I Thought I Was Going to Die!

by Pastor Roger

It started over a year ago. Whenever I would try to walk in the heat of the day, I would get a sharp pain in my shoulders, upper arms and up into my jaw. I told my doctor about it. She ordered a cardiac stress test. But it never happened. Slipped through the cracks of the VA Hospital administration, perhaps. A year later I told her again. “It’s worse now”, I told her, “Most of the time after I eat I get this awful pain in my shoulders, upper arms and up into my jaw”. She ordered a cardiac stress test. This time it worked! But the test revealed “some abnormalities in the heart under stress”.

“You need to undergo heart catheterization,” they said. “We’ll get a camera up in there, get some pictures of the inside of your heart — then we’ll know for sure what’s going on!”

And that’s what they did.

They found that three of the arteries serving the heart were “significantly blocked”.

Maybe it was the drugs they gave me; maybe I was only half listening. During the procedure the doctor spoke in a soft voice. I assumed he was talking to the doctor he was training. I thought I heard something like, “Heart disease. Three of the arteries to the heart are affected”. Then, quick as a wink, the procedure was over and the doctor left to talk to my wife and daughter. I saw him talking to them

in the waiting room as they wheeled me back to my room. They looked concerned.

Later, my wife said to me, “They couldn’t put stents in. You have to see a cardiac surgeon.”

I was scared. Heart surgery!

Then the nurse said, “But you may not be a candidate for surgery. Your blood doesn’t clot the way it should. And if they can’t do something about that, there’s no way you could have heart surgery”.

I said, “So, what happens then?”

She said, “Well, that’s all there is. There isn’t anything else that can be done.”

And that’s when I became pretty sure that I was going to die.

On the way home I asked my wife, “So, what did the doctor say to you?”

She said, “He said not to let you do anything”.

I thought to myself, “My gosh! –it’s worse than I thought! The heart doctor is afraid that if I do anything – anything the least bit strenuous — I’m going to have a heart attack! I’m going to die!”

And then I began to wonder what death would be like! I had a million questions.

What would it be like to be dead?

Would I go to be with Jesus right away? Or, were the people who teach “soul sleep” right? Would my soul just lie in peaceful slumber until Jesus comes again?

Would I see my mother? Would I be part of a family in heaven? Is there some kind of orientation class? Would I be like a baby born into this world? — helpless and totally dependent on others to take care of me? What if I got into a not-so-good family? What if I never saw my sweet wife again? Not that she’s not going to heaven, but what if in heaven we’re just assigned to different groups or families that live in different places

and do different things, and she gets assigned to a different group?

Fear of the unknown can be a cruel tyrant.

In time, this verse came into my head: “To be absent from the body is to be with Christ!” “Yes!”, I said to myself, “In my panic I had clean forgotten that verse!”

Then these verses came to mind: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

And slowly, I began to calm down. In time I realized that things couldn’t be as bad as I thought they were or they would never have let me leave the hospital!

I only tell you all of this in an attempt to say to you that it’s easy to “believe” when death seems faraway. Because at that time, we’re not really concerned with all of the “nuts and bolts” – all of the tiny details concerning how this is going to happen or what that will be like. But when it comes a bit closer (even if it’s only in your over-active imagination!), it is natural for

people – even for devout Christians – to wonder what it will really be like when . . .

And now, for what it’s worth, I will tell you what I learned thus far through all of this. Faith.

Faith in God – faith in Jesus-- means that I don’t have to know how everything is going to work out. Jesus knows.

And He says that it’s all good! And, I trust Him!

Now, I know that a good number of you are way ahead of me when it comes to figuring this stuff out. But I thought it might be good for those who haven’t yet had to struggle with “end of life issues” to be reminded that it’s all about faith — trusting Jesus to take care of us! We may not know what lies ahead for us, but Jesus does! And He says, “It’s all good!”

And we trust Him!

Our remaining needs for last month’s items include: 1 large bag of non-melting candy, 3 picture books (for children ages 2-4), 5 standard pillowcases, and 3 king size pillowcases (secondhand pillowcases in good condition are acceptable!). If you can help us cross these items off our list it would be much appreciated. We’re starting a new month and a new list of goals.
