Literacy Family Engagement I will be sharing a reading comprehension strategy we have been practicing all year called the 5 Finger Retell. I will also be sharing our classroom Literacy Family Project. Students took turns taking home our class "pet" Knuffle Bunny along with the book. Students read the book with their families and then had to take Knuffle Bunny on an "adventure" and write and draw about it and present it the next day to the class. We made all of the adventures into a class book.

Spelling Instruction in Grades 3-5 Trying to find spelling instruction that would benefit and challenge all students in a classroom was very difficult. Using Words Their Way spelling instruction seemed like a great fit but for a first time user can be very overwhelming. Reach For The Stars In the 2018-2019 school year, I will apply word analysis and vocabulary skills during whole group mini lessons. Students will work independently in 20 minute stations. The stations include differentiated work in each station with scaffolded Learning Targets in each station. Stations will include: Writing, Guided Reading, Technology, Read to Respond, and Word Work. This will help to increase scores on the Fountas and Pinnell Reading assessments.

From Fiction to Fact: Using Nonfiction Text in the Classroom Using nonfiction books, technology resources, and writing opportunities, we have implemented factual information into our 1st and 3rd grade classrooms to reinforce reading and writing across the curriculum. Whole group, small group, and individual tasks have been used to enhance students' knowledge of fiction vs. factual information. The students were given a particular topic, then became experts on it and in the end, are able show their knowledge of what they have learned. We have encouraged family involvement in our classrooms this year by incorporating a "Parent Show and Tell," as well as a Traveling Class Pet with a journal included. Both of these activities encourage a school/family partnership to enhance student learning and involvement in the classroom.

The Reciprocal Process of Writing and Reading Reading and writing are nearly a reciprocal process. As you improve one, the other nearly always follows. During this school year, writing in classroom journals has allowed students to express their learning and understand on a variety of genres and topics. They also have communicated their weekly learning with parents in their at home journals. Students reflect on the learning targets and skills they acquired in the past week and parents respond over the weekend. Finally, students explored fiction and non-fiction text in almost a 50/50 split during read alouds, small group level readers, and independent reading. Students were able to teach others their learning and share new facts and ideas.
