Who is a Young Carer?

• Young carers provide care and support to family members, other relatives, friends and neighbours

• The people they care for may be affected by disability, physical or mental health issues (often long-term), frailty, substance misuse or another condition.

• In 2013, there were an estimated 759,000 unpaid Carers in Scotland aged 16+ (17% of the population)

Issues Facing Young Carers

Who are we?

• Cornerstone is a provider of care and support services throughout Scotland

• In Your Corner is a new service running in the North-East of Edinburgh to provide support to young carers aged between 16-25.

• We will support young carers to achieve their potential by providing flexible practical and emotional support, which includes advice, information and guidance

• We will signpost people to appropriate services and offer to facilitate referrals

Meet the Team!

Jennifer Corkindale

Jennifer has recently taken up the post of Project Worker within Cornerstone. She has had four years working with charities aimed to help people to achieve the most out of their life.

Julian Thomson

Julian has held various roles within Cornerstone, but has recently taken the Project worker role for In Your Corner. He enjoys supporting people to enjoy a valued life. He likes to eat Mexican food, read and listen to music.

Tracey Howell

Tracey has held many roles within Cornerstone over the years. She is currently operations Manager for Lothian’s and Borders. She enjoys getting to see the people we support.

Nikki O’Brien

Nikki is currently a service manager for Cornerstone

What Will We Do?

• We will deliver a flexible, person-centred service which will include; 1-1 support, group support, drop in sessions and other non-face-face supports.

• Establish connections with local Voluntary and Statutory organisations

• Provide formal and informal support in the form of; giving advice, guidance and signposting to other organisations when relevant.

• Develop a referral pathway for Young Adult Carers, which promotes smooth transition to adult services.

• Develop a social community for Young Adult Carers which will aim to be peer-led.

• We will raise awareness of the issues affecting Young Adult Carers and the service we will provide by working in partnership with local schools and attending career fairs.

Working with ‘In Your Corner’-What Can You Do?

• Contribute to strong, effective working relationships which will benefit the needs of Young Adult Carers.

• Help to develop the added value of services and enable cross-referrals.

• Help us to develop a strong working knowledge of mainstream and specialist community organisations and resources which are available to Young Adult Carers.
