September 11, 2012 --Marine Corps Pvt. Cody D. Barss, sonof Maggie and Dwight Barss of Corinth, N. Y., earned the title ofUnited States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Ma-rine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C. For 13 weeks, Barss stayed committed during some of theworld's most demanding entry-level military training in order tobe transformed from civilian to Marine instilled with pride, disci-pline and the core values of honor, courage and commitment.Training subjects included close-order drill, marksmanship withan M-16A4 rifle, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, militaryhistory, customs and courtesies. One week prior to graduation, Barss endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits' minds and bodies. Upon completion,recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and calledMarines for the first time. Barss is a 2011 graduate of Corinth Central School of Corinth,N. Y.

Thursday September 20, 2012 at 7:00 PM at the Saratoga Public Library, Saratoga SpringsLong-time ADK member Judy Halstead will give a photo presentation and talk on the three-week-plus trip she and her husband, Jonathan Feinberg, took recently to New Zealand. Their many dayhikes included the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (Tongariro National Park) where they encounteredepic views of volcanic mountians Mt Tongariro and Mt Nguruhoe, which, together, played Mt Doomin Return of the King: Lord of the Rings. Unique sights on this world-renowned trek include RedCrater and various lava formations. On other hikes, known as tramps in New Zealand, they trav-elled through rainforests to glaciers, waterfalls or lakes. Judy and Jonathans paddling trips included the spectacular secluded beaches and islands of AbelTasmanNational Park and views of vineyards and mountains from Lake Wanaka, New Zealand'sfourth largest lake. The largest and most isolated of the 14 national parks in New Zealand,Fiord-land National Park, a World Heritage Site, has truly stunning scenery. Unique fauna, such as thethreatened Fiordland crested penguin, inhabit the fiords, rocky coasts and towering cliffs of FiordlandNational Park. Jonathans favorite part of the trip was paddling amongst the waterfalls, islands andclouds of mist in Doubtful Sound. Judy will also share photos of New Zealands tallest mountain,Aoraki Mount Cook (on a rare clear day!) and report on the status of Christchurch a year after theFebruary 2011 6.3 earthquake.
