ENERGY EFFICIENCYWith everyone’s attention focussed
on global warming and carbon foot
prints, Cormac’s drive towards constant
improvement and development has resulted
in a new generation of energy-effi cient
vertical tanks for use with most bitumen
based products. Our Cortherm™ system
uses a combination of traditional insulation
materials, combined with a special refl ective
thermal coating, which together produce
spectacular energy savings compared
SAFETYWorking in conjunction with the UK’s
leading level measuring specialists we
have developed our RBA compliant safety
system to prevent overfi lling and spillages.
The safety control equipment incorporates
a special bitumen TDR guided radar
continuous tank level measuring system
and an independent high level alarm
probe. Measuring levels in bitumen tanks is
particularly diffi cult: the hot vapour rapidly
coats everything in the tank with bitumen,
rendering some level systems inaccurate or
ineffective, sometimes in a matter of days.
By contrast the Cormac TDR system has
an impressive track record in bitumen level
measuring and continues to give reliable
results even when the stainless steel
conductor cable becomes coated.
The system uses data from the TDR sensor
to provide an early warning high level
alarm (HLA) set at 90% of the available
tank contents, whilst an independent
ultimate high level alarm is set 2.5% higher,
providing a ‘belt and braces’ warning
should anything fail or affect the reading
from the TDR.
with conventionally clad tank designs.
Independent tests carried out on one of our
100 m3 tanks have shown that users can
benefi t from an annual energy saving of over
40000 kWh! To reduce energy consumption
even further, our tanks are fi tted with
proprietary progressive multistage heating
systems, which maintain the temperature
of bitumen within 1.5˚C of your required set
point. This winning combination offers the
unbeatable performance demanded by our
clients and we are confi dent that the new
tanks will pay for themselves twice over
during their lifetime.
The control panel clearly displays the
current bitumen level in the tank, the total
available space left in the tank (ullage) and
the current bitumen temperature, taking into
account the RBA recommendations that
there must always be 10% of the available
tank level kept empty.
A simple unambiguous traffi c light system,
which uses multi LED technology for bulb
redundancy and increased brightness,
clearly shows the tanker drivers the status
of each tank. A green light means the
complete tanker can be safely discharged,
whilst amber or red lights indicate either
the HLA or ultimate high level alarm has
been initiated. If for any untoward reasons
the early high level alarm is reached during
the fi lling process, an amber beacon at the
control panel and the amber traffi c light
fl ash together with an audible warning,
giving suffi cient time to shut down the
fi ll and safely blow the tanker lines clear.
However even if this fails, the independent
high level probe alarm will still provide
ample warning to prevent overfi lling.

MOBILE TANKSCormac’s range of trailer mounted mobile
tanks has been developed to meet the
demand of the asphalt manufacturing
industry where short term contracts in
different locations are necessary. The
tanks are designed for moving in the
empty condition and have a jacking leg
system to support the fully loaded tank
on site. Capacity ranges from a 20 m3 litre
unit capable of taking a full tanker load of
BITUMEN TANKS
material to larger capacity units to meet
the production requirements of our clients.
We build the complete units based around
proprietary tried and tested axle units.
Heating of the tanks can be carried out by
direct oil fi ring or electrically, either from
an external power source or self-contained
generator mounted on the trailer. Operation
of the heating, pump discharge system
and RBA compliant level control cum alarm
system is all carried out by the onboard
control panel, conveniently situated at the
rear of the trailer. The bitumen pump is
incorporated in the trailer with the discharge
pipe work providing either an automated or
manual plant feed.
SUPPLY AND DEMANDManufacturing sites rely on raw material
availability and optimising stock holding
versus cost is essential for uninterrupted
profi table productivity. To further enhance
our tank installations we are now offering
remote inventory management (RIM)
and vendor managed inventory (VMI)
capabilities. RIM and VMI systems provide
security and fl exibility for the management
of raw materials and fi nished product.
SIZE MATTERSTraditionally bitumen tanks have been
designed to hold a single tanker’s worth of
product. However this puts strains on both
the asphalt plant operator and the supplier,
whilst making it diffi cult to comply with
recommended safety guidelines.
Smaller tanks can no longer accommodate
full loads from the larger tankers and in
order to improve bitumen logistics, Cormac
have pioneered the development of tanks
up to 340 m3 capacity. These can be heated
via a variety of sources including electricity,
thermal oil, steam and renewable energy.
The ability to store larger quantities of
bitumen allows plants to even out their
delivery requirements, removing the need
for the traditional early morning delivery
scramble.

Cormac manufacturer a wide range of
mixed material storage equipment to fi t any
make of asphalt plant. Our scope of supply
includes single 50 tonne hot storage bins
and multiple bins with capacities of 120 or
210 tonnes. Bespoke sizes can be supplied
on request. The bins are fi tted with load cell
weighing systems which allow the operator
to weigh out accurately into vehicles whilst
continuing to mix.
We also manufacture a range of mixed
material storage bins for use with high
level plants. These high level units provide
increased storage capabilities and a
horizontal skip car travelling below the
mixer eliminates traditional problems
associated with winch ropes.
Cormac manufacture a full range of rotary
aggregate dryers for most makes of asphalt
plants. Our high-effi ciency internal lifter
design, together with the high density
insulation fi tted to the outside of the
dryer, signifi cantly reduces burner energy
consumption.
Our range of cold feed bins, which are
available in mobile or fi xed confi gurations,
fi t most asphalt plants and range in size
from 6 to 30 tonnes.
The bins come with optional collecting
conveyor and dryer feed conveyor with
variable speed control. They are also
available with coloured profi le sheeting
canopies to protect the aggregates from
inclement weather.
