Overview and HistoryAs portrayed in our mission statement the principalbusiness of Andor is the development andmanufacture of high performance digital cameras.Further we look to share our expertise to develop thebest solutions for your light measuring problems. Ourproducts are distributed to a customer baseencompassing both the scientific research andindustrial communities.

The largest Andor facility is based in Belfast, NorthernIreland which is a new, purpose-built 50,000sq. ftpremises. The premises include state of the art optical, electronic and mechanicalworkshops, a 3,000sq. ft class 10,000 clean room, vacuum and electronicprocessing facilities.

We employ over 180 staff and distribute our products to customers in over 40countries, either using our own worldwide sales force, or through a network ofindependent distributors. Our portfolio of over 400 products and accessoriescontinues to increase understanding in fields as diverse as drug discovery, toxicology analysis, medical diagnosis, food quality testing and defense.

The founders of Andor were working in the Physics department of Queen'sUniversity, Belfast, but found the cameras then available were inadequate for theirdemanding applications, so they developed their own. After using them in variousimaging and spectroscopic applications they found they were being requested byresearchers in other universities. Andor was formed in 1989 to take advantage ofthese requirements.

The company has grown organically and is today the fastest growing companymanufacturing high performance digital cameras. Along the way we havepioneered the development of high performance cameras.

Pioneering EMCCD TechnologyEMCCD technology, sometimes known as ‘on-chip multiplication’, is an innovationfirst introduced to the digital scientific imaging community by Andor Technology in2001, with the launch of our dedicated, high-end iXon platform of ultra-sensitivecameras. Essentially, the EMCCD is an image sensor that is capable of detectingsingle photon events without an image intensifier, achievable by way of a unique electron multiplyingstructure built into the chip.

Andor has more EMCCD cameras in the field than anyother provider and in 2005 introduced the world’s firstEMCCD spectroscopy camera, the Andor Newton. Applications for EMCCDs include live cell imaging, lowlight surveillance, weak Raman signals andnanotechnology research. Just recently Andor haslaunched the Luca family of price performance EMCCDcameras, offering speed and sensitivity at extremelyaffordable prices.
