envelopes taken. Our goal this year is to have all the envelopes taken so we can help send twice as many youth to Montreat and also plan for other mission experiences.

Reflections of MontreatWhen we first arrived at Montreat all I could see was beauty; rolling hills, spectacular mountains, a peaceful stream, an open lake, a thundering waterfall - a far contrast from the flatland and beaches of Naples. The idea of living here for a week was exciting but nerve-wracking as well. Within 24 hours I would be split up from everyone I knew and put in a group of about 20-30 other people with different backgrounds, personalities and lifestyles, and none of us would know anything about each other. I kept hoping though that everyone would be nice and I could make it through the week, possibly making a few more friends. However, this whole mindset changed after our first worship service that

night. From then on I knew this place was more than just a church camp. At Montreat I had the most incredible opportunity to meet people who have become my inspiration. It helped me open my eyes to the problems of others and how God has worked through their story and my own to teach lessons, help us grow, and to reach out. It taught me that it is ok to cry and share the parts of your life that aren't so good because whether you know it or not, someone else could be going through the same thing you are or that your story could save someone's life. This place also allowed growth in my own faith and relationship with God and with my youth group as well. It taught me lessons that I will carry on with me for the rest of my life and helped shape me into a better person. Montreat. What is it? It is a place where God's light and grace shines down, where everyone is there for each other, where lessons are learned, and where new friends are made. A place of beauty and hope and joy, and a place of tears and reconciliation. A place you can be yourself and be open; not afraid of any judgment. A place of unity that goes beyond what words can describe. Montreat. A life changing experience I will never forget.

– Victoria Johnston

Montreat to me was an experience I will always remember. I met a ton of new friends from all across the U.S., ones I will continue to keep in touch with. The great thing is, we all had one thing in common: we came together to worship God. I feel like at Montreat, there was a very thin line between us and God. The atmosphere was incredible, because everyone was understanding and cared for each other. It was also very humbling to hear many people's stories of struggles they've had to deal with in their lives. This has led me to feel a lot more appreciative of what I have in my life. Montreat will be something I will never forget and I hope we will be able to go next year!

Preschool News

As the preschool prepares for the month of February, thoughts turn to Valentine’s Day. Traditional Valentine bags and boxes will be decorated and Valentines exchanged. The children look forward to parties and special heart-shaped snacks!

With February comes the much awaited Groundhog sighting. The children will read stories about the Groundhog and watch to see if the famous Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow. They will also learn how people use the Groundhog to predict upcoming weather.

February is Dental Health month and all preschool children will learn the importance of brushing and flossing their teeth and how a healthy diet keeps their teeth bright. The children will also practice “brushing away their stains” on hard boiled eggs.

A reminder to anyone interested in registering their child for the 2016-2017 school year to contact the preschool office

January 24 turned out to be a beautiful day for the annual Walk for Water. We enjoyed time together walking from MPC to Moorings Beach Park. As we walked, we gained more awareness and understanding of the water crisis in Guatemala and other parts of the world. Our leisurely stroll pales in comparison to the 5 miles that many women and children make twice a day to collect water for their homes. But, this short walk gave a chance for us to consider how hard they work for something we access so easily. It also provided a chance for us to discuss the many ways that we can help support their efforts. Thank you to everyone who donated to help raise money for water filters being given to Guatemalan families in need.

Let’s Share God’s Love with Others Join us in the Moss Hall North Sunday School Pick-Up Area immediately following church on February 14th to decorate Valentine’s Day cookies. During Sunday school, students will be learning about God’s love and how to share it. We invite you to come decorate cookies to enjoy at home or share with someone who may need a little extra love this Valentine’s Day. For those of you with lunch plans, this will be quick fun and should last about 30 minutes. Please email Jen Clark at [email protected] if you’d like to participate.

All are welcome!

Who in Naples is not familiar with the name Myra Janco Daniels? Founder of the Naples Philharmonic, now Artis Naples, Myra is our Keynote Speaker for the February Gathering. Sharing with us The Spiritual Art of Never Being Retired, her reflections and inspirations will surely prove entertaining and worthwhile.

We are also happy to welcome Pastor Miguel Estrada of Mision Peniel. In 2013 Mision Peniel became a ministry of Peace River Presbytery. “Mision Peniel brings together people of faith and compassion to act with farm workers to achieve fundamental change in their living and working conditions.”

The circles of Presbyterian Women sponsor the Gatherings but ALL are welcome. This is a wonderful time for fellowship and, I might add, a very nice lunch catered by our ever-wonderful Evie Viggiani. It’s a full program so for all considered we want to begin promptly at 11:30 AM. Please register by calling 261-1487 or sign up at the Reception Desk outside of Moss Hall.

I am also pleased to report that our new Associate Pastor, Jaci Smith Patman, enthusiastically agreed to assume guidance and instruction for the leader training for the Horizons Bible study! Everyone is welcome – those circle members not using Horizons, circle members not leading the discussion or women not involved in circles or men or friends or…you get my point. Ya’ll come – it’s about growing your faith and there are no restrictions on that. Mark your calendars for the second Thursday of the month at 1:00 PM: February 11, March 10 and April 14.
