CORNISH SINGING SCHOOLS CELEBRATE THE POWER OF SINGING FOR
ONE AND ALL!
Cornish Singing Schools
is both a network of
singing schools and a
f r a m e w o r k f o r
developing a successful
school singing strategy.
We envisage schools
wanting to sign up to
become a Cornish
Singing School will
either already be a sing-
ing school or schools
wishing to develop their
vocal activity.

Singing Leadership
Singing is a vital part of education - it helps
children to learn and enhances well-being.
The Government’s National Plan for Music
Education states that ‘Children from all back-
grounds and every part of England should have the
opportunity to learn to sing’, and recommends
‘clear progression routes available and affordable;
and a singing strategy to ensure every child sings
regularly.’
So we’d like to help and reward schools who
embrace singing through the Cornwall Music
Education Hub’s new programme, Cornish Singing Schools, for schools who commit to ensuring that
singing is a continuous key part of school life.
The 4 Golden Lodes
Implementing the 6 Activity Strands demonstrates that the school is committed to a broad range of continuous singing activity.
But in order to ensure that the activities will have the best outcomes for all children, there are 4 Golden Lodes which should underpin everything you do:-
1. Quality – ensuring that singing is of a good standard and that you are always looking for ways to improve it
2. Progression - what’s next? What can this activity lead to which will enable children to grow in confidence and skill both as singers and learners
3. Inclusion – activities are inclusive of all children, recognising ethnicity, gender, special education needs and vulnerability
4. Vocal health – you will be committed to ensuring that children are singing healthily. This means choosing appropriate songs, providing activities which warm up (and cool down) children’s voices, and ensuring good posture and breathing.
The 6 Activity Strands
We know what great singing sounds like in
school, and through our 6 Activity Strands,
we can help you to ensure your school is
singing regularly and singing well, as well
as giving you access to great singing
activities.
How much does it cost,
and what do I get?
There is no cost! All support and
advice is fully funded by the Cornwall
Music Education Hub as part of our
commitment to vocal development and
is FREE for schools!
As part of the package, your school will
receive advice and support from vocal
experts, access to exciting opportuni-
ties offered by Cornwall Music
Education Hub such as large scale
performances, as well as being able to
share your practice and experiences at
the CMEH VOICES network meetings.
You will be invited to take part in
‘SongFest’ at which you will be
presented with your Cornish Singing
School certificate.
Your school will also receive one year’s
membership of Sing Up, giving you
access to a vast Song Bank and other
supporting resources.

The Cornish Singing Schools Framework
Complete and submit this framework to Angela Renshaw ([email protected])to demonstrate how you plan to develop singing in your school over the coming year, or contact Angela for advice, school workshops and assistance to help your school to achieve Cornish Singing Schools status.
The 6 Activity Strands
These are the activity strands which we believe are essential for every Singing School. Decide and describe how you plan to implement each strand:-
1. Choirs & group singing
Regular meetings of a singing group of some kind, which works towards performance.
2. Curriculum & classroom
Singing supports curriculum learning and is commonplace across classrooms
3. Whole school & staff
Staff across the school have made some sort of commitment to support singing on a regular basis, and the governors, head teacher and senior leadership team all activity support singing in the school.
4. Variety
A wide range of singing styles are explored (e.g. gospel, sea shanties, world music), as are imaginative approaches to performance, and use of children’s creativity.
5. Outward engagement
The school connects and engages with other singing opportunities, through Cornwall Music Education Hub and other providers such as Sing Up, and through singing ac-tivities in the community.
6. Singing leadership
At least 2 members of staff are confident to lead singing throughout the school and support colleagues. CPD opportunities are undertaken to build skills in singing lead-ership.
